Here is what this means for men :

  • Women will work less but be paid the same as men

  • When women will take leaves, their work will be dumped upon men BUT companies will be forced to enforce equal pay and equal opportunities for promotions and raises.

The argument will be :

Men : Men work more than woman so they should get more opportunities.

Feminists : But it is not women's fault if they have menstruation

The same arguments against privileges in exchange of conscription

Men : Men have more duties so they should be given advantages

Feminists : But it is not women's fault if they are physically weaker.

They refuse to see their privileges (getting paid while not working/not being forced to fight and being protected) and refuse to see the pressure on men (men will work more without reward/men are forced to fight and die). As they said, for the privileged, equality feels like oppression.

[–]poptartwith 66 points67 points68 points 3 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Actually, even the TikTok Feminists (the worst of the worst) are against them from what I see. They're claiming this is setback women because it gives less incentive for workplaces to hire them. Cuz a Man will give you more value for the same salary.

[–]SamaelET 40 points41 points42 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is part of the strategy. They will asks for quotas or other policies to forcefully equalize things and push female supremacy. Spain already has a lot of quotas or "gender equality conditions" to get government contracts and fundings.

[–]poptartwith 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wouldn't be surprised. Let's see what happens :/

[–]paliostheos 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ah, but you misunderstand. This law will support men as well. Transmen. I mean real men. Just men. Men.

[–]Contranovae 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I see what you did there.

[–]paliostheos 103 points104 points105 points 3 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

I'm so confused. They worked so hard to enter the workforce. Why are they now trying to not be there?

[–]denisc9918 114 points115 points116 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To get paid to not be there.

[+]Rhymes-with -64 points-63 points-62 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You know that painkillers exist?

[–]MultipleHeadshot 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

From the girls I’ve known the pain comes and goes and only hurts for a day, either way period pains aren’t normal and can be treated.

[–]its_ahsoka661 point 2 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Why is this so downvoted?

[–]Hitmanthe2nd1 point 2 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Because it's condescending , and is arguing against facts on the basis of 'Oh , i'm a woman , i know the pain' on a subreddit that doesnt tolerate anecdotal bullshit , get it ?

They want to not go to work when they are sick. Doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.

[–]EugenGoldstein 48 points49 points50 points 3 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Men also get sick

[+]Libberater -37 points-36 points-35 points 3 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

And men should get sick days too. Fighting against worker rights is dumb.

[–]EugenGoldstein 49 points50 points51 points 3 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Yes they should. Everyone should get sick days. Women shouldn’t get extra free sick days for just being women. That’s what this is about

[+]Libberater -53 points-52 points-51 points 3 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

If women get more sick than men because they get periods, why shouldn’t they get more sick days? I think people that are sick more should get more sick days.

[–]pm_me_your_buttbulge 35 points36 points37 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The problem you very quickly walk into is: Who deserves the promotion? The person is there regularly and rarely is sick or the person who is sick literally every month on top of other sicknesses?

Surely you realize you're going to create a bitter group of people, yes? Someone else is doing significantly less work than you also thinks they deserve equal pay and is equally deserving of promotions as you?

I think people that are sick more should get more sick days.

Because the direct translation is: Less work for equal pay is upsetting to some people.

It, practically, translates into punishing healthy people.

Not that I have an answer but surely you can see how this is can create a divide, yes?

To help you understand this better - some companies allow you to take a smoke break if you smoke. If you don't then you are not entitled to those breaks.

Many people pick up smoking so they can get breaks because otherwise they are, practically, punished for not smoking.

You don't get to say "well they both deserve breaks" because that's not how that works. Shit in one hand, want in the other, and see which fills up faster. This is simply the reality.

[–]BassSpleen 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you want to leave your company because women with really bad period symptoms don’t have to come in, go for it. I’m fine with women not coming in if they got it bad.

[–]UnadjustedEyes 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You were just.. waiting for them to say their next thing so you could say what you were planning on saying, huh? Didn't address any of their good points (because, if you even read it, they were universally understandable and you couldn't) and returned their diplomatic tone with one of condescension and virtue signaling.

