They are, because testosterone is a thing. On the flip side women typically are higher in neuroticism which leads to the depression and anxiety. The sexes are different and hormones effect how each behaves and feels, that's science. We don't want to be a mirror of feminists who think women are perfect and do no wrong.

[–]AAKurtz 174 points175 points176 points 6 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

I think the issue is the idea that women are more likely to have depression and anxiety, which simply isn't true. The thing that is true however, is how that depression/anxiety manifests. So yes, we are different but the wording on this post reinforces a damaging stereotype.

[–]MajorWookie 94 points95 points96 points 6 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

It actually IS true.

I think this is the part where providing a source would be helpful. Same goes for AAKurtz

It's not depression directly, but if present, suicidality is usually an indication of depression. If you'll give me that, then studying prevalence of suicide attempts shows that women attempt more frequently than men. Men have statistically significantly more success per attempt, resulting in the skewed death by suicide statistics (leading cause of death among some male age cohorts). Seems to play into the link between depression, anger and violence (here, against self) in men, as opposed to the less violent, more anxious expression of depression in women.

(As prior commenter mentioned, testosterone does play a role in expressing aggression and violence, so it is biologically explainable without a social context. However, I think study is warranted to separate social and biological factors in violence expression in males. How much is culturally or socially expected (e.g. shows of dominance) vs. what is innate from hormone production?)

^ Basically all of this. Got a family member working in education for children with issues. General rule of thumb they are taught is that girls will be or claim to be suicidal much more than boys and many will have failed attempts they don't carry through on or "attempts" for attention. Boys on the other hand have to be watched much more carefully as even though there's fewer boys naturally suicidal due to u/decomposedgoat 's explanation and a few other things but those that are will show few visible signs of being suicidal, many won't seek attention at all and when the attempt comes to pass, boys take a "measure twice, cut once" approach and succeed with a high successful suicide rate with fewer attention "attempts".

Although girls are more typically likely to be depressed, anxious and suicidal/"suicidal", there's a huge lack of support and systems in place to identify and protect boys leading to the statistic we're all aware of. We need more campaigns and work into how we can protect the boys and men in our society from mental illness and suicide.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This. Boys are a bit unpredictable in that sense because they'll take an admittedly crazy decision like blowing up stuff or killing themselves. Girls will overall kick up a bigger fuss but might not do something too extreme. Unless it's psychological.

[–]uncleoce 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How do we measure the number of boys that aren't vocal or acting?

[–]Tinktur 18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

People who survive suicide attempts live to try again, inflating the numbers. The statistics also don't account for the fact that because women are much more likely to recieve help and sympathy in the event of a failed attempt, there will be an increased rate of "attempts".

Yes, I'm aware. That doesn't dispute what I said, though.

Edit: Most people are aware that slicing your wrists or overdosing on pharmaceuticals is a lot less likely to succeed, and whether the choice of method is concious or unconcious, the likelihood of success is a factor. Many common pharmaceuticals used are also ones with a low risk of successfully killing someone, especially in the doses available to most people. Paracetamol/acetaminophen is one of the most common drugs, and while it is very hepatoxic in high doses, it's very unlikely to kill somene before they're either discovered or they themselves seek medical care due to the increasingly agonizing symptoms.

[–]antilopes -4 points-3 points-2 points 6 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Of people who are recorded as surviving a first suicide attempt, the majority (60% or more from memory) do not die from suicide within the next X years. X might have been 10 or 20 years. Long enough to be out of the youthful danger zone anyway.

Before everyone just swallows the incel line about "attention" attempts I'll just say I see lots of kids (i.e. people under 25) of both sexes reporting attempts on our SuicideWatch sub. They mostly survive. They nearly all try to hide their attempt if possible, which it often is.

Purely manipulative "attempts" are not unknown but are quite rare from what I've seen.

Much more common are confused states where a half-hearted attempt is made that has a small chance of lethality. These seem to function somewhat similarly to self harm in relieving stress. The fact they might end up dead or permanently injured or be in agony for several days before possibly dying is accepted, and sometimes it happens. These attempts may or may not include a cry for attention. Often or usually they are secret.

Sometimes attempts have an element of trying to force parents to stop withholding professional mental health care from a child. This is particularly applicable to Christian fundamentalist, Charismatic and some other denominations, and cultures which just don't believe in mental illness. But mostly it is applicable to children of parents with narcissistic personality disorder or similar.

Dismissing the above as "just wanting attention" is shallow, harmful and sometimes lethal.

I don't see how that argues against my point. The more important question is how many make another attempt, and how large the share of repeated attempts is. Perhaps inverting the framing gets the point across better: someone who succesfully kills themself cannot make any more attempts.

Before everyone just swallows the incel line about "attention" attempts I'll just say I see lots of kids (i.e. people under 25) of both sexes reporting attempts on our SuicideWatch sub. They mostly survive. They nearly all try to hide their attempt if possible, which it often is.

I never claimed that they only do it for attention, or that the attempts are manipulative, and that's really not my point. My point is that factors such as likelihood of recieving help, understanding and/or sympathy influence the choice of method. Someone who is less likely to recieve support or sympathy if their attempt is discovered will also be more likely to choose a more lethal method, and vice versa.

