Because boys are never sent home or punished because of dress code violations?
[–]enjoycarrots 27 points28 points29 points 11 years ago* (17 children) | Copy Link
Not nearly as often as girls, because girls are far more likely to intentionally ignore the dress code. Most normal boy outfits are within most school dress codes, unless the kid has their ass hanging out. A huge number of outfits and fashions available for girls are in violation of most school dress codes. Girls want to be fashionable, and fashionable for them is a violation. The most common dress code violation for boys is hats. But they don't get sent home for wearing a stupid hat with the sticker still on it. They just get the hat taken away (temporarily). Or they get told to pull up their pants (which they can do without being forced to change).
Is this discrimination against girls? Not where I'm standing.
[–]Hamakua 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link
My sister cringes when she sees photos of herself from when she was in High School (adult now). She can't believe how slutty she looked nearly 24/7 (and she never got sent home for dresscode). You can tell on some girls when they are between the ages of ~15 (sometimes younger) and second year of college (whatever that might be). During that period they don't know yet about the world and go through this hyper-sexuality litmus test to figure out where the boundaries are.
It's beyond just being fashionable, it's "how much attention from boys can we get, even though we might not yet know what to do with it." The result tends to be this sexually charged arms race in what you can wear (or get away with not wearing) and what kind of makeup you put on.
[Edit]
And then you have this righteous indignation being doled out by the "outside of high school" crowd who think none of us remember just what it was like. It's like they think bringing a second "more sexier" set of clothes hidden in your book bag that you change into later at school is some hidden piece of knowledge. Please.

My office is in a busy retail precinct flanked by two large senior secondary schools. At the current rate of increasing exposure I have no doubt that there will be visible genitalia parading past my office all day long in the not too distant future.

Exactly, let's remember what high school was really like. Personally, I think most modern teenage girls can hit up the internet and actually get an idea of what to wear from 1000's of fashion blogs, which should help the age-old issue more than any policy or lesson plan. It should be obvious that you don't have to free-labe yoga pants or wear a boob tube, or generally just expose yourself to look attractive. And yeah, young men should absolutely be taught not to sexually objectify women... But let's at least recognize high school is a confusing environment for everyone involved, even the adults forced to send said boob-tube girl home in her gym clothes.

young men should absolutely be taught not to sexually objectify women
"sexual objectification" is a powerful meme that's part of the whole memeplex that is male sexual shaming. The fact of the matter is that men and boys are sexual creatures, just like every other animal.
What young men should be taught, and the way we should frame it, is to take control over their own sexuality and ensure that it serves their happiness. A big part of this is training oneself to be "immune" (to a reasonable degree) to the exposure of flesh that's designed to activate his arousal and modify his behavior.
The big difference between these two ways of framing it is this:
"Don't objectify women" -> pay more attention to what women want "Don't let sex control you" -> pay less attention to women's bodies
Key difference, and it comes out of framing. By framing the problem as "objectifying women", the solution is to serve women more. By framing the problem as "objectifying yourself", the solution is to develop multiple sources of self-worth in addition to sexual success.

With this age group, if you have a dress code and don't enforce it you are asking for a mess.
The feministas act like this is a hammer that gets brought down randomly. There is nothing random going on.
[–]enjoycarrots 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree. A lot of male teachers are really reluctant to enforce the dress code on girls. I understand why, but they need to suck it up and do it anyway. Being consistent is important, even if you risk having the girls call you a pervert for paying attention to their clothes.
[–]chocoboat 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Exactly. Girls are the ones who most often choose to ignore the rules and wear revealing clothing, because they want to show off their body and be seen as attractive to the opposite sex.
Sometimes you'll hear the excuse of "it's hot outside, they're just wearing what's comfortable". Well, you don't see boys needing to wear tank tops and short-shorts just to avoid overheating. There's nothing uncomfortable about a regular short sleeved shirt and normal length shorts.
Of course, no one is saying that a girl who dresses in a revealing way deserves to have anything bad happen to her. But schools have dress codes for a reason, and they aren't that hard to follow. And unless someone is prepared to argue that students should be allowed to wear nothing but string bikinis or speedos to school and that near-nudity is not a distraction at all for teenage boys and girls, then they're agreeing with having a dress code.
[–]obvious_russian 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think for the purposes of determining what to teach boys (i.e. don't get distracted, don't do anything bad to girls) where the actual line is drawn is irrelevant. Should girls be allowed to wear string bikinis? Should they have to wear a burka? The line is somewhere between there, but for the purposes of what the boy should do, we can assume that the girls are in string bikinis.
[–]What_is_trolling -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I don't think it's discriminatory at all. Guys usually get in trouble for things like socks with weed leaves on them or wearing their pants absurdly and disgustingly low. Girls tend to get it for wearing things that are too revealing.
Also, maybe it's good to teach young women they don't need to dress like that? I have worked in after school programs and stuff, and sometimes I've been really shocked by how much people just leave completely visible. I think adult women are mature enough to decide what works for them and what job that will or will not get them, but kids? They're simply unaware and immature. It has nothing to do with "don't distract the boys," it's about self-respect: fucking cover your body.
Then again, I would never say anything to a girl. I just think that I would feel or come off creepy. I'll tell the boys to pull their pants up, and I'll let the women I worked with in those programs tell the girls to cover themselves.

