I got snipped in July 2022. The actual procedure and recovery weren't that bad. Trying to get a doctor to do it was a 2 year process of constant rejection.

I am 40, have 1 kid, and absolutely do not want any more. I had two doctors refuse just because they thought I'd change my mind. Planned parenthood does not offer these services for men I'm my area. The local med school required my spouse be present for the initial consultation, and provide her written concent on the procedure. ( which she would have happily provided, were I not so completely put off by the requirement. When questioned about it, they did not require the same from me if she wanted her tube tied. I don't think either of us should need the others permission. )

Finally I got a doctor to agree to do the procedure, and it wasn't because I didn't want children - it was because a pregnancy for my 40 year old wife may be a significant health risk to her.

Ultimately my choice of what do do to my body was only honored when framed in the context of doing it to protect a woman. Go figure.

I don't see the problem. This is an attutude that is common on r/childfree regardless of gender. The same applies for women seeking sterilization.

If anything, this is an attempt at gatekeeping. The issue addressed in the comment about side effects is a valid point and should be discussed. Should the post have included women too, probably not. They were talking about their own past relationships and same sex couples can't get pregnant from one another, so the point still stands.

There is also evidence that vasectomies lead to autoimmune disease. You don’t stop producing sperm, you continue, and since there is no where for the sperm to go your body starts to attack it in order to get rid of it which can in turn lead to autoimmune disease.

Permanantly steralizing yourself bcos you dont want kids now, is not a decision people should be expected or encouraged to take. A) it has mixed effectiveness, B) it can be damaging, C) a lot of the time it is completely irreversible. Not even mentioning compatability with religious belief such as it being prohibited for Muslim men. Do i think its fair that birth control methods are catered to women? No. Do i think surgical sterilization should be avoided for men in favour of investing in less invasive male medication equivalents like the pill? Yes. Also the condom is 98% effective so its not like methods don't exist... that 2% is personal responsibility for engaging in sex by both parties.

Fuck all those people. Where I live, unless you have a medical condition that necessitates it, you need to have THREE children and be over FORTY years old to get a vasectomy. It's illegal otherwise. I feel so privileged!

Note: same applies for women to tie their tubes, which is also fucked up, but at least women have a lot more birth control options than what men have, i.e. a single condom. And it's fucking insane that so many believe everybody else lives in the same imaginary bubble as they are while probably they never even looked into how it works anywhere since we are not alone in requiring stupid shit like this for sterilization.

The odds of PVPS are less than 5%. Considerably less. If you can afford a vasectomy, don’t ever want kids, and plan on being sexually active you should absolutely get a vasectomy unless urologists are telling you there’s some other serious medical condition specific to you that should make you reconsider. I’ve had a vasectomy. I’ve known dozens of other guys that have too. This is the first I’ve ever heard of PVPS because it’s so rare.

Not saying you're wrong for your answer, in fact I support it.

However for other commenters, please know that women face many of the same problems you do when trying to get sterilized, especially if they're young, unmarried and/or childless. This is just for context as they may have similar frustrations. It doesn't mean anyone has the right to tell you to get snipped.

Also, I'd encourage you all not to call women names. It is immature and does nothing to help our cause.

I did not go through a lot of pain. My disclaimer is that I was unemployed and prepared not to do strenuous activity for 2 weeks. Because of great preparation, I healed fine.

I had a traditional vasectomy and it was open-ended. With day 60 I was sterile.

Getting a vasectomy is way easier than getting your wisdom teeth removed. I've had both. Don't let the fear rule you.

I know birth control options exist, but besides condoms & pulling out there's not much for men.
