According to the side bar, the purpose of this sub is to discuss “sex, relationships, and gender issues, specifically those that relate to TRP and TBP.”

The discourse in this sub is becoming obfuscated due to the sheer variety of backgrounds with which people are debating from. Biology may be mostly the same everywhere in the world, but let’s be honest - “sex, relationships, and gender issues” are going to play out differently on a macro level for a 23yo, LMC, American female vs. a 50yo, UMC, Indian female.

We often rely on the assumption that the person we are debating comes from a similar background as us, and is able to operate within the same frame of reference. However, the ever increasing number of daily comments asking for clarification of demographics illustrates a problem that should, perhaps, be regulated a bit.

  • Has this been considered before?

  • Would anyone here in the community be in support of such an initiative?

important considerations

1) privacy - people may not feel comfortable having their personal demographic info out in the open.

2) validity - who knows if people will be honest about it anyway.

3) more harm than good - focusing on your opponents ethos and demographics rather than the content of their argument may not align with the subs’ direction. I could see someone saying, “you just can’t understand because you’re from the UK and not the US” in a more emotionally charged scenario, which defeats the whole purpose of this idea.

...

I want the same thing everyone else here wants - for the sub to be awesome and not to suck. I believe additional demographic requirements could, potentially, benefit everyone. If anyone else has any thoughts on the matter, please share!
