I don't think you understand what "child support" has become.

Child Support enforcement is now federally funded. The more the state collects the more the state gets from the feds.
Child Support is not based on reality. Child support is based on your potential. Problem is most men are divorced by their wives after they have had a significant loss of income. Which means your unemployment check isn't your potential. Your 100k a year job is and that is what your child support is based on and you pay or you go to jail. If you get sent to jail, the feds pay the child support collection agency even more money...

The entire concept of child support should be scrapped.

The current purpose of child support is not to support children, but to act as a form of stealth alimony. The current system not only takes away a separated fathers only bargaining chip (financial support), but simultaneously cripples his ability to fight for fair contact and custody by seizing a massive chunk of his income. (Its common for a mans assets and savings to be frozen during a separation, and for those of you who've never hired a lawyer, they are absurdly expensive e.g. $300-$750 per hour.

Given that we live in an age where women have jobs, and can earn equal pay, a more equitable solution would be for separated couples to be forced to negotiate and contact and financial support agreement.

If one party wants primary care, but states that they can't support the child without financial assistance, then primary care should be offered to the other party. This would force both parties to negotiate.

We need to push for a paper abortion for men who do not want children. She could then opt for an abortion or keep the child.

It's her choice and, now, it's her responsibility.

If he wants to be in the childs life he pays half the cost of raising a child, if he wants to pay more he can.

This would help insure that mom is nice to him. One of the biggest problems we have is that the entire female sex has decided to denigrate fathers en masse. Additional child support over the basics should be contingent on his assessment of her attitude toward him.

Also a limit to stop ex-spouses from claiming vast amounts of wealth from their former spouse when they've contributed little to accomplish it.

I'm late in the game, but let me put in my two cents.

I'm a single father of 3 kids who managed to win custody of my kids. I paid for mom's education and now she makes more than I do. She was a stay at home mom prior to the divorce and now I am stuck at my low paying job being the primary caregiver to 3 kids.

She was ordered to pay a measly $250 per month in child support. I am behind on my mortgage and my car payment because I can't work a full 40 hour week and still take care of the kids, and child care is more per hour for 3 kids than I make.

Mom has paid nothing and owes me about $10k in back child support. If she would have been paying I would be current on my bills and could afford to get the kids more than one birthday and christmas present.

Child support should not be abolished. If the custodial parent does not make as much as the non-custodial parent, the non-custodial should contribute monetarily towards the care of the children.

I'm absolutely not saying the system that is in place now is the right one, but from my point of view abolishing child support altogether would be a net negative.

We need to get rid of debtors prison for not paying child support. And any child support payments should be done in the form of a credit card that the father can log on to the internet and see what his wife is doing with his money.

i think it'd be nice if they had more power to enforce it, my dad left myself my sister and mum destitute when i was 6, my mum kept the house but it was hers before they were married. we lived on income support whilst my dad took his new wife on round the world trips, remodeled her house and bought her jewelry and cars. he only started paying when i turned 15 but the money never went to us it was taken by the government as back payments for the income support we received, mean while my mum had taken a minimum wage job in a factory that makes frozen food. he'd remortgaged the house before he left so my mum was saddled with £50,000 mortgage. luckily she received enough inheritance to pay that off from my great aunt who passed away, by that point my mum was glad she was divorced as she thought my dad would have squandered the money. im 23 now but haven't spoken to or seen my dad in 8 years, when he started having to pay child support he no longer bothered to keep in contact despite only living 15 minutes drive away.

maybe separate "other expenses". If a child was going to private school, make the primary earner pay the school, not the other parent, etc.. But, some states have guidelines for child support based on joint parental income, so one party doesn't' just get totally screwed.

Interesting little fact. I knew a guy that got a girl pregnant. When the baby was born, he did not sign the birth certificate and his name was not put on it. Months later, the girl gets him for child support BUT he gets no set visitation unless she decides because he's not legally the father and the baby hasn't be legitimized. He had to go to court in order to get the baby legitimized, but he was paying child support BEFORE that. It disgusted me.

I think the idea is to keep the child in the same style of life they lived at prior to the divorce.

So if the parents are wealthy due to the father, but the mother gets custody, then the father pays enough money to the mother so that the child lives in the same type of lifestyle as during the marriage.

As a 20 year old whose parents have split, child support is rather comical.

My father is decently wealthy, he only pays 750$ a month, always has. However, I'm 20 years old, I'm not a child, I don't even live with either of my parents- but it still comes.

The kicker is it is still given to my mother, but I guess she's paying ridiculous taxes that supposedly outweigh that $750 a month. I've asked her Why, supposedly the way it works is they're on some really old form of child support set-up and he actually gets a tax deductible for paying child support, while she pays more taxes.

At this point we both want rid of it but that's going to require actually going to court, which my father is notorious for not doing, and has no reason to do so.

TL;DR child support wound up screwing my mother over. The irony. Does child support not have some kind of age cap?