[–]altmehere 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree. I think it's important to note where the difference does lie, namely in that there seems to be a greater variety of styles available for girls (and women) and that there simply isn't a male equivalent for the banned things (at least that society deems acceptable).
The only reason these policies don't seem to effect boys to the same extent is that the option isn't there. But they've never let reality get in the way of victim narratives, have they?

... But a lot more useful to learn to function in the environment you're going to be living in for the rest of your life, where women in revealing outfits are everywhere in both real life and media and decent men manage to look without leering, harassing or losing their train of thought.
I could give a fuck about dress codes. But the justification some schools use for enforcing them is blatantly sexist - against boys.
[–]ben0wn4g3 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
So what is dressing sexy? And what is the point? Are we to deny the concept of dressing sexy? Is it a pseudo-word that has no basis in reality? Have high-street multi billion dollar industries got it wrong? Maybe.. Just maybe dressing sexy is a 'thing'.. Maybe then it wouldn't be a bad idea to think about the purpose of dressing sexy and then decide if it is appropriate to certain environments such as a classroom or an office. Maybe!?
[–]intensely_human 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Even in a room full of naked women who are all begging him to fuck them, a self-respecting young man should be able to focus on the calculus on the board.
Of course it's unrealistic to expect this level of self-control, but it would be best to teach young men to be immune to sexual distraction rather than trying to rid their environment of it. Burkas are an interesting solution to the "problem", but not really compatible with freedom.
Yes, there is such a thing as "dressing sexy", but women should be completely allowed to do that, even in professional settings.
Of course men should also be allowed to check women out IMO. Eyeballs aren't hurting anyone. I understand one could argue that a constant stare is a threatening gesture for humans instinctively, and so causes discomfort and distraction. But a bikini at work also causes discomfort and distraction.
The thing is, I think men should learn to deal with the discomfort and distraction of women dressing sexy, and I think women should learn to deal with the discomfort of being checked out. Neither one of these behaviors causes any real damage to either party.
[–]ben0wn4g3 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
How on earth is it appropriate to dress sexy in a professional setting?
I do not think you understand the very meaning of professional.
Professional standards. Dressing sexy is a completel contradiction to those standards. Being professional is about focusing on the job at hand, and not how good your ass looks in your yoga pants or if your tits are showing enough cleavage. Any women who does this in the business world wouldn't be taken seriously. Not because she is reduced to a sexual object by men. But because she is literally showing that is how she wants to be seen. She is saying 'I'm more interested in looking good than anything else'. Go look sexy at the night club when being sexy makes sense. Not at work when getting laid isn't the task at hand.
[–]intensely_human 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
If being professional is about "focusing on the job at hand" then why are neckties considered "professional"? Jewelry, shoe shines, shaving. How do these relate to the job at hand?
Is a man who wears a necktie saying "I'm more interested in looking good than anything else"? How about a guy who irons his shirts?
The trouble with wanting to ban sexy outfits is that you need to define "sexy outfits". A woman who looks good at work isn't saying "I only care about looking good". She's saying "I care about looking good."
[–]ben0wn4g3 -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Because neat and tidy looks professional. Sexy doesn't and nor does scruffy.
You are absolutely deluding yourself. Even an autistic kid could could pick out the differences between an outfit that is purposely sexy and one that isn't.
It's mind bogglingly simple but I'll try and spell it out to you; if you find yourself dressing closer to a QUOTE "Sexy Secretary" Ann Summers outfit then you're doing it wrong.
[–]intensely_human 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
So now we're bringing neat and tidy into it. Once again nothing to do with getting the job at hand done, unless you think that alphabetizing a file is the same kind of "neat and tidy" as a necktie.
Also wouldn't some spandex be just about the most "neat and tidy" outfit a person could wear?
The reality, that even this autistic kid realizes, is that "professional" is a big arbitrary set of cultural bullshit as one can clearly see by looking at judges in the UK and their ridiculous wigs, or belt buckles in Texas, or the neckties I've been mentioning this whole time. It has next to nothing to do with getting the job done.
As for "sexy", should sexy behaviors be banned as well? Should people not be allowed to smile, to demonstrate intelligence, to bend over to pick something up, to use upper body strength?
I'll grant you there is sexy and there is un-sexy. Just like there is rap and there is bluegrass. But trying to codify the concepts into workplace rules is going to be either actually based on getting things done ("don't wear neckties - they jam the printers") or it will be arbitrary ("don't wear skirts above the knee").
[–]ben0wn4g3 -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Yes our culture has decided it is neat and tidy.. but you can't just call culture 'bullshit'... you are denying reality. Communism looks good on paper friend. Culture is what makes us human. Culture is what binds us together.