Much more common are confused states where a half-hearted attempt is made that has a small chance of lethality. These seem to function somewhat similarly to self harm in relieving stress. The fact they might end up dead or permanently injured or be in agony for several days before possibly dying is accepted, and sometimes it happens. Yes, which is exactly my point; that these types of attempts make up a smaller share of male suicide attempts. There was no implication that only women make half-hearted attempts, only that they are more likely to do so, as evidenced by the fact that men much more often choose highly lethal methods.

We can speculate as to why this is, but my point is that the fact that men are less likely to recieve empathy and support than women, especially concercing mental issues, is very likely to be one reason for this disparity.

Dismissing the above as "just wanting attention" is shallow, harmful and sometimes lethal.

I wasn't trying to dismiss anything as "just wanting attention", you've either completely mistaken my point and intent, or you're intentionally misunderstanding me. The reason I replied to this comment chain in the first place is that women's higher number of attempts is always brought up in response whenever someone calls attention to men's high suicide rate. Whether intentionally or not, this is often done in a way that dismisses the idea that this frankly huge disparity might be caused by something more than innate preferences for method.

[–]antilopes 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you then.
There is a big range of suicidality in people who attempt. The Oxford University suicide research group got two local hospitals to administer Beck's suicidality scale to everybody who came in with potentially lethal suicidal attempts. (This classification of what constitutes a valid suicide attempt is in itself difficult for comparing men and women because the different methods are hard to compare and vary wildly in detection rate). Anyway the majority of people were low on the 30 point scale. They wanted urgent relief from dysphoria and were prepared to risk death as a side effect, you might say.

There was only a small cluster at the "strong wish to be dead" end of the scale, and they were heavily male.

US men displaced from guns by tightened gun access in the 90s nearly all switched to hanging or another highly lethal method. Few switched to low lethality methods.

Some suggest men's choice of method is a meaningless accident of fashion, like men wearing certain colours and clothing styles. I don't think that fits with the above evidence. I think men more often choose lethal methods partly because they are more frequently strongly committed to ending their life, as opposed to just ending their current torment.

> How much is culturally or socially expected

Don't forget my favorite: Bias in reporting due to the actual physical impact of male violence.

Cat fights have to get real nasty to see someone in hospital. A quick exchange of two or three blows between people of greater physical strength can see broken bones.

i.e. Woman throws a punch, hurts her hand. Man throws a punch, breaks someone's jaw. One is going to bed, the other is going to prison.

[–]None_of_your_Beezwax 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

women attempt more frequently than men. Men have statistically significantly more success per attempt

Survivorship bias. Having attempted suicide is one of the strongest indicators that one will do it again.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivorship_bias

For more self aware individuals this can also result in a high pass filter being applied (if you know that if you try you will succeed, you are less likely to try if you don't really want to succeed).

[–]decomposedGoat 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sorry, I should have written "more women attempt suicide than men attempt suicide". I was not meaning to indicate that multiple attempts per person were counted in the comparison.

[–]None_of_your_Beezwax 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The statistic is usually quoted in the form you first wrote it, but even so, the high pass filter still applies.

In England, women are more likely than men to have a common mental health problem and are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders.

https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/statistics/mental-health-statistics-men-and-women

The pdf to download on this page has a lot more stats which support the claim in OP's picture.

[–]SwiggityStag 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Does any of this take into account how reluctant men tend to be to report mental illness, and how reluctant mental health specialists tend to be when it comes to diagnosing and treating men? I feel like a lot of numbers are affected significantly by how society treats men.

[–]DogArgument -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A fair point, it's not possible to take gender-influenced reporting rates into full account in the statistics. The full report (pdf download) does discuss some of those issues with these statistics though. And I know that there's programs in place at least in the UK to significantly reduce any bias from doctors in diagnosing depression.

Either way though, OP was quoting from an article, where it isn't surprising that they would just report the statistic the way that they did.

[–]LastSamurai101 -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women are more prone to stress, anxiety and depression compared to men, this is because of the difference in hormones.

[+][deleted] -8 points-7 points-6 points 6 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

is the idea that women are more likely to have depression and anxiety, which simply isn't true.

Based on what grounds? Propaganda? Have you met women? Or are you an alien sent from another planet and our ways are foreign to you?

Men are more predisposed towards aggression, women are more predisposed towards neurological disorders. Such as depression, anxiety, spontaneous divorce, assault with a weapon, coercion, coercion with deadly intent, selfishness, appeal to authority fallacy, appeal to the group fallacy, find phalluses not appealing fallacy, make fake phalluses to please themselves fallacy, sit on their false phallus while contemplating phallus fallacy, phallus phallus phallus phallus I wish I wasn't such a bitter old cunt so I could have a phallus fallacy.

The list goes on, and they get no better than a C grade on any of them. Seriously, who can't at least get a B in "sitting on Phallus 101"? Even your grandmother could pass that class. Did. Did pass that class, as evidenced by your existence.

