The gym is the only place I've gone outside for years
Fix that
[–]throwawaysedd1 4 years ago [recovered] (17 children) | Copy Link
Any suggestions?
Edit: more concise
[–]Thin_Protection5616 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
Cafes, bookstores, grocery stores, pedestrian malls, parks, malls, outdoor sports areas, etc.
You aren't going to meet women while sitting at home.
[–]throwawaysedd1 4 years ago [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link
How do you know which places are socially acceptable for meeting women?
[–]Thin_Protection5616 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
How you approach needs to be somewhat congruent to the environment. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry a whole lot about what's socially acceptable.
So far, you've be living your life based on what's socially acceptable. How's that worked for you?
[–]throwawaysedd1 4 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
Tbh, I'm not really sure of a lot of what things are or not socially acceptable. If anything, I think I need to be more socially aware. For instance, if I hadn't read that girls didn't like to be hit on at the gym, I would've been completely clueless and assumed it was fine.
You say not to worry about what's socially acceptable, but you also say that my approach needs to be somewhat congruent to the environment. Isn't that part of being socially acceptable?
[–]Thin_Protection5616 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, emotional intelligence is extremely important .
Here's a small exercise you can do to help you develop that. Go to a crowded outdoor or public area and watch groups of people. Pay attention to how their emotions shift. Try to make guesses about what their emotions are and the nature/quality of the relationships between those people. Over time you'll be able to pick up on smaller and smaller things.

It’s about making a connection. I speak to a lot of men at the gym. My entire crew are men. Single guys married guys. We all have a connection. Our workout. In that crew, two have asked me if I was happily married. I answered and they never asked again. Was I annoyed, nah, was it awkward, nah We still all chat it up during our workouts and after. Who cares. It’s the individual. Some people are just so stiff, they don’t know how to go with the flow. Again, I mentioned before, social cues. Read the body language. One girl walks in with a nasty puss on. She’s a bodybuilder, she doesn’t want to speak to anyone. Once in a blue, I’ll see her chat for a minute. That’s not someone who wants to be approached. She puts on that face, so she’s not approached. Case and point! At the gym, I would take it slow there. Just my opinion. I’m much more experienced then most of the people commenting and I never had an issue getting a man, before and after marriage. Not saying I have a man during lol. But I’ve had many opportunities. The hottest guy in our gym got approached multiple times by women yesterday. It was comical. He happens to be my client. He was getting annoyed that they were interrupting his workout.
[–]KeyGrapefruit1777 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Dude, the only place I would say is socially unacceptable, is a Hospital. Lol. It’s more about reading the social cues. If someone is intense and not giving any eye contact, clearly they want to be left alone. If someone looks up smiles, that’s a more approachable person, BUT don’t come out of the gate hi your hot Want to have a drink. If a woman doesn’t have some dialogue with you, I’m going to guess she will pass. In her mind she’s thinking he didn’t even speak to me. At least get some conversation flowing.
[–]putcoolusernamehere 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Is she obviously in a hurry? Is the setting dark and isolated or otherwise a setting in which approaching a stranger could intimidate them? Is she clearly out with her so? If no to all these, approach away.
[–]chopstickfighter 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You need to work on building your social awareness, which means going out and being social. Join some kind of community (classes, volunteering, church, whatever) where you can develop your socializing skills, and bonus: these might all be places were you can meet women! But the main goal is to become someone who women would want to be with, and improving your social skills is a big step in the right direction. Good luck.
[–]Friendlypotato101 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Even then there's the excuse of "we're not going there to be hit on". You just can't win.
[–]zackit 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
That goes out of the window when the guy approaching is attractive to them.
[–]Friendlypotato101 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
That's the thing bruh...
I'm not attractive, that's my problem with the solution the guy above me gave.
[–]zackit 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Attractiveness is:
A) subjective
B) can be improved on
*in most cases
[–]Friendlypotato101 -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You know what's objective??
Height, the department which I'm lacking at. My face is not completley hideous but it's below average.
So even if I work like hell, can I actually get a girl I want?
I mean don't get me wrong, all the pretty girls have every right to be selective. I wouldn't want them to settle for me. But at the same time, I wouldn't want to settle for someone either.
Therefore, the mentality arises of not even bothering to try.
[–]zackit 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I get it.
I'm satisfied with my height but honestly, sometimes I'm not sure about my face.
I think we should work like hell for ourselves.
More of a chance for girls to come along that way anyway.
[–]Friendlypotato101 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm never against self improvement. I always encourage people to work on themselves. I'm into that stuff as well.
But I just let the guys who are like me know that they shouldn't get their hopes up. You say "more of a chance" because you know you're at least doing ok in height.
Very few of them might luck out (anecdotes exist), but for the most part (99%), women are not gonna see you as attractive. She might see you as a husband material and good provider who she can settle with when she's had enough good sex with actual attractive men (not trying to slut shame them, they have every right to)...but not as someone she feels any type of sexual spark with or looks forward to be in bed with or initiates sex with. Healthy sex life is just not made for us you know. And that's ok. Women don't owe me sex or anything else.
When I use the phrase "give up". I mean "give up on attracting high quality women" and not "give up and be an average couch potato". There's a difference.
It's good that you're at least tall. You won't completely suck. With enough dedication you will do pretty great both socially and with the ladies.
And I'm sure you're better looking than you think since you said "sometimes I'm not sure...". If you were bad looking, trust me you'd know.

