I’ve seen a lot of sentiments online about straight women complaining their male partners need micromanaged, usually it’s implied as ‘mothering’ or some such.

Context:

I’m very neurospicy (ASD, ADHD++) and when my wife and I were still early in our relationship (I wasn’t diagnosed at the time), I basically always kind of pissed her off—mostly because she would hint at a need (cleaning this or that, making dinner, basic domestic help) and I would just.. miss it.

For context, I’d say I probably am heavily leaned towards needing ‘mothered’ because it’s not uncommon for me to just forget to eat for two days, I hyperfixate on work or hobbies and just lose time.

Fast forward a few years, my diagnosis happens and we’re suddenly able to make sense of my behavior (which often felt not under my control) and she starts asking me for things more directly and boom, cohesion.

Actual Question:

I’m curious what are your experiences with this dynamic, when does communication become mothering?

Do you tend to drop hints rather than ask directly, if so why do you think you gravitate to that approach?

Has this dynamic caused you to split with your partner?