[–]Trinkentr -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What's wrong with fake phalluses. Lots of guys do that too

[–]babno -3 points-2 points-1 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

the idea that women are more likely to have depression and anxiety, which simply isn't true.

Yes it is true, you're wrong

[–]AAKurtz 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Women being 'more likely to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety' is not the same as 'being more likely'. When men are sick they are far less likely to go to a doctor and when men are depressed, they are even less likely to open up about it or get help.

[–]babno -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you're just going to assume that half of all depressed men are never diagnosed (or more if you don't assume all depressed women are diagnosed)? Do you also believe that rapes are actually 10x higher because "90% of rape victims never report it"?

Sorry, I'll stick to actual known numbers and not shit randomly pulled out of your ass.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

How come boys face more violence by girls in relationships? My guess is that young women are more aggressive than young men because of hormones and culture (which "empowers" women to show their aggressive behaviors particularly towards men). Furthermore, relationships between girls are notoriously passive-aggressive and, let's say, nasty.

Of course, this must be different in different cultures/countries/socio-economic demographics and so on.

[–]SurturOfMuspelheim 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I've always thought those studies/stats include women slapping or shoving men which, while still bad, isn't going to do nearly as much as if a man did it to a woman. So I think women are more likely to do it since both the consequences of the actions are lowered, but as is the severity of the action.

[–]LokisDawn 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The known and obvious consequences. This doesn't include what experiencing violence (esp. from a loved one) does to you mentally.

[–]babno 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That's one specific and narrow area of violence. Overall men are more violent, that's the facts. As to why it flips in relationships, I'd agree with you that it's likely because of cultural influences where woman on man violence in relationships is portrayed not as violence but as humor.

relationships between girls are notoriously passive-aggressive

That is BECAUSE women are less violent. When you have a disagreement or distaste for someone you'll have to solve that by some means. Because women don't want to choose violent/physical means they will instead choose social attacks via passive aggressive remarks.

[–]LokisDawn 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And social isolation, etc. The worst parts of bullying, essentially.

[–]babno 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Worst is subjective. For me the worst part of bullying was a cracked skull and concussion (which ironically was inflicted by a girl throwing rocks at me).

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This whole thing was about aggressive behaviors, not violence. Boys learn to cope with their aggressiveness because they are more aggressive (have more aggressive feelings) and because they are reminded of it over and over again. Women usually learn, too, but later on in their lives.

Anyway, this is a big question. The analysis should start by classifying different aggressive behaviors (healthy-no healthy, direct-indirect and so so on) and then deciding what we are talking about to begin with. But the idea that young men have more (unhealthy) aggressive behaviors is by no means self-evident.

[–]Dirtyjoe4567[🍰] -4 points-3 points-2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think you just got some crazy bitches

[+]antilopes -8 points-7 points-6 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Who is most violent in relationships depends entirely how you measure it. There are some annual prevalence statistics treasured by MRAs for making it look like violence is "equal".

If you look at the incidence of severe trauma from violence in relationships females bear by far the heaviest load and there is no way to slice the statistics to contradict that.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I seem to remember that if you look at the actual ER figures, how many men and women have received treatment there because of domestic violence, it's more men than women. I'm not totally sure though. Anyway, I think that only naive people believe any statistics that have to do with the female victimization without taking a look at the methodology. So much bullshit gets published in the name of the "good cause".

There are some annual prevalence statistics treasured by MRAs for making it look like violence is "equal".

Actually, there are meta-analyses telling that it's equal. You don't seem to know what you are talking about. Are you a Feminist? Sure looks that way.

[–]antilopes -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I put "equal" in quotes because it is a complex term with all sorts of different interpretations, and many ways of attempting to measure those interpretations. Among all that complexity you certainly can pick out some equal-looking figures if that is your goal.

More than equal if you like. In couples with only one-way violence during a year, the woman is the initiator in 55%, 60%, 70% (choose your study) of those couples. As a registered MRA I have that statistic tattooed on my forearm for quick reference.
But so what? Why do so many men take such comfort from that particular figure, which contains exactly zero information about frequency or severity?

Yes of course ERs will record more men treated for DV injuries but those are mainly men attacking each other, which is irrelevant to the question of partner violence.

I think that only naive people believe any statistics that have to do with the female victimization without taking a look at the methodology. So much bullshit gets published in the name of the "good cause".

Here's some nice clear methodology: counting deaths. Statisticians love deaths because they are perfectly clear, we don't need to argue over dead vs alive. And everybody gets counted because it is seldom possible for partnered people to disappear the way single people sometimes do.

The score for intimate partner homicides is men kill three women for every man killed by his female partner. That is from Australia, the % is similar in other English speaking countries.

ER records for life-threatening injuries are by far the most reliable injury records. Treatment can not be avoided, the nature of the injuries is much more likely to be obviously violent, and police involvement is extremely likely.
A major US study found men grievously injuring women was far more prevalent than the reverse - two to one I think.

Moderately severe injuries also had a weaker gender bias toward men injuring women, but less strong.