Instead of approaching and immediately announcing your intention of going on a date, approach as a friendly gym guy. Asking for their number, asking if they would like to go out, asking to be more than just gym buddies makes the female feel awkward whenever they see you afterwards. But if you just asked about their workout routine, chatted about the gym and its equipment or classes that it offers, chatted about other gym people, chatted about crossfitters, etc, then you get to tests their interests without forcing them to reject you and making every time they see you thereafter, "Oh, there is the guy I rejected again, I hope he doesn't talk to me again."
[–]throwawaysedd1 4 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link
Alright, so guess I have to just keep it casual and indirect.
How bad was it that I've directly approached three girls at the gym?
[–]VisionsOfVisions 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
You’ve kind of ruined the gym experience for those three girls, but it’s not that big a deal. I don’t judge you for your lack of discretion. It happens.
[–]Andetag 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
As long as OP isn’t a persistent creep then it’s those girls who ruined the gym experience for themselves. That said, not all women can stand the tension of an approach and consequential seeing you over and over again. Most women would rather change gyms than come back and see you in my experience. It’s funny but sad.
I don’t recommend gym approach having done a good deal. It’s very social circle based and you have to play the long game.
[–]throwawaysedd1 4 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
Geez, I guess I fucked this up. Is there anything I can do to make it up to them, or should I just leave them alone?

[–]guckindieluft 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is how you get friendzoned.

[–]seddit_seddit -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, basically you talk in a friendly way but your vibe needs to be sexual. Hold deep eye contact and see if she holds it too. It's a good test to determine if she might be attracted to you or not. After a few minutes of friendly chat and confirming attraction, you ask her out. It's that simple. Otherwise, just wish her a good workout and leave.
[–]CompetitionFair7686 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not particularly. You get friendzoned only if you never switch into being flirtatious. The indirect method is fine specially in gyms, and it’s how most people anywhere get into relationships, starting thing sin an indirect way and when the vibe is right switching into sexual flirting and hitting on them.
[–]ImAGhostOooooooo 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I love talking about about the crossfitters 🤣
[–]Ok-Talk-4303 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The gym is not the place for a direct approach like that. If you try to pull girls at the gym you have to treat it from a social circle perspective. Befriend a bunch of people at the gym you regularly talk to to display social proof. That aside, only indirect approach girls at the gym. Like start a conversation with them based on an observation or something. Leave it at. Then if you see them some other day you can start a casual conversation again. If you've talked to them a couple of times, perhaps three, you could invite them to some activity you were going to do anyway. That gives off low pressure vibes, which is more comfortable to the other person. I disagree that it's completely not okay to approach girls at the gym. You just have to adapt your approach to what is socially acceptable and doesn't bother the girls all too much.
[–]ryacoo 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Don't feel bad about it and don't let other people's views online put you off.
It's a difficult place to approach - some girls will be absolutely fine with it, others won't but the more experienced you are, the better you'll be at reading those situations.
Start by being indirect, friendly and generally sociable, just say "hey" a few times as you walk by people. Make small talk while you're in the queue waiting to get in, or waiting to use a vending machine or at the water cooler, etc.
They'll see you as the friendly guy who says hello rather than a creepy stranger. Then, over time, see which girls are more receptive/open and continue to build rapport/get more direct from there.
[–]ImAGhostOooooooo 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is great advice!
I mentioned in my comment that he needs to try approaching other people and places where it's more socially acceptable like at the front desk, or water fountain, before and after group classes, or even if there's a smoking area (if you smoke, that's where I met my best friend)