A human being is not a TV.
Seriously, what is it about a girl's outfit that is so distracting, boys cannot take their eyes off of her? What if it doesn't show any sex characteristics, just shoulders? Do these outfits also distract gay boys, and asexual boys? What about girls of all sexual orientations? What about nonbinary people? What about boys wearing tightly-fitting clothing, or tank tops (or "manks"); why is that different?
Are boys really hard-wired differently? Where is the evidence that suggests that? Again, it seems really demeaning to boys to suggest that it's so much effort to "control themselves," they have to format an entire set of rules just to make people less distracting. I understand that more testosterone means a greater sex drive, but with that argument, wouldn't boys get distracted no matter what? What about pre-hormone transgender boys?
[–]sciencegod 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Are boys really hard-wired differently?
Yes, that's kind of the point. What evidence do you have that men and women are "hard-wired" the same?
Men and women are morphologically different. They have different sexual strategies. They have different lived experiences. Why would you assume that the "hard-wiring" would be the same for men and women?

I have a better idea. Why mollycoddle people at all? Let the stupid girls come in naked if they want to. They can get caught up in attention games with the stupid boys and get left behind while the intelligent boys and girls can focus on their schoolwork. In college, I've seen a number of girls dressed in what would violate high school dress codes and I honestly don't care. I focus on my work, and let the buffoons focus on sex 24/7. Survival of the fittest applies to grades for sure.
[–]modern_rabbit 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Let's be honest, we're going to look at them regardless of how naked they are. She's just making the assumption that the reason girls can't walk around half-naked is because it distracts boys, but she has neither tried to verify that nor would she be able to verify it. She just made it up, or followed everyone else who made it up.

I think that woman got tyrannosaurus rekt. What's really sad is that I think any (sane, caring) woman who spent more than five minutes in a man's brain, understanding the gaze and the drive, they'd apologize and try to find ways to look good without being next to naked. I know girls have feelings, too, but I get the sense that it's just not the same, because so few of them seem to really 'get it.'
[–]Tessellated_Turtle 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Did you really just say that?
Isn't one of the main gripes of MRAs that men are perceived as hormone-crazed slaves to their sex drives? Your comment basically just said that you think of men that way yourself.
[–]scsimodem -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think you're taking the extreme version of what I said. It's like if a woman said, "I think if men could experience PMS just once, they'd apologize for not being more understanding," and a feminist said, "So, you're saying women are uncontrollable rage machines when they're on their periods?"
No, of course I'm not saying men are 'hormone-crazed slaves to their sex drives.' There is, however, a biological, hormonal struggle that men have. We have instincts where physical appearance and sexuality are concerned. It doesn't mean we're 'crazed' or that we can't overcome these instincts. It means that we have hormonal urges that are not helped by sexually suggestive clothing.
To say otherwise is to deny one of the struggles of being a man.
[–]i_am_just_having_fun 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's still sexist. Saying men are horndogs is a sexist stereotype. I see women in sexy clothes all the time, and it doesn't have any negative impact on me. Your comments are misandry, and so is OP's post.