ER records are least meaningful at the least severe end. If a man claims his injury is from doing some dumb male risk-taking stuff nobody questions it, while a woman might be discreetly separated from her partner and interviewed by a social worker looking for DV. So I suggest we discard the least severe injuries. This is sad because from memory they are roughly equal. But science cares nothing for our feelings.

And if we were actually concerned with harm rather than point-scoring, why would be be so fascinated with minor cuts & bruises when there is a whole world of deep stabbing, concussion, broken bones, broken teeth, dislocated joints, skin grafts from scalding etc?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Except boys face more dating violence than men do (UBC study), and men in Canada experience more domestic violence than women do (StatsCan).

[–]DogArgument 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That doesn't mean that women are more likely to display conduct disorders or aggressive behaviours than men though. Domestic violence is just one specific type of aggressive behaviour.

[–]babno 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

riddle me this, why are 80% of suicides men when women are more prone to depression then men.

[–]decomposedGoat 21 points22 points23 points 6 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Suicide method. Men choose the gun far more often than women. Women make more attempts than men, but are less successful. Even in countries with strict gun laws, men choose methods (e.g. hanging) with higher mortality than other (e.g. pills).
https://www.verywellmind.com/gender-differences-in-suicide-methods-1067508

[–]bakedpotato486 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

So what are you saying? Are men more sure they want to die? Do women not really want to die? Or are women incompetent at killing themselves?

[–]decomposedGoat -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I was only stating the fact that men choose methods that are more successful more often, which accounts for the gap in deaths despite the fact that more women attempt suicide. There's a multitude of factors, and each case is likely different to a degree. Some facts that may have bearing on the reason are:

access to and familiarity with guns (men are eight times more likely to own a gun than women in the US)
wound site selection (for firearm deaths) due to "fear of facial disfigurement" women tend not to shoot themselves in the head as often as men (resulting in higher probability of death in men)

I don't know if I'd be willing to ascribe an intentionality gap among sexes... shooting yourself in the chest, for example, is still pretty intentional. Additionally, knowledge of specific drug toxicity is not commonplace, so the effectiveness of pills as a method for suicide may be overestimated by the person making the attempt.

[–]bakedpotato486 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Again, you're focusing on gun deaths even though, as you've said, in countries with heavier gun laws and lower gun ownership there is still much higher male suicide success. It's not about the guns.

[–]decomposedGoat 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am interested in hearing your opinion.

I was trying to show choice of method has an impact. If you take statistics outside the US, men choose hanging more than women, which is also deadlier than pills which men choose less than women.

I don't know WHY the methods chosen differ significantly.

Women have a greater fear of pain. They also want to leave a "pretty corpse" and also want to avoid overly traumatizing whoever finds them. This all leads them to choose pills over a gun/knife.

Smh why do people in this sub feel the need to insist at every opportunity that men are better than women? That misogynistic bullshit isn't at all what this sub is meant to be about, and is deeply inappropriate when talking about suicide rates.

Given the context, pretty sure that's sarcasm

[–]DogArgument 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And it's still inappropriate both for the conversation and for men's rights discussions. Joking about how men are better than women is still not good.

[–]2JMAN89 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Man, I don't care, I'm just pointing out that based on context that probably sarcasm. If it is not, it's a stupid ass comment.

I'm trying to tell you it's dumb to feel the need to respond to sarcasm. Just ignore it or take it for the stupid comment that it is.

If that comment is not sarcasm, you are correct and should spend time to correct such speach as it is ignorant and sexist

[–]DogArgument -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Even if it's sarcasm, I stand by everything that I said. Taking every opportunity to insist that men are better than women includes opportunities to do so in a joking way.

I'm trying to tell you it's dumb to feel the need to respond to sarcasm.

And I tell you that this is an asshole thing to say. I can reply to what I like thanks. I took issue with that comment so I replied to it. If you don't like that, ignore it or take it for the stupid comment that you feel it is. Rather than replying but then declaring that you don't care when you get a reply back.

[–]SwiggityStag 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Tried asking for help for the past 7 years, got nothing. Had a crisis line tell me that it's just because I moved recently and I'll be fine in a few months.

[–]DogArgument 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You asked for help for 7 years solid? What does that mean? Who were you asking? What were you expecting to get that you didn't get?

That does sound like a bad crisis line, though I don't imagine that they said it quite the way that you're claiming. One bad anecdote doesn't change my view though.

[–]SwiggityStag 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I've been going to my doctor, contacting organisations, everything I can find. I was stuck on a medication that actually made things worse for two full years because my doctor wouldn't listen to me. I've been turned down by an organisation offering therapy because I was "too complicated for them" (in their own words)

By the way, that's exactly what they said. You don't get to tell me about my own experiences because they don't fit the narritive you want to push in the form I described them in.

One of my close friends got institutionalised, they kept him pumped full of meds and sedatives for a couple of weeks, then sent him home like everything was fine.

Believe what you want, but getting help for mental health as a man is near impossible.

[–]DogArgument -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

What were you expecting them to do, that they didn't?

And what was the organisation that turned you down for being too complicated? Did they refer you to anywhere else that you could get help?

