What is your explanation for why men value "cheerfulness" in women, and why women value "mystery/intrigue" in men?

The unattractive mysterious man is bit a phantom that disappears. The other half, the “intrigue part” answers itself.

If an unattractive woman is cheerful, she is annoying, let us move that portion out of the way. The cheerfulness can be taken as interest.

Men look to women to upregulate them; be sweet, happy, undemanding and compliant. A Pollyanna or Manic Pixie Dream girl is that fantasy; she doesn’t have needs or problems, just entertains him.

We went out with my trainer and the girls who work the front desk of my gym the other night. The girls were college chicks who weren’t necessarily MPDGs but were very obviously young and bubbly. It’s amazing how much more enjoyable they are to be around than the average girl a little older in her mid to late 20’s. They weren’t completely destroyed and jaded by life, dating and men yet. They were a little naive but it was endearing, not annoying. There’s something about that type of femininity that is really enjoyable to be around and endearing that I can’t really put my finger on.

Think about some of the girls who post here. They come off so jaded and all around miserable to speak to. Maybe that is not how they act in real life but it’s a massive contrast to how the bubbly, fun, feminine archetype appears. For obvious reasons, one is preferable over the other.

More women like cheerful, happy, fun, confident guys then mysterious weirdos though. If you're pretty average looking, being fun makes you more attractive, if you're average looking and mysterious you're just a creep.

I do agree that men value cheerfulness in women, but I've always found that men are drawn in by some level of mystery as well. I think it depends on what kind of man we're talking about though.

In general, people don't like being bored. Women like to be armchair psychologists and understand why the dark broody guy is like that in the hopes that he will have a soft spot for only her. Men don't care about that, but they also don't want to be bored. The sacred prostitute is an archetype as old as time. The woman fully in touch with her femininity, filled with life, that can "redeem" a man is present throughout most mythology. What else is this other than a MPDG? Boring, unassuming guy gets whisked away by a fun ethereal girl and he has a reason to live again.

Not every guy in some reverse harem is brooding and edgy. But the women who like this type like him because they feel a sense of accomplishment and power to be able to “take an alpha,” in my opinion.

As for guys, a bubbly woman is pleasant to be around and will likely be in the mood for lots of sex, so this one isn’t hard to figure out.

Men value cheerfulness because they value specifically what they want women to direct at them. Women value mystery and intrigue because men really are simple as fuck creatures on average and any guy who isn't able to be figured out in 30 seconds stand out from the crowd of mostly samey dudes who self describe the same way, have the same general interests that have nothing to do with her, and exhibit the same general range of behaviors.

TLDR: Straight culture is boring af especially white straight culture and women are literally so bored by the average guy they'll take risks on dudes who can at least keep them mentally interested. Go look at a series of Male R4R ads and count the number of synonyms for "Nerd" you see in the advertisements and titles. Bet you come up high.

Its lib/womentalk for attractive /unattractive. An ugly male is simply creepy, while the exact same wording and exact same behavior is seen as "mysterious" if the guy is attractive.

I think men are generally entitled, sexist idiots, so "cheerfulness" indicates vulnerability, and a lower likelihood of confronting them on all of their shittiness. Women are generally discouraged and alienated by men's mediocrity (even the less attractive ones are rejecting losers basically constantly) so, "intrique" signals, "not a completely braindead turd."

Also i object to this line of thinking and do not think that men or women go for these things to the exclusion of other things- you just hear about them more because corporations profit by that dynamic. It's promoted so that instagram shares will rise.

In literature/media? My thought is novelty... An uncomplicated woman and a complicated man are two things I don't find all that often in my day to day life, and seem interesting by default.

If you're talking "Pill Theory," probably just ideals for either gender. Though it's mostly anecdotal to my experience, it would seem to be hard work for a woman to remain uncomplicated and upbeat, or a man to deepen his worldview and social intelligence, and could point to someone being more well-rounded.

It could be as simple as "cheerful"="good with kids/people" and "stoic"="good at practical stuff." You can deduce the reason either gender might select for the other.

AFAIK the mysterious, edgy guy is something teenage girls go for - less so with older women.

I think that about 2/3rds of teenage girls had floppy haired, brooding emo men plastered over their walls at one point. Now they probably look back and think 'ewww'
