From what I see it's like 90% with friends or other people they know from social circles. Very rare to do it with a total stranger.

The key is that you can't often just make friends and then change the relation type to sexual.

You start out befriending someone while showing your interest and using kino, but perhaps waiting for them to finish up with their current fling before you take further steps with them.

From my experience, the best hook ups are friends of friends. It’s a often a new connection who feels comfortable around you because of the social proof created by having a good mutual friend. If I hit it off with a friend of a friend I usually flirt a bit then grab there number and set up a date at a later time unless it’s at a party or bar and you have the option to escalate to the bedroom or your place.

Strangers I find extremely hard to pull from bars and night clubs because they don’t really know you and don’t know if you’re actually a safe guy.

Friends. Just recently made this mistake again when I started hooking up with but going for a relationship with one of my friends of about 6 years. Switching the dynamic from friends to something more made our friend group awkward because they knew but we were hiding it. We both had feelings but there were a few things like the distance between where we live that made things more complicated so we mutually decided to stop and go back to being friends. It’s been a couple weeks and everything is going back to normal. Maybe we hook up in the future maybe we don’t. I wouldn’t go this route as it’s tough to work into a group friendship but I have had a relationship start this way before. It’s also very hard to recover a friendship if things go south.

You have 3 main options:

hookup apps - you can be direct, pre-screen / text
bars / nightclubs - pickup a stranger, much harder to approach someone IMO
friends / coworkers - harder to keep discreet

I used hook up apps, and just befriended the other person. Sometimes it just was booty call stuff, but most of the time they became friends. So now you have a chill friend who you also can also sleep with.

The Old Maxim of pickup "Don't $#!+ where you eat".

When you are new you will mess up a lot and probably send mix signals to a lot of women. You don't want to do that to friends because things can get messy very quickly and your circle might just assume you are being manipulative. Which is one of the worst reputations you can get in a circle group or if your PUA tactics get sussed out you are branded as pathetic which is the second worse reputation you can have. Build your skills to the point where you are almost a natural so if you decide to run Game on a warm contact it feels like it's just something that happened and it's no big deal. Which allows it's all to stay casual without hurting peoples feelings.

Interesting question. In that regard I am total noob though and cannot answer it. The only sex I had so far was with my long term girlfriends. Have to admit though that getting hook ups on the fly is a skill I want to learn though.

Why do you want to know this op? Are you planning to try it for yourself or what? If that's the case I would recommend to start with people you do not know. Doing it with people you know could be embarrasing because you are going to see this people again and again.