If you truly believe in what you're saying, take the time to participate in all aspects of the conversation- not just speaking, but listening and addressing as well. If all you care about is making sure everyone knows you disagree and believe yourself to be in the morally superior position, you're doing great. But if you actually want to contribute to the dialogue about an issue that you've already gone to the trouble of asserting your position/it's superiority on, I'd recommend utilizing the energy you put into exuding a smug disdain into constructive feedback.

Think of it this way: No matter how right you are, if you're a dick about it, no one will want to give you the satisfaction of acknowledging it. In fact, the only thing you accomplish by doing so is not only deepening the other persons roots on their own position by adding the extra motivation of proving you wrong, but also making anyone else listening to you two more receptive to your opposition's points for the same reason. you're representing the stance of the issue you're arguing for or against, and it's something you actually care about, surely you'd want to take steps into not creating blind adversaries of your views just because the people they associate with your side to be insufferable (and therefore the side that must be in the wrong in their minds eye).. right?

[–]PoohPoohPeePee 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Men die earlier therefore they should be allowed to retire earlier.

[+]Libberater -19 points-18 points-17 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But isn’t it suicide, drugs, and obesity that skews mens average life span? If not, I think you could make a good argument for lowering the retirement age of men.

[–]Zestyclose_Skin7982 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

men are putting themselves at risk in the most dangerous jobs so you can underestimate their work from the comfort of your smartphone in a very very priviledge situation so be a little thankful men are the victims of the vast majority of accidents at work, not saying deadly accidents and you are a coward saying it is because of drugs and obesity it is way beyond than a f joke jeez even frivolizing men suicide what a specimen weve got here

[–]Relevant-Ground101 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Why is everyone disliking this comment? He is helping the conversation. I guess all you npcs out there just click downvote cause others did. We need to prove to others we aren't just a hive mind of people following others, we are men, the head of the body not the neck.

Edit: and yes I know someone expanded on his response, but he still helped (in a way) that guy share his knowledge, it's not like he was openly disagreeing with the other guys statement.

[–]lordluke10 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Because that's an extremely slippery slope. Are men gonna get gas and food tax deduction because they are larger and need to consume more food to stay healthy and get less milage because of their added weight on cars. Do men need specific back and neck pain days for dealing with pain due to them being much taller on average?

[+]Libberater -7 points-6 points-5 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

So force women to go to work when they have debilitating period pain because it’s a slippery slope? Kind of just seems like men or women with debilitating pain should stay home and if this happens to women in their period, stay home.

[–]lordluke10 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Nice manipulation there. I never said women should be forced to work when sick. Women already have sick days.. Why do women need ear marked sickdays for a specific thing that only some experience. Again, men have health issues that affect them in a way that virtually doesn't affect women. What does special sick days solve? It sounds like it creates more problems for women.. your cycle becomes public knowledge and women will be less attractive to employers if they need to give them x amount of days of every month because a few women experience debilitating pain.. can men get earmarked back pain days every month too then?

[+]Libberater -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Then fight for men to get more sick days. Not women to get less.

[–]lordluke105 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

wat. Women had plenty sick days before, and you're not even acknowlging the downsides of having these special sickdays. What the fuck are you talking about? Your current stance is both anti-men and anti-women amazingly

[–]Zestyclose_Skin79825 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]pearl_harbour1941 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Periods aren't a sickness. You don't "catch" periods, you don't "cure" periods, and you can't pass them on. They are not an illness.

Why do women need special leave for a normal bodily function?

[+]Libberater -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s fir people that have debilitating pain. Is that normal for a period? Or do you think those with debilitating pain should be forced to go to work since you don’t feel it’s a problem?

[–]Chompys_backup 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We already have sick days for those who experience bodily pain. If its debilitating pain, then those women need to see a doctor to get an official diagnosis.

[–]63daddy 99 points100 points101 points 3 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Sick leave already exists. This added time off for women means less work for equal pay. So much for feminists wanting gender equality.

Why should this one issue receive additional leave but not other issues? Why not migraine headache leave?

[–]denisc9918 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why not migraine headache leave?

It will, it happens to a lot of women in the week opposite the menstrual week or at least it will...

The whole "I can't do the job but I should be paid anyway" is idiotic.

[–]RemCogito 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

this one issue receive additional leave but not other issues? Why not migraine headache leave?

