Women are also capable of cheating, (and cheat at rates nearly as high as men) and men are very capable of being afraid that their hot girlfriend will cheat on them. Men that are insecure, like women that are insecure, are going to fear their partner cheating. Women can and do have nonchalant attitudes towards relationships with men they aren't very attracted to. A man doesn't need to look better. He just needs to be her best option. Which depends on what she values. If it looks then yeah. But most women look for more than just looks. Like wealth, status, charisma etc...

Women file 70% of divorces so they are most likely to leave. Which would imply a man is more likely to stick it out. But also the #1 reason for divorce is infidelity. Men are also more likely to cheat. Therefore the previous 70% would be invalid as it is more than likely the mans fault. So who really knows who is more loyal.

A relationship in which you are better looking is usually better for you because it less likely that they will find a better match and therefore more likely to preserve through relationship adversity.

I understand what you are getting at, but the bottom line is that relationships work best when people find their partner adequately attractive, and average looking or less attractive women may not find guys who looks worse than them to meet their minimum attractiveness threshold, and might just rather be single.

I agree with your assertion but disagree with your logic. I think relationships where the woman “looks better” work best because she isn’t actually “better”. They’re equally desirable and being with someone equally desirable makes you less likely to regret getting locked down by someone and be miserable over time.

If you base attraction off of how many people find you attractive at a given moment then, yes, if she’s young she’s “more” physically desirable just because men tend to find a greater variety of younger women more physically attractive than vice versa. But if you define their physical desirability relative to other men/women, and average it across time, a woman that “looks better” than the man when she’s young is probably about equally as physically desirable overall. In other words, if you take most happy couples at age 50 +/- 5 and youthify them back to 25 +/- 5, the woman will “look better”.

Women with unrealistic physical standards of men have managed to convince you that two equally physically desirable men/women dating is the “guy dating up” and a guy just treating his SO well must be him “chasing” and “going the extra mile”.

Could someone please explain to me the basis for the suggestion (presented in OP's post but seems to be a common belief among women) that "men like to chase"? This goes completely against my own experience as a man and against everything I've observed in other men.

It's true that some men enjoy the "thrill of the hunt" but this is a much smaller percentage of men than is typically assumed (I'd say it's probably ~30%). Importantly, men who enjoy the thrill of the hunt tend to also be men who have above average levels of success with women. Otherwise, they wouldn't enjoy it because it would be a relentless grind with no payoff.

This thrill of the hunt dynamic, however, even for the men it applies to is only really relevant for short term dating. Men don't enjoy constantly having to try to please their gf/wife. They may appear to enjoy it, because they enjoy having someone who is 'above' them, but the satisfaction is largely derived from that rather than the supplicating behavior.

In long term relationships, the dynamic always flips -- first the man chases to get things started, then the women does to get the relationship. Ideally, for a man, the women will continue to chase. Women are not attracted to submissive, supplicating behavior, but men are. Granted, there is a way to chase in a dominant way, but if the relationship dynamic is defined by the man chasing this implies he is in the 'power-down' position.

Truthfully, where most men go wrong is exactly this. Men have to date down for short-term hookups, so when they get into a long-term relationship, it's often with a girl they could not get otherwise so they fear losing her. As the inverse of this, women can (and often do) date up (with hotter/higher status etc.) for short-term hookups and have to lower their standards to get commitment. Within this dynamic, the woman has the power and the man is obliged to chase. Why would a man enjoy having to compensate for his weaker position in a relationship by chasing?

The guys I know who are best with women who get into long-term relationships all date 'down' with a girl who chases them and worships the ground they walk on. That's every man's dream but few will experience it.

I think the main problem is that people don't understand what looks good for the other sex, women think man like eye lashes and stuff like that. For me I didn't understand how much women value height, and are ok with some degree on fatness on the male site if it's paired with some muscle.

"Looks" is just a secondary thing that is abstracted from "is he able to defend me or provide for me" otherwise that is not that important also for women smell (compatible immun system for breeding) is very important.

Also it's a lot about choice of cloth style and self value how the man sees hisself... so to what do we compare you can't compare male and female beauty really, we can just compare maybe to other male so for man 80% of male look uglier than the average women, but that is throug a hollywood informed male lense, that fetishises women.

Male and female good looks are in a completely different universe. And women have a longer list on requirements than man so because of that logically looks can't be that important and besides the smelles they also are more about sounds, like a deep voice is probably more sexy than a sixpack.

Most man have not the slightest idea what women like in male looks beside the surfacial stereotype, thin and good hair or so.

But the whole beaty and the beast and shreck kind art points to that women like "monsters", they can be to a degree fat, (big), when he is also strong. So this discussions become always a bit strange if we just start with the conception people even know who is more beautiful, yes sure to the men she hopefully is more beautiful than him if he is not gay and she is not super ugly that is a given... but that is not objective statement.

Mix in birth control and she values what pregnant women like... more... certain kinds of birth control at least... so there is no objective statement like drunk women probably also sometimes like different guys than sober women, they do also with birth control (simulated permanent pregnancy).