[–]SwiggityStag 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Supply the therapy these places promised, actually listen to what was wrong, show some vague hint of basic compassion?

It was IAPT, the actual main, government funded organisation for mental health in my country. They sent me a follow-up letter with the names of some other organisations, all of which I either couldn't afford, or had a waiting list of over a year. Bearing in mind I have suicidal tendencies.

[–]SwiggityStag 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]DogArgument 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ah, that does suck that they wouldn't help you. Do you think that your gender affected that? Because I'd imagine that they're just not equipped to handle suicidal people. I know that GPs need to administer a specific test (I don't know the name but it's ~6 multiple choice questions) to determine if you're a suicide risk, with you being sectioned immediately if you tick specific boxes.

You mention a 1 year waiting list, did you eventually get through that waiting list and get care?

It does suck that the NHS sometimes doesn't offer adequate support, but that's a problem with NHS funding overall, not with them not giving care to men.

Incidentally, how did non-professionals react if you went to them to support? Do you feel that your gender played a part in nobody giving you any support?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Pure, unadulterated BS. There are already social experiments designed to check if men will receive help compared to women when they're homeless, suicidal, or angry and upset. Men are dismissed as angry young men or told that things will become better. Or the classic fucked-up line 'Man up'.

I feel guys are more practical and methodical with their approach. They're more likely to suicide by hanging or shooting which has less margin for error. Girls are usually overdose or bloodletting which is less likely to kill you.

[–]DogArgument -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More girls act on suicidal feelings, but I've never seen a source saying that they're more likely to act on suicidal feelings. Given that more women experience suicidality, it shouldn't be assumed that they're more likely to attempt suicide just because they make up more of the total attempts.

those kind of deaths dont factor in the statistics

[–]babno 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because women choose less effective/recoverable means. Women attempt suicide far more than men, but due to fear of pain, wanting to leave a "pretty corpse", not wanting to traumatize whoever finds them, they're more likely to use something like pills over a gun.

[–]thornhead 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The issue to me is in what’s not highlighted. Pointing out facts about depression and aggression is fine. The problem is they’re talking about suicide which affects men in far greater numbers. It doesn’t say that though, it goes on to cherry pick stats that make it seem like it affects women more and even that men are at fault.

For me at least, it’s not the facts themselves I take issue with it’s that they are presented in a way to make women the victim even though they’re not.

I’ll give a personal anecdote. Last semester I had a feminist professor. I’m just trying to get my degree, and do what she assigns. She had us write a paper about underrepresentation if minorities in our field and basically said that white men are controlling everything and oppressing everyone else. When I did the research for the paper I found that wasn’t the case at all. Minorities were not only fairly represented, but if anything the data showed they were over represented. As the only white male in the class I wasn’t going to write about that to this woman. So I cherry picked stats and manipulated data to write the paper she wanted. I got an A+ on the paper, but it was bullshit. I never lied, but I “mislead with the truth”.

For those of us that know about the subject this refers to it’s clear that something other than the truth is being presented. Just because it uses facts to do that doesn’t make it any better. If anything, I would argue that manipulating data to present a false narrative is worse than simply presenting flawed data.

[–]babno -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well I wouldn't know that because OP cherry picked two sentences and didn't provide a source. I see he says "the 2nd result in google" which means he's either stupid or intentionally hiding the source given that results change depending on the persons search history, location, if they have Alexa recording every word they say, etc.

So since I haven't seen the source I won't comment on it. I will however note that while it's true men successfully commit suicide more, women attempt it more, which is symptomatic of their higher depression rates. Both are serious problems.

I'll also note that the higher attempt numbers isn't (purely) because "It's not a suicide it's a cry for help". Pills WILL kill you, it's just that there's a chance to find them and have their stomach pumped before they die. Not so with a gunshot to the head. Rather, women choose less violent means for a number of reasons. For starters they're less violent, and have a greater fear of pain. They also have a desire to leave a "pretty corpse" and to avoid traumatizing whoever finds them.

"...conduct disorders or aggressive behaviors..."

In terms of overused, gender-biased rhetoric, "agressive" is now to men in many places what "bossy" was for women just a few years ago.

Why aggressive or bossy? Why not "assertive"? If it's not a conduct violation, then it's not actually bossy or aggressive, is it?

[–]Emperorerror 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

People whining about "bossy" were stupid. People whining about "aggressive" are equally stupid. They're words, they describe things, so long as it's an accurate usage it's fine.

Scratch that, whining about aggressive is worse, because it doesn't even carry a negative connotation much of the time. "He aggressively pursued his studies". I can't really think of bossy being used in a positive light.

Actually what (I think) the picture is trying to say is that when women are depressed, they get more of the sadness and anxiety shit. When men are depressed, they tend to get aggressive and angry. Which is 100% true and it's all thanks to testosterone.

Men and women often show different signs and symptoms of depression. It's partially because of social pressures of "men don't cry" but it is also because of testosterone.

[–]FaerilyRowanwind 78 points79 points80 points 6 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

It’s actually true. It’s not that men don’t get depressed or anxious it’s about how it is represented. I’d argue it is misleading.