Just leave them alone, going out of your way to bring it up again would probably make it worse. If they come talk to you, then you should talk to them.
[–]KeyGrapefruit1777 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Don’t sweat it!!! Learn from it and move on. As a much older woman, who goes to the gym everyday, just smile and say hi and keep moving. Should you not acknowledge them will make you look immature and bitter. Show no hard feelings. I had a few guys approach me and one was so aggressive it was beyond awkward. When I told him I was married, he just continued to make creepy rude comments. Telling me I might catch him looking at my ass. That’s a creep. You tried to shoot your shot, it didn’t work. That’s it! A smile and good morning or good afternoon.

Nothing to feel bad about. I find it ridiculous that society has gotten to the point where it's considered long to speak with another person. Don't listen to a woman about how to approach girls, or, about where to approach girl. They never did it, did they? At the best, she can only tell you what SHE thinks is okay or not.
And, don't just start apologizing after someone's opinion on something. You did what you felt like the best at that moment. you did not cause any harm to anyone. You just didn't win this time.
Now move on, next !

Cold approach at the gym is only valid if you have a solid physique and you are also attractive .
Tô increase your odds you must make friends with the most amount of people there possible first so now you have social proof and you are not just some random guy .
It’s specially good if you make friends with the staff , the cleaning lady or guy , the guy in the front . If everyone there loves you and they see that they gonna be more willing to go out with you
[–]Kenn_p 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Speaking from personal experience it depends how you do it. I go to a college rec center so that’s probably why it could be different in approaching. My only advice is only approach them if they’re in the midst of packing up their belongings or just getting there. Don’t interrupt during their workout because that’s when it’s considered rude or creepy. Not everyone will respond the same and truth be told some women won’t mind it and some will be bothered by it.

The fact you wrote what you did and posted it here. Is you knowing it’s wrong. Kinda not caring its wrong because you want affirmation to do it again.
If you’re train of thought is “engaging with women minding their own business. I know it’s bad but I did it anyways. ” as your only source with engaging with women. You’re desperate.
This sub treats talking to women as some mountain to climb. This is advice on how to do so not a place for incels to get encouraged to harass women while they’re working out at the gym.
It’s always weird and creepy to them unless they came up to you.
Or some event happened that sparked a conversation.
You could be at a gym and someone might be struggling with equipment. “Can I help you or do you have someone I can grab for you”
Someone’s using a piece you’re ready for “hey let me know when you’re done with that. Gotta get my reps in”
This won’t always lead to a conversation. But it’s a 100000000x better than walking up unprovoked and hitting on them.
Your brain and instincts were warning you and you ignored them because you’re so desperate. Just chill. They’re humans.

