What's the difference between red flags and flaws in your opinion?

They’re all flaws. But red flags are flaws that the pragmatic part of your brain knowssss should probably be dealbreakers for you personally.

Each person has to determine their “I can deal with this without growing resentful” yellow 🟡 flags vs their “dealing with this on a regular basis would turn me into a sour and bitter shell of myself” red 🔴 flags.

It’s also a matter of compounding moderate flags: meaning someone with hella of your yellow 🟡 and orange 🟠 flags might drive you just as insane as someone with one serious red 🔴 flag.

The ideal compatibility situation?

NOTE: Obviously life isn’t always ideal for many of us. So you may end up with someone who has your red flag, orange flags, or hella yellow flags. Just don’t act shocked when you constantly feel frustrated, dissatisfied, or at your wit’s end. The writing was unfortunately on the wall.

I think of flaws as imperfections that are tolerable.

Red flags are danger/destruction red flags or intolerable flaws

Example:

I was going to say all red flags are flaws but not all flaws are red flags, but that's not true. Some red flags are just major incompatibilities.

Someone being religious (or not) when you're the opposite and feel strongly about your beliefs could be a red flag, but it's hardly a flaw. Same with wanting children or not, political affiliation, where you want to live, etc.

If you feel strongly enough about some significznt part of your life path and the other person's feeling is in conflict that's a red flag. If they're uncertain it's some sort of flag.

Flaw: Ranges from "this thing annoys me" to "This thing may make this person incompatible with me".

Example: He's not a fan of or allergic to cats. Nothing wrong with them just not being your thing, but I have cats, so if he can't ignore or is very allergic to mine, we may not be compatible.

Red Flag: Ranges from "this thing actively harms his partners" to "This thing may make this person incompatible with anyone who values their safety or sanity".

Example: He hates cats and insists they all hate him and are assholes to him. Most cats flee from him.

Cats are somewhat solitary, so require some personal space. They are also not fully domestic, so still communicate in their own body language, unlike dogs (dogs literally evolved the muscles in their cheeks and eyebrows to smile at humans). They also can't handle a lot of stimulation, and will choose when they do and don't want cuddles. They get along best with people who give them space and learn their language and only cuddle them when and how they consent.

If he expresses an active hatred to cats, and all or most cats actively hate or avoid him, it is very likely a sign that he doesn't respect personal space, refuses to learn other people's point of view, and feels entitled to affection and attention.

Flaws are part of being human — everybody has them, whether they’re just bad habits or weaknesses or whatever.

Red flags are the kind of flaws that signal danger — they’re somewhat individual, in the sense that people have different tolerances for certain kinds of behaviors and different dealbreakers — but for the individual noticing them, they’re a signal that this relationship or individual is going to violate their boundaries, hurt them, or otherwise end up being disappointing and unsatisfying.

1) Flaws a noted problems. You can choose to live with them, change them, or leave.

Red flags are only the potential of problems. Another way to say it would be to call them the symbolic representations of problems you can't directly observe.

For example: "He chews food with his mouth open," is a flaw, if you hate when people do that. "He starts eating his food when it's too hot," is a red flag, because people who do that are likely to chew with their mouth open (to cool their mouths); but you don't actually know yet if he is going to chew with his mouth open.

To use a more relevant example: "He's cheating on me," is a problem, if you're worried about monogamous security. "He has many female friends," is a red flag. He isn't doing anything wrong yet, but you are aware of the hypothetical threats.

2) Ironically, red flags not only differ between individuals, they can be exact opposites.

For example: if instead of monogamous security, you're concerned with empathy and relatability, "He has ZERO female friends," is a major red flag. Again, he isn't doing anything wrong, but you may fear he doesn't like, respect, or relate to women deep-down.

3) Some people distinguish between red and "yellow" flags. When they do so, we are supposed to assume the the red ones are absolute deal-breakers. These tend to be kind of... complex. They often speak to deep-seeded issues.

For example: "He plays video games," may be a green, yellow, or red flag depending on how you feel. The most common rationales are that gaming is escapism or a waste of time. However, this is unlikely to manifest as a red flag unless you're also, consciously or subconsciously, fixated on a bigger hypothetical problem

A red flag is supposed to make you aware “hey! This is a deal breaker! This right here isn’t gunna work if this is what they consider normal!”

A flaw is just an imperfection that’s easy to understand and accept.

For some that could be a red flag. For others it’s just something to accept as a part of their partner that makes them a great match.

I don't know how we're defining red flags here. But red flags are potential flaws. They're an early or indirect indicator of a flaw. Often when we refer to a red flag, we're talking about red flags to flaws that are serious deal breakers. But a red flag itself is just what it sounds like, a flag of a potential problem.

For me a red flag doesn't need to be a flaw. It's just a flag that says STOP. Not for me. And flaw doesn't have to be a red flag.

So for example religion is a red flag for me. It says STOP. why? Because I'm not religious and don't want to be in a relationship with someone who is

Conservatism, belief in gender roles, and being pro-life are all red flags for me.

Conversely a flaw can be stubborness or anxious etc

And neither of those are red flags for me, unless it impacts me to a great extent. E.g. If you're anxious and need comfort and security every now and again is okay. If I basically end up having to hold your hand a lot, then no.

A red flag indicates a flaw. It's simply an easily detectable outward manifestation of that flaw that reveals the flaw.

Flaw: gold digger

Red flag: brags about the actual cost of the last vacation her ex took her on

Flaw: cheater or poly

Red flag: entertains flirting from other men while in a relationship, even if it's over DMs, even if she "never meets them in person." Still keeps in regular contact with exes.

Flaw: Financially irresponsbile

Red flag: "Oh, I don't have cash on me...I'll just put it on my credit card, no big, they never care as long as I pay the minimum each month anyway...it's like free money I can borrow!"

Flaw: Controlling/abusive

Red flag: "You're not allowed to do something that is a core part of who you are, that I knew about you, when we started dating."

Flaw: Insecure

Red flag: "Am I the prettiest girl you've ever been with?" "You're just saying that, right?" (when you compliment her or say you like her)

Not all of these are necessary fatal flaws/dealbreakers for everyone (some may be okay with some of the things on the list) but the point is that the red flag outs the flaw where it wasn't previously apparent.

The purpose of "shit tests" (which both men and women can do) was to see if a situation provoked a red flag response and react accordingly.

Now, here's the key part: What makes the flag "red" is that the flaw it exposes is a dealbreaker for YOU personally.