There are reasons why women and men have different rates for suicide as well. Both in the attempt and in completion of task. With many factors that play apart. Like access to a gun.

All people are less likely to commit suicide if they do not have access to a gun. Women are more likely to use methods that are less damaging to their bodies and the way they look. Those methods just happen to be more reversible. It’s not that they weren’t any less certain of what they were doing. (As someone who works in suicide prevention it really bothers me when it is said that it is just a cry for attention.)

There are a lot of factors that go into it. Girls are more likely when they are younger. Boys when they are older. It’s all sorts of complicated.

Which is why it is important that the methods of help are set for the different demographics and their needs. We shouldn’t treat male anxiety and depression the same as you would treat women. And there needs to be more in mental health who’ve a concentration on the sociological and biological needs that males have in terms of depression and anxiety.

It’s late. I hope I made sense. Please feel free to let me know if I didn’t make sense.

Guns, eh? China has 9.7 per 100k, US is like 13 per 100k. So... China has a lot of guns too, eh? Belarus is 26 per 100k... They must have insane amounts of guns there.

Guns mean jack shit when someone wants to die, it's just simpler.

[–]FaerilyRowanwind 15 points16 points17 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

http://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/suicide-rate-by-country/

It appears that women are more likely to commit suicide in China than men are. They also have cultural methods that play apart in their suicide. Many of them jump.

A study was done with people who were severely depressed and found that access to a gun was a leading deciding factor in whether or not they attempted at all. For women and for men.

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/magazine/guns-and-suicide/

Don’t get me wrong. If someone want to die then they will do what they need to to accomplish it. My female cousin pulled the trigger twice. The idea isn’t that more suicides happen just that they are more likely to happen with access to a lethal tool. And guns can be quick. (I’m Not arguing guns should be controlled for this reason only that it is just another factor in a long list of factors that plays into suicide in general)

The biggest thing I’m trying to say is we need better methods of help. For example. The type of help you would offer in China would have to be different than the type of help that would be given in another country because the factors change. Just as male and females have differing factors that move towards suicide.

[–]DownrightCaterpillar 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The idea isn’t that more suicides happen just that they are more likely to happen with access to a lethal tool.

These are contradictory statements.

[–]antilopes 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The suicide sex ratio is higher in the US than in other English-speaking countries, (e.g. 3.5 vs 3.0) I'd guess because it is so saturated with guns.

In the early 90s the US introduced some restrictions (background checks, (3 or 5?) day cooldown period. There was a big swing in male suicide methods to the next most lethal method, but there was a small residual % of men's lives saved, that constituted a boatload of men's lives saved. The US sex ratio has dropped over the years from 4.0 to 3.5, which it didn't in other countries so far as I know.

Guns don't kill people, guns kill men.

[–]FaerilyRowanwind 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s interesting because men are more likely than women to have guns as well. So do men have. Higher completion rate because they are that committed or because of other factors like access to a gun? Again not taking away from the need for help because the rate of depression and anxiety doesn’t change.

[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Guns are a significant but relatively much smaller factor than sex.

Men's rate is about double in much of the world, 3x in the English speaking countries, and 4x - 6x in the old Soviet empire. That might be endemic alcoholism, and societal stuff. And possibly Slavic genes.

China and Bangladesh are the only countries where the women's rate is higher, and only slightly.

Where dis you get those values from? According to this wikipedia page:

USA is #1 with 120.5 firearms / 100 persons.

China is #139 with 3.6/100

USA has more guns than people. It even has more guns than China in spite of population difference.

No you made perfect sense i understand were your comming from i do respectfully disagree that if someone doesn't have a gun they are less likely to commit as there are many other methods of suicide such as suffocation jumping drowning hanging or poison though you are likely to throw up pills

[–]SwiggityStag 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Guns give you less time to think and panic. Nothing else is that quick, easy and certain. If you try to suffocate yourself, you'll panic when you start losing air. Jumping and hanging requires you to motivate yourself to actually do it, it can be hard to take that final step. It's near impossible to get hold of a poison that's going to kill you with 100% certainty, and it's going to be slow and painful.

[–]AdChao8 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (7 children) | Copy Link

There is no sexism in your post. Girls/women are more susceptible to depression and anxiety. Boys/men are more likely to display aggressive behavior. These things are both undeniably true, nothing sexist about it and certainly nothing sexist about including it in what looks like course literature on the subject of mental health.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

How are girls more susceptible

[–]AdChao3 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Brain chemistry and hormones basically. The average woman experiences more negative emotion than the average man. "They score higher in neuroticism" is the more technical term. Since negative emotion is pretty much the pre-requisite for depression and anxiety, girls/women are more likely to find themselves with either.

That said, you seem to think that susceptiblility = severity. That's not it at all. The opposite seems to be true. More women get depressed, but the average depressed man is a lot more negatively impacted by it than the average depressed woman.

[–]Emperorerror 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Could I have a source on the latter part? I've never heard that.

[–]AdChao1 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Don't have any handy and not gonna dig for one right now. I can expand some on why I'd say that though.