I vaguely recall a couple of (unrelated) articles where a woman received testosterone shots and was very surprised how difficult it was to go about her normal day activities without looking and thinking about sex.
I think one was a professor, and the other one was transitioning from female to male.
[–]FallingSnowAngel 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Women are more sensitive to testosterone than men. It's also responsible for their own libido. It's no wonder the professor suddenly struggled with a dramatic increase.
No idea how it affects trans men, since their brains are masculinized, but it'll at least give him the same boost as any other man would receive.

I can't find the source, but a FTM transman once attested to how physically-based his desire became as he pursued his transition.

Let's take it a step further: those shorts aren't too short; in fact, they're too long! It should be absolutely okay -- hell, even encouraged -- for high school girls to dress like strippers.
If we accept that stripper-like attire is absolutely inappropriate, then it logically follows that there is a balance to be struck between freedom and lewdness. Dress codes are a normal part of high school, and of life. Standard feminism: making an issue out of a non-issue.

Try walking into a job interview with your bra stap showing or a mini skirt. It isnt professional, it's more suited to a night club. The school is meant to be a professional and dignified environment.
The fact I have to explain this shows how childish and stupid feminists have become. Because this is mostly grown women complaining, school girls dont feel oppressed bar a few 16yo tumblr misfits.
When you cant wear a pokadot onsie it isnt because it distracts boys, it is because it is against dress code. The same goes for altering garment or haveing underwear showing.

Lipstick. Why do girls wear lipstick?
2 main reasons; The first one is to make their lips resemble a swollen, blood engorged (to suggest sexual arousal) VAGINA.
The second is because a woman's lips actually darken and swell a little when sexually aroused so this "signals" to the male of the species that she is open to offers, so to speak.
I'm not going to get into cleavage, blush, or high heels, but I promise it's got little to do with "dressing for me" as is often reported.
[–]hairyandscary 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I wear lipstick in two different scenarios. One is because it makes me feel pretty...including bright pink lipstick, black lipstick, and other decidedly non-yonic and/or lighter-than-average colors. (Honestly, I would freak the heck out if I saw a cherry red vagina, wouldn't you?) Many women don't wear lipstick at all, especially in a nonprofessional environment. Many asexual women, as well as women in committed relationships, wear lipstick.
The other is in a professional environment. Fitting certain beauty standards is important. Just as men are often expected to keep their faces neat and wear freshly pressed suits and nice shoes, so women are often expected to wear makeup that makes them look nice and wear freshly pressed suits and nice shoes, including, often, high heels.
I can promise you right now, there isn't some conspiracy to make our faces look like vaginas, anymore than men shaving is some conspiracy to make their noses look more like penises. Also, where did you learn that fact about a woman's lips darkening and swelling when aroused? I can't find that anywhere?
As far as cleavage: Yes. It is indeed dressing for me. I stare in the mirror. I take selfies. I know I look rockin' in a low-cut dress. And some women do dress to impress others. Note how I say "others," not "men;" remember how not all women are attracted to men, or even to anyone at all?
(P.S. Nonbinary people wear all the things you've described as well.)
TLDR: Women wear lipstick to look attractive or professional, not to make our faces look like vaginas so we can lure in the male gaze, or something.
[–]rapiertwit 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You wear lipstick to look attractive. OK, what makes discolored lips attractive? To whom, and why?
Once upon a time, women put belladonna (Italian: "beautiful lady") extract in their eyes to dilate their pupils. They didn't think "I'm going to dilate my pupils because people's pupils dilate when they're sexually aroused, and I want everybody to think I'm drenching my petticoats at the sight of them." They just wanted to look attractive, and somebody somewhere noticed that men found women with large pupils attractive. The men didn't think "that lady is hot because her pupil dilation indicates sexual arousal." They just liked the way they looked. Men are instinctually programmed to respond to physical cues of receptivity.

If I had a say in this I'd immediately make sure there were donkeys at every school. One should nearly always be in view and close by. Massive penises every which way you turned. A natural learning environment.

I disagree. The problem is not whether boys are looking girls or girls are dressing like sex objects; it's the dress code. Don't like it? Don't go to that school. Simply as that.
The dress code implies that girls can't use skirts shorter than X inches. Period. The same applies for boys, we can't go dressed however we want.

You should try being a guy with long hair. Or god forbid, a guy who wants to wear a kilt. The idea that girls have stricter dress codes is just ridiculous.
If a guy is wearing hot pants or a short skirt. He is probably also going to be sent home for being distracting also.