This would be a godsend. Being able to have separate leave for my migraine headaches would mean that I have enough sick days that I wouldn't have to work when I'm sick. I work on a computer all day, it is much easier to me to struggle through a fever and a cough, and still do my work, than a migraine.

[–]equalRights111 36 points37 points38 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Exactly! If you are too sick to work, then sick leave it is. Actually, what does this law actually do? Do they get extra time off on top of the normal sick leave? Or is this just part of the usual sick leave but dressed up as something else?

[–]Schadrach 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Actually, what does this law actually do? Do they get extra time off on top of the normal sick leave? Or is this just part of the usual sick leave but dressed up as something else?

That's the million dollar question - is this women getting extra PTO for being women, or is this just employers being required to accept menstruation as a reason to use sick leave? There's a big difference between those two things.

[–]equalRights111 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Indeed. It also raises many other questions.

[–]killjoy_enigma 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The problem with this ideology is that it can be used to eat itself. Guess what I'm a woman now because I said so and my imaginary period hurts so I need to go home

[–]GaySexXTREME 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

well i guess mtf on hrt can actually get pms and the like, so

[–]SecTeff 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This makes sense - if a women needs to have a few days extra sick leave and it’s a result of their biology then no HR manager is going to fire them for that. So why do they need extra leave? If you are too sick to work have a sick day.

Likewise if a man has an issue with their biology and it results in then being sick men can also take sick days.

[–]Rhymes-with -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It’s just recognizing that in some cases menstrual pain can be so severe that women might need to take a day off. If you haven’t had severe pain from periods that you had to have prescription strength painkillers to handle, I’d say you wouldn’t understand… But by all means work through your next kidney stone…

[–]63daddy 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That’s why there’s sick days….

[–]Rhymes-with -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That’s true, but the issue is women might not feel entitled to use a “sick day” for pain without having a separate designated allowance.

[–]Miserable_Ad5227 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like she needs a therapist then. And not special unlimited sick days on top of normal sick days.

[–]oh_to_be_you1 points 3 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

So companies should offer a week of sick leave monthly?

[–]paliostheos 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quick, prove you haven't gone through menopause.

[–]LoopyPro 56 points57 points58 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

No worries, they also approved a law that lets you decide your own gender. So as a guy, once a month you can declare yourself a menstruating woman and take a week off while still getting paid.

I didn't come up with the rules, I'm just trying to get my fair share.

[–]denisc9918 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Better Bachelor just released a video suggesting exactly that. Use their idiotic laws to the fullest extent possible creating more problems which they'll address with more idiotic laws... Sooner or later it'll all fall down.

[–]LoopyPro 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Joker's right on that. As long as you didn't vote for it, it's perfectly ethical to use these silly laws to your advantage.

And thus, spitting in the face of feminists past who fought against the idea that menstruation effected a woman's ability to work.

The next wave of feminists will claim that this is infantilisation of women pushed by The Patriarchy™.

[–]denisc9918 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is exactly why they have the "waves".

[–]phoenician_anarchist 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it's more like generations.

Each wave grows up being told by the previous wave how terrible the world is for women, and when they grow up they become the next wave fighting for "women's rights" and telling the wave after them how terrible the world is for women. That's why it peaks every 20 years or so.

[–]equalRights111 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

How are they useless?

[–]critical_Bat 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Are your asking me why I think the yes means yes law is useless?

[–]equalRights111 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I am indeed

[–]critical_Bat 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Because to name just one example all it does is transform a question of if a no was said to was a yes clearly said without coercion or manipulation.

[–]equalRights111 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think it’s more concerning than that. It seems to suggest that you would have to prove that a yes was verbally said, otherwise it could count as rape (even if actually fully consensual).

[–]critical_Bat 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I do not recall hearing of a case where the accused had to offer such proof. By nature this type of law is against the idea of being innocent until proven guilty.

As I said before I remember reading comments regarding such a law and how to verify how much free will was behind the consent.

Just to clarify I meant useless in the sense that they will not accomplish what their proponents think/hope/claim they will. They will just change the discussion slightly.

[–]ANIKET_UPADHYAY 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

What is that ?

[–]critical_Bat 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Before the law was no means no which meant that if the accused wasnt told no then that meant consent wasnt contested. The new law is that every step has to be approved with a yes.

