My husband does this thing out of nowhere sometimes that causes fights or kills the mood. It just happened now and I wanted to see if anyone knows what is going on here and how I can deal with it, so it doesn't escalate? For context, because it may matter, I am a native English speaker and he grew up in another country, but speaks English fluently.

We were happy and talking about planning a trip and buying new suitcases and here's how the conversation just went:

Me: excited I want to buy Rimowa luggage because it's so nice and high quality!

Him: I'm going to get something cheaper because that brand is so expensive!

Me: well you can buy whichever you want, but when you see the rimowa, you'll know that once you go rimowa you can never go back!

Him: why did you say that?

Me: say what?

Him: getting annoyed/mad the "once you go rimowa you can never go back"? Where did you hear that phrase? Because it comes from "once you go black you can never go back". Where did you hear that?

Me: confused Uhm, I've heard that phrase because i grew up in the unitrd states of america, and you can use that wording with literally anything that you think is better than something else? It's not just used that way? Like if you go hermes you can't go back to louis vuitton. If you go first class you can't go back to economy... sees he's angry What's the matter?

Him: mad You're talking about dcks and sht, that's used to talk about that!

Me: who's talking about d*icks?! I'm talking about luggage??

End scene. It didn't blow up terribly, sometimes it does, but he's in a bad mood about it.

So what is this? What's happening here?

I feel confused about how a regular conversation took a turn into something else, from a phrase I said? I feel like i did something wrong. Did I say something wrong? What could I have done differently in this situation so I can remember that for next time?