  1. Men kill themselves far more which, while far from conclusive, it is mildly indicative.
  2. Society is generally speaking harsher on men with mental illness than women. Men's status in society is more reliant on mental well-being that women's. We're expected to be strong, steady, reliable and successful. That's a no-go when you're depressed. Anecdotally you are also less likely to find help and support outside of what you pay for as a straight man with mental illness. Support groups and organisations far too often exclude straight men.
  3. Depression also effectively replicates the brain chemistry of being at the rock bottom of the ladder. That state of mind can be argued as more harming to men because of our evolutionary psychology. We are generally speaking more driven by and psychologically wired for the social hierarchy. (As opposed to women being the same for the close-knit relationships and family) It is world-crushing for a man to suffer that brain chemistry. No future, no hope, no nothing, and you become invisible and unaccounted for by a large portion of the population, though that's an entire conversation on its own.

This is in general terms obviously, and there are exceptions left, right, up and down. I do realize a lot of the above could use some sources as well, but you got something to work with now if you want to look into it yourself. I am not a professional myself, but I have over a decade of fairly severe insomnia, depression, and anxiety on my back, countless hours with professionals, and hundreds of hours of lecture and reading material to just understand things better. A good introduction to all of this is jordan peterson's psychology lectures "Personality and its transformations" on youtube.

I will say I should probably not have included "a lot" in my original post, because I don't know for sure that that's true. Gonna go ahead and edit it out.

[–]Emperorerror 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for the detailed response, I do appreciate it. All possibilities for sure! But I'd need a study indicating a severity disparity to believe it. I'm not sure if there's any literature indicating otherwise, either. I do have some background in psychology and neuroscience which is partially why I ask.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That does sound about right given the cultural stigma around men being seen as "weak" compared to the endless positivity and support women seem to receive.

[–]DownrightCaterpillar 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Idk what "go get depressed means" but it's hard to tell when men severely under-report pretty much everything. That being said, the fact that there's dramatically more men committing suicide indicates there are a boatload of men who are depressed but who are not represented in statistics about male vs. female rates of depression.

[–]LeL000 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]chocothrowaway929 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Both men and women get depression and anxiety, it's just that men tend to display it in the form of agressiveness.

Also to hypothize a little, this might be a factor in why male depression goes more unnoticed since someone acting agressively just comes off as an asshole and people won't try to understand; while if someone just bursts out crying it's the opposite. And it could also be a factor in the higher succcess numbers of male suicide; they may display higher compulsiveness which leads to more intense and eventually successful suicide attempts.

I think his point is there are much more important aspects of mens rights than this.

Here's some examples;

Parental rights- courts are extremely biased toward the mother, fathers tend to get shafted in parental right cases. This is why you can read stories about men getting jailed for criticising judges who gave custody of their children to clearly unstable mother's just because they were the mother's. These men are criticising the judges after their children ge murdered. Source

Lack of options for male victims of abuse, such as spousal abuse or rape.

Death rate of male workers.

Homelessness, men vastly outnumber females.

And plenty more I didn't show.

Sexist comments are very low in this list. They are not a good part of society, but I would rather use our platform here to help men raise themselves up.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The scientific literature does show that women are more prone to depression and anxiety and that men are more likely to display aggressive behaviors. This isn't sexism. These are just average differences between the sexes. Obviously there are depressed men and aggressive women, but statistically, there are more depressed / anxious women and aggressive men. It's just psychology.

[–]guidedhand 17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There ARE fewer men with depression and there ARE more men who suicide. The original screen cap wasn't drawing any conclusions, was just restating statistics.

[–]DownrightCaterpillar -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There ARE fewer men with depression

You can't prove this. You can only record the people who self-report as depressed/suicidal, which invariably are majority female. You're not accounting for male under-reporting.

and there ARE more men who suicide.

THIS is much more objective; we don't need dead people to self-report, so it's more clear that these stats are actually accurate.

[–]nexalicious 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You’re completely misunderstanding the post, the study doesn’t draw conclusions that boys and men never get depressed; it merely states that girls are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety

men’s rights is important but ignorance of the fact everyone suffers from mental health drives us backwards

[–]DownrightCaterpillar 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It states that there are more reported instances of depression and anxiety in girls/women. That isn't comprehensive or conclusive. I don't see why you're in this sub if you're just going to push normative ideas that undermine men's ability to get attention for our problems.

[–]DogArgument 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]FireRed1 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Read the article and you'll see my issue with it. They decide to focus entirely on the women's side of things, which is what I'm talking about

[–]DogArgument 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The article is about the uptick in female suicides in relation to male suicides though. That's what the story is. Girls starting to use more deadly methods to attempt suicide is worth reporting on, both from a journalistic point of view and in terms of being a story which will get clicks.

Writing an article about one gender's side of an issue isn't a problem. It would only be a problem if the work to resolve that issue isn't applied fairly. Or if the media outlet is reporting on the two sides in an unbalanced manner (though again, this can be explained by them reporting what gets clicks, in my opinion).