It didnt take the genius behind that idea long to figure out that was no improvement at all and that is ignoring the typical he said she said issue.

Madrid has approved legislation expanding abortion and transgender rights for teenagers, while making Spain the first country in Europe that will entitle workers to paid menstrual leave.

The changes ushered in on Thursday to sexual and reproductive rights mean that 16- and 17-year-olds in Spain can now undergo an abortion without parental consent.

The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights.

[–]Otaconbr 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Won't this harm women in the long run? If I'm an employer I'll certainly weight much more strongly towards hiring men going forward.

[–]hawkeyepitts 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There’s no way this applies to women who are factory workers, cashiers, food industry jobs, etc. It’s 100% going to be privileged women who are already overpaid to do a cushy office job (and already have the option to work from home + sick leave) who will benefit from this.

It’s fucking dumb too that they wrapped this up in a reproductive rights bill. Looks like this piece of legislation had a lot of protections for abortion as well as access to birth control. I’m sure some people here will disagree with me on those two topics, but there’s too many people on the planet and low-income people should have equal medical access to abortion and contraceptives.

Women 40+ years ago were complaining that menstruation didn’t “hold them back” from entering the workforce. Now they say it’s does, and they should be paid to stay home 1/4 weeks a month while being paid the same as men? Insanity.

[–]ajomojo 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Francisco de Orellana walked from Peru to the Atlantic Ocean across the Amazon jungle. Cabeza de Vaca walked from “La Florida” to the “Nueva España.” Their descendants can’t work because of menstrual blood and headaches. Masculinity in crisis, politicians who happen to have deficient testicles voted for this.

[–]FappingFop 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why not just give two days off every month to everyone and not make it such a contentiously charged issue? The average worker is overworked as it is.

[–]loktaiextatus 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah yes... back slowly to the ancient "unclean week" where women dont leave the house and are excused from their duties.

Wasnt this "weakness" women were liberated from by pads and tampons etc the reason they were (partly) not preferred for certain professions? Isnt accepting 1/4th of an adult woman of child bearing age's life as an ailment an acceptance of the idea that they arent suitable for the job? My friend has crohns disease and while they are mostly understanding, if he took multiple days off every month for it, as he had to at times it was really bad because he literally couldnt function (or if he HAD gone in, he would just be in their bathroom more than half the day, suffering) and they used it at a way to can him, he went in for unemployment and his employer laid out the facts of what his job entailed and what was REQUIRED for the position in order for the company to function- and that my friend had agreed to do that- and then condition or not he couldn't do it, and so he was denied unemployment- Then while he was looking he attempted to get SSI payments because he was partly disabled from work (Confirmed he could not fulfill the jobs requirements) and they considered him able bodied enough to work- and he was again told to pound sand.

I cant wait to let him know if he moves to spain , as long as he is bleeding on the toilet like he does, he should be GOOD TO GO!

Why does there need to be a specific distinction for menstruation?

If you need time off work because you're not feeling well, what difference does it make what the cause is?

Whether you've got a bug that's going round, suffering from a migraine or having menstrual pains... the result is the same: you're ill and need time off.

I don't get it.

[–]marks1995 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because you don't get to be ill 36 days per year (just assuming 3 days per month) on top of any actual sickness or injury. And that is paid time off according to this law.

Many places of work require a doctor's note if you miss a certain number of days. If you're claiming to be that ill, you need to go see someone. But now women can take over a month off per year (again, paid time off). This is fine as long as the law allows the business to give preference to men since they are going to be working more days fo the same amount of money.

[–]ZYGLAKk 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How is this bad?

[–]GaySexXTREME 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We have employee A & B. The minimum, lets say, UPH is 7. In a normal case, if A is doing 7 UPH, and B is doing 7. But B is going to have 3 days a months off.

Average working day is 8 hour x 7 days x 5 weeks x 12 months. So thats 23520 per year. Now B is taking 3 days off, thats 2016 units lost.

thats 8.57% less work

So women are paid the same for 2016 units less then men with the full amount

Back in the day, my wife (at the time) had a BFF who was a harpy of a woman, and lived with us for six months after her latest BF kicked her to the curb. So this friend got a job as an admin for a construction company. From the very first week, she would only go in two or three days, calling off sick for much of the week. She was never sick, just preferred to sunbath next to my pool, or go shopping instead of working.

