She's obviously never been challenged like this nor thought deeply about her assumptions. Indeed it doesn't even seem like she asked basic questions like: Is this actually true? Does the data support this? How can I be sure I'm not deceiving myself and reaching incorrect conclusions?

These are all important questions to ask and be brutally honest with ourselves about the answers.

I would have respected her more if she had simply stopped and said "Wow...you know what, I never really thought about all that. Lets talk about those things you brought up further."

No she immediately tried to find anything to support her previously held belief, the narrative she had adopted even going so far as to try and salvage her argument by raising another irrelevant point after her rape point before JP continued, cutting her off. And before anyone tries to say I'm saying rape is irrelevant, I'm not saying that at all. However in the context of this narrative, it is irrelevant because as JP correctly pointed out, horrific things happen to all people but that doesn't mean that just because more women are raped then men that it's somehow a male dominated society.

There are certain things with males that should be focused on for sure. Child custody hearings shouldn’t be pre determined solely by the sex of the parent. Child support shouldn’t be $100,000 a month if the father is rich. Men should be able to speak more openly on their emotions and not be held to a standard of “being a strong man” which causes higher suicide rates and homelessness. However, things should also be focused on with women. Internal biases in recruiting. Sexual harassment. Sexual abuse. Sure, men can experience this too, but almost every single woman I know has had some type of disgusting, traumatizing encounter with a piece of shit, self entitled beta man. There’s no one side in my head. There are issues that need to be worked on in regards to both sexes. It’s not “man v woman” it should be man & woman working together to find solutions to these problems. If a man is an abusive partner, I have no respect for him. If a woman is an abusive partner, I have no respect for her. Feminism means equality for women and men. I am a feminist. I will not hold biases and jump to assumptions.

I just have to add: for those who say “well she deserved it” or “she probably wanted it” about a woman after sexual abuse... y’all need some serious introspection and therapy.

And many things that affect men that he lists are (at least partly) caused by patriarchal stereotypes and gender roles, like mostly men dying in wars and being in prison. Because women are viewed through the patriarchal stereotype of being weak subservient little girls, they are not given prison sentences as harsh and they are not allowed into wars. Patriarchy doesn't always benefit men, it hurts men too.

Also not most people who commit suicide are men, most people who succeed in committing suicide are men. Women actually attempt suicide more often. But the high rate of suicide in men is also affected by patriarchal ideas of what men should be, causing them not to seek help as often, because they do not want to be seen as "weak".

It does intrigue me why men do worse in school, I'd like to see some research into why. To me it always seemed like the boys at my school did not care about education. I wonder if this is something that comes from parents not encouraging their sons to do well at school, or if it is a problem with the school system itself. I do wonder why some people seem to view this as a problem, but the pay gap as a result of women's personal choices. Seems like a bit of a double standard.

He seems to think that the patriarchy can only be ruled by horrible tyrants like in a movie or a dictatorship, but that's not really it, patriarchy is mainly rooted in subtle things like people's attitudes that they spread to each other, and keeping the same people rich (who are men for historical reasons). He is ignoring the structure of society and just focusing on individuals. Obviously your working class male plumber neighbor isn't the main problem, or going out of his way to oppress women and hoard all the money and power to himself, although he might contribute to patriarchy by believing and spreading patriarchal gender roles and voting for people who are in the pockets of the one percent of the one percent.

I do not like him saying "this is the least tyrannical society that has ever been produced". Even if our society is better than the ones before, we can still continue making it better and criticizing the bad parts. At the very end he seems to claim that women were not oppressed even historically, which is very odd. What about the whole not being able to work, vote or own property thing? Sure there have been periods of less and more oppression, but we have to remember the severe oppression that was happening only about a century ago. It's not such a long time, and attitudes from that period still exist today.

Jordan Peterson is denying heaps of historical and sociological evidence that women were indeed treated a little less than slaves and had no basic rights that would enable their independence/ bodily autonomy. But again he thinks sociology is postmodern and he can go fuck himself.

He's a Christian, so he should be aware that most religions promote that women should be submissive to men, I'm aware these social structures emerge because men had most of the financial leverage back then, but none of this justifies how women were expected to remain in abusive relationships, at the same time women couldn't find jobs that could support herself and her child easily. Things have changed drastically, but people still cling onto these social structures, even promote it.

"But men had it hard too" yes. They die in war. Does it still make men assuming its their "right" to beat and rape their wives any less worse? It doesn't even justify treating women like property, it doesn't justify women being branded as "slightly above slaves" by Aristotle. Only in 1993 was marital rape considered a crime.

I could go on and on. If you want to really know how women we're treated as inferior, look no further than any historical written down social contract that talks about how men and women should interact. They weren't even permitted into intellectual positions that didn't require physical strength just because she looked like Eve and was assumed to be more emotional than men.

I'm not saying we're still living in a society that denies women bodily autonomy like they used to 60 years ago. I'm saying Jordan Peterson is a postmodernist. Its not "oppression Olympics" when its literally a fact when people still view women as the inferior sex.

i know JP's a canadian, but i'll speak about the US because i'm american.

why was women's suffrage necessary? because women weren't treated as equal. why have women had lower wages, historically? partly because women's jobs were initially seen as supplementary to her husband's income. men spanking their wives used to be a thing. women were expected to be subservient to their husbands. many of these attitudes are derived from judeo-christian teachings. why on earth would you expect those attitudes to completely disappear within the matter of decades?

we see male-dominated societies all around. in china, boys are much preferred. in india, gang rapes of women are rampant, which is indicative of how women are regarded. in pakistan, honor killings are still a thing. in saudia arabia, women weren't allowed to drive or even be out and about without a man from her household escorting her. we see these inequities all throughout history and in virtually all societies. even by virtue of chance, it's almost a given that our society is, to a degree, male-dominated.

so yes, we do live in a male-dominated society, and many other societies are as well. there may not be laws that force inequities, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

This is an awful argument and exactly what I expect from Jordan Peterson. She makes an initial point then he spends way longer responding and barely let's her get a word in edgewise. The fact is that women are only recently clawing their way into positions of power. Few world leaders are women, and way less the further back in history you go. Many religions have way more restrictions on women than men, and many current cultural trends still have an outsized toll for women.