It's just like how an article about male suicide rates doesn't need to talk at length about women's suicide rates. Both genders don't need equal or proportional representation in every single discussion.

Jonathan Haidt talks about how young girls today are being admitted to hospital for self-harm at record rates and he thinks that the rise in social media use is an antecedent. That seems plausible to me.

[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Self harm has always existed but at one time it was usually discovered independently by each person.

I read somewhere that changed with the very popular book Listening to Prozac in 1993. Self harm became more widely known and the number of practitioners increased. In some circles it acquired a social signalling and bonding function.

Reddit's /SelfHarmPics sub was banned last year, it had always been controversial. It did some good support but the pics inevitably encouraged a competitive and validating element which is obviously harmful to some people. I believe many people who would otherwise have found harmless superficial cuts to be adequate, eventually became deep cutters because they were exposed to it on the sub.

[–]mementomori1606 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What you seem to be suggesting is some sort of social learning of self-harm. It's an interesting idea and I hadn't thought to consider it that way.

I suppose the other consideration though is that rates of anxiety are also increasing. I think the prevailing idea is that increased rates of anxiety and depression are mediating factors between increased social media use and increased self-harm. In other words, increased use of social media is causing increased anxiety and depression which is causing increased self-harm.

Haidt points out that the rates of self-harm and suicide among boys have not increased along with the uptick in girls. Haidt thinks this is likely due to girls being more sensitive to the effects of social media. I suppose, to take the social learning perspective, we may suggest boys are less likely to copy behaviour observed online, but I'm not sure that is a generalised finding.

[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That all sounds reasonable to me. I wasn't aware of the increase in detected self-harm in girls but not boys. It is far more stigmatised for boys though, it would be difficult to measure absolutely. A gendered increase in whatever measures they do have is concerning.

[–]mementomori1606 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There has been significant growth in self-harm and suicide in young girls that clearly outstrips any growth in boys. I lack the tech skills to copy a link here while I'm on my phone, but you can find Jon Haidt tweeting about it on 10 Jan 2019.

Many of the measures used are as valid as possible, and certainly should not be assumed to be the result of differential levels of stigma.

I bring this up is because there other elements of the mens rights crowd that are intent on playing opposition to the rad fem agenda and counter any assertion that girls may suffer more from some conditions with "boys suffer too!". It's bullshit. We need to acknowledge facts as facts.

[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men and women can get depression or anxiety,

Women are raised allowed to be emotional. And are told to tell others when they aren’t ok.

Men are supposed to be the stronger sex (physically), and thus they are told to “toughen up” when they try to talk about their emotions!

Wait, i thought women were less privileged..?

Some here may be unduly criticising OP.

Males seek help for depression less often and so are diagnosed less often. That doesn't necessarily mean they experience less, only perhaps that they report less. They may soldier on, living lives of quiet desperation.

Higher pressures on men may be reason at once for more depression yet less reporting. There may also be lesser tolerance for men reporting; broken men aren't attractive to women.

Finally, successful suicide certainly indicates severe depression, and men are the majority in that category.

Media articles about suicide rarely mention the higher male death rate until late in the article, if at all.

It is not impossible for straight white American males to get ahead but it is very difficult. Achieving elected office or a senior position in a company are not realistic targets since the flood of gay black women displaced all the straight white men.

I heard there are efforts under way to find out whether Wyoming exists. If it does it will be converted into a reservation for the remaining straight white men which have been detected.

Listen, its a harsh truth, but there's a catch... According to them girls are twice as likely to be depressed, although ~70/75% of suicides are male. Bmo female depression (in general) means not being constantly happy and emotional eating. Guys need to deal with ACTUAL depression (suicide thoughts, cutting/self abuse, suppressing emotions, crying yourself to sleep ect...) The difference between man and Women is that both are struggling in life, although majorly women complain and say men have it easy since they don't feel entitled to share how they feel.

Only a tiny percentage of people who experience depression attempt suicide. All of those men who don't attempt suicide, do you contend that they aren't ACTUALLY depressed? They're just unhappy? Since if you don't attempt suicide, you can't be experiencing ACTUAL depression right? Wrong, that isn't what depression is.

Do you actually have any basis at all for your opinion other than the suicide rate? Because I swear, some people just see one statistic that agrees with their preexisting point of view and then quote it in response to anything tangentially related. And given that you think female depression is just not being constantly happy and emotionally eating, you seem like one of those people.

(suicide thoughts, cutting/self abuse, suppressing emotions, crying yourself to sleep ect...)

Do you seriously think that only men suffer those depression symptoms? More women attempt suicide than men, but of course only men have suicidal thoughts. Women don't cut themselves, or suppress emotions (which incidentally isn't at all a symptom of depression), or cry themselves to sleep...

You're not an MRA, you're just a poorly informed misogynist.

except women blow fuses over nothing. Women r more likely to hit men than vice versa. think of shows where the woman slaps a guy becoz she is mad, but men can't even hit a woman in self defence.

Yea its not right that a woman can really hit anybody and get away with it but a man will most likely go to jail but not all women blow fusses over nothing but unfortunately alot do