She got away with this for eight months before they finally fired her.

Partly because its nice that women in workplace get to have a break when they suffer from menstrual cramps. They must be extremely painful and I get it that it affects your ability to work. I don't wanna deny women that kind of privilege.

But at the same time, it feels unfair for men who gets paid at the same amount as the women who had done more work than the women.

You mean potential sick pay? That isn’t a gender issue since women actually get the flu to surprisingly…

When it’s a law it ain’t going to be that rare, it’s free time off for something that happens often unlike the flu.

The minute EVERY SINGLE woman takes off 1 whole week every 4 you will see things change back, I doubt it will be that bad... Are you saying if you got something like that for a male only problem you'd take advantage of it and lie? That means you're a shit person, not everyone

[–]I_iNero_I 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Chompys_backup 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Its hilarious how you shit on men for getting sick, even though testosterone genuinely exacerbates symtoms of your sickness.

But please tell me more about how women need paid time off because of their innate physical qualities.

[–]HendoRules -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I didn't shit on men, I said it's considered a similar thing (with way less pain and blood loss and actual genuine harm than a cold ffs), yet we get off with a cold whenever we want don't we? Hypocrite

[–]HendoRules -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

If you seriously don't want this entire bill because some girls will chance their luck in PE at school (when the actual reason is for difficulty working) then you're the dilusional one. Who cares if some girls want to skip PE 1 week a month that's not a huge deal and will probably be called out if they're clearly lying by doing it every 2 weeks or something... Jesus Christ get a grip

[–]Chompys_backup 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Who cares if some girls want to skip PE 1 week a month

Because in Adultland this translates to "shit I have to cover for Melodis shift today because she conviently got period problems during Black Friday and this is retail."

[–]HendoRules -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

So you seriously think this means ALL women will now only work 3/4 weeks a month from now on... You're insane

TIL that advocating for equality is insane. 🥴

[–]HendoRules1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

TIL that people think having a right to take a day off when they're in excruciating pain is an insane concept because it only effects women... Whenever you take a day off with a cold you're likely doing the male equivalent of this...

Tell me you've never been with a woman, without telling me much? 😂😂😂

[–]Chompys_backup 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Whenever you take a day off with a cold you're likely doing the male equivalent of this...

Testosterone genuinely exacerbates cold symtoms. "Man colds" exist because men actually do have worse symtoms than women. And yet you mock us for literally the opposite sex equivalent of what you say women need extra paid time off for.

Thanks for showing your true colours you chauvanist hypocrite.

Tell me you've never been with a woman, without telling me much? 😂😂😂

Well the real jokes on you cause im gay. 🤣🤣🤣

[–]HendoRules 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

[–]Chompys_backup1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Periods are not worse than colds shut your dumb whore mouth. 🤣🤣🤣

[–]RemCogito 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

No it isn't, But for many women it will be every month. Both my mother and my wife have extremely painful periods.

My mother doesn't have them anymore obviously but she had a double hysterectomy in her early 40s to put an end to the pain so that she could actually work enough to progress in her career.

My wife has around 4 days every 28 days (her average period lasts 6 days) where even just cooking dinner is extremely difficult for her. 4 days every month where she can't really even do the things that she enjoys either. She has lost jobs before because she needed so much time off so consistently.

When she lived completely on her own, taking so much unpaid leave meant that she could barely afford to eat, which meant that she didn't have regular periods, which helped save her from missing rent or starving completely.

[–]HendoRules -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yeah exactly. So doesn't that mean these few days a month shouldn't sacrifice the woman's job????? Or do you think they should all have hysterectomys like your mom? Or are you agreeing with me that this is needed? Just clarifying

[–]RemCogito 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

My point is that for many women it will be damn near a week per month. And those who take it consistently will still be avoided for promotion. Just because the time is paid doesn't mean that it ingratiates you towards your employer. If it isn't used commonly, there will still be a huge social stigma to using it. And if it is used consistently it will effect the hiring of all women. And given that this time off is only available to women, and is basically sexual harassment to even question, means that at least some people will use it to take time off for non menstrual reasons. Which is great for them, but terrible for their coworkers.

Given that men statistically work longer hours already, and already get demonized for getting paid more for the extra time, this is going to widen the gulf between average male and female earnings. If a woman can take 20% of the month off, without recourse, employers are going to avoid promoting them, or even hiring them if they can.

A much saner version of this law would simply increase mandatory required sick leave for all employees in the country to be able to fit this new use case, and make menstruation, as well as other chronic conditions (migraine headaches, fibro myalgia, spinal injury, etc) fit within the scope of the law.

They chose to make a sexist law that will increase sexist attitudes towards hiring and promoting female employees specifically.

Instead of working towards creating a law where women and men can be treated equally, they created a law that paints an unnecessary target on the back of hard working women who don't need the time off, and excludes men who might have a just as justifiable reason to miss work, on account of their gender. It literally screws over both men and women for different but gendered reasons in one bill.

[–]HendoRules 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So what do you suggest???

[–]RemCogito 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I made a suggestion in the comment you responded to but didn't read. I'll quote it below.

A much saner version of this law would simply increase mandatory required sick leave for all employees in the country to be able to fit this new use case, and make menstruation, as well as other chronic conditions (migraine headaches, fibro myalgia, spinal injury, etc) fit within the scope of the law.

If both men and women can take the time off for chronic recurring issues equally, you avoid stigmatizing women for their biology, and help thousands of sick men at the same time.

[–]HendoRules 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But that... Already exists... People just don't want that list to include menstruation because it includes so many people (50% of the population) and it would occur for 1 week every 4. People think its unfair because it isn't rare and it doesn't help that there is already a war between the sexs essentially

So your solution wasn't really one was it

[–]RemCogito 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Migraine headaches are generally expected to be covered under your normal sick leave. Same with Fibro Myalgia. Basically almost all chronic conditions are covered under your normal sick leave, and if you need more time than that, you're expected to go on disability.

When my father broke his back, He was covered to not work for as long as he wanted, at 80% of his normal income through workers compensation and disability. However, after healing from surgery, he wanted to work, and most days he was able to work with only mild pain. There were only 10-15 days per year where the pain was excruciating. His choice was to burn his 5 sick days, or work through the pain.

I get migraines. They used to be nearly weekly, but as I learned my triggers, I was able to reduce the frequency significantly by changing my lifestyle. I have usually end up being unable to avoid 6 or7 of them a year and I hope that they happen on my days off. Because otherwise I don't have enough sick days to cover them. It means that when I run a Fever, I still have to work, because its easier to work through a fever than through a migraine. (I'm just glad my boss is nice enough to let me work from home or burn my vacation time when I'm sick/contagious)

I used to work with a woman who had Fibro Myalgia, She was in significant pain for most of the time we worked together. Eventually she was fired for absenteeism because she needed needed 3 days off in a month when she was already out of sick time. It wasn't the first place she was fired from due to her illness, She eventually went on disability benefits, as she could not keep a job due to it.

This law isn't helping any of this. Though my old co-worker could have seen some benefit, because she could have lied, said that it was menstrual pain rather than the fibro myalgia that she actually was suffering from.

My solution would cover women experiencing particularly bad issues with their menstrual cycle, and a huge portion of people who are left with the choosing to not work at all even on the good days, or working through excruciating pain with no special relief.

How does a law like this do anything to lessen a "war of the sexes"? Men generally just want to have similar benefits to the ones that feminists are pushing forward for women only.

[–]HendoRules 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I genuinely cannot tell if you're arguing for or against this law in these comments... You mention how some people need this kind of law for chronic conditions then argue that that women you worked with couldn't for her fibro myalgia, but what, women who suffer extreme pain from periods shouldn't have this ability to take time off? Where exactly do you live? Here in the UK, we can take time off easily for big or small things. My gf from Portugal doesn't even think we need that law here because we can already take time off easily, but in Portugal, like Spain, she couldn't because they don't get much time off and it's unpaid unless you get a doctors note after several days

[–]dibberdott -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Spain needs babies, they have a low birth rate. Fertile women need a break. Day 14 after the first day of their period is Ovulation day. Whats wrong with you people , this is just good the country.