I am a woman and will give you my perspective on how I feel about being approached at a gym.
I don't like it at all. I go to the gym to be by myself and work on my fitness/mental health. I'm wearing skin tight clothing, sweating, alone, and can always see guys staring. There's always a guy who feels the need to come up to me and critique my form or machine use (I've been going to gyms since I was 16 years old. I was a competitive cheerleader and swimmer in high school. My dad used to be a gym buff and my mom is a professional body builder. Me being a woman doesn't mean I don't know how to use these machines. If you're worried about my technique go grab a staff member).
It makes me extremely uncomfortable knowing that a guy was staring at me for so long that they wanted to come up to me and approach me while I'm working out by myself. Just because someone finds me attractive does not mean they need to come up to me at a time where I want to be alone and focus on my workout. I'm not there to impress guys, I'm not wearing cute outfits to impress guys, I'm there because I want to stay in shape and relieve some stress. I wear cute outfits because I like the way i look in them and they're easy to move in, not because I'm looking for attention.
This is why I don't like using certain machines or doing squats around men, because a majority will stare. Sometimes I get some weights and use a multipurpose room by myself so I can relax and focus without being oogled at.
But lately I've been thinking that it was more important I was honest with myself and tried talking to them instead of regretting never doing so.
What you want should never be more important than someone else's comfort. If multiple women have expressed to you that this isn't a good idea, you need to keep that in mind.
Will I get kicked out of the gym or something?
Not a guarantee but a real possibility in the future if you keep at it consistently. A lot of gyms have anti-harrassmsnt policies in place for this reason. There was a gym that I went to that specifically had a policy that said "if you're not friends with another gym goer, and you're not staff, then please don't approach other customers unless it's an emergency safety concern". It also said if there was an emergency, you needed to get a staff member immediately, and you weren't allowed to falsify a safety concern in order to talk to somebody. There were some bullet points that explained acceptable approachable behavior ie. Looking for a spotter, asking for weights, asking to use a machine etc. But the policy specifically stated that you weren't supposed to use the gym as a social cocktail hour unless you're doing group activities like Zumba or Spin because those are meant to be social. Anyone who broke those rules multiple times had their memberships revoked. There were also cameras throughout the gym and it made me feel very comfortable working out there knowing that everyone's behavior was monitored. It's just sad that a policy like this had to be a thing in the first place.
Another was smiling but told me she was 16.
If you're over the age of 18 then approaching women in a public setting can be really tricky. Always be sure to get their age as soon as possible, especially before exchanging numbers.
With all that being said, there are some ways to approach women without being "that guy".
If they have ear buds in, don't bother
Try at the water fountain or front desk
Don't beeline towards someone like you're waiting for them or searching for them
I met my best friend in the world at the gym, but he approached me outside at the smoke pit. We both commented how we were eyeing each other and decided to become gym buddies (romance didn't work out but like I said we are still best friends!)
Eye contact can be VERY misleading. Some people get a 1,000 yd stare for focus, some people will stare back if you're staring at them in the hopes to say (I see you staring, please stop), sometimes eye contact is just brief moments where your eyes meet and that's it lol. What you need to look for is a body scan (looking you up and down and smiling while maintaining some eye contact or consistently watching you workout while smiling). I tend to people watch when I workout because there's nowhere else to look if there's no TV or the TV is out of view.
Join some classes and chat then up before or after while putting away equipment
I would avoid saying "I saw you and thought you were cute" it sounds like you're only interested in her body since she's probably wearing tight clothing and it can come off pervy.
This might not be the best advice for everyone, a lot of gyms have different policies and some women are more open to being approached while working out, but this is just what I think is appropriate. The gym is kind of a private place in my eyes, I'm going there for myself I'm not going there to socialize with other people. Even if I went to the gym with friends we really wouldn't be talking that much because we're focusing on the workouts.
I hope this helps even if some of it isn't directly related to your situation. If anything just use it as some thoughts to keep in mind When approaching women at the gym.

I never read such an eloquent, well-worded, and well-intentioned comment with mostly fluff.
"I don't like mushroom soup" -> "3.5 billion women must be disgusted by any kind of soup" is the same kind of deduction that the parent commenter made.
OP, only thing you can take from the parent comment is just don't stare at the girls in the gym. That IS creepy. You want something, just ask about it (a girl in this discussion). If The answer is no, then just move on.
[–]ImAGhostOooooooo -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]ImAGhostOooooooo 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I usually like doing squats with weights instead of using the machine so I can focus on the movements of my knees, hips, and back because I'm trying to strengthen those areas. But unfortunately I can't do those exercises without guys literally stopping to stare to watch the entire time.
I'm not wearing cute outfits to impress guys,
THIS! why do so many men fail to comprehend this?!? It's summertime and I love wearing cute outfits in summer, like crop tops, mini skirts, gladiator sandals, etc. but there is ALWAYS gonna be that one guy who starts acting creepy and thirsty and behaves as if he's never seen a pair of legs before...a lot of men genuinely feel like we wear cute things SOLELY for them...I love going for walks and taking the train by myself, but I feel like I can't do these things as often as I would like because of the constant harassment from strange men when I'm just trying to mind my business...
Same!
Plus when you think about women summer clothes they're always a little bit more revealing, it's hard to find something cute that isn't as revealing. But like we wear these things because they make us feel good, we like how we look in them. We're not wearing these things because we're looking for someone to tell us how they think we look.
[–]SpartacusLaw -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link
Maybe wear more clothes if you don't want to be bothered or more notably even looked at. I know, we live in a time where no one takes personal responsibility, its a do what I want and expect everyone to respect that, I can wear my panties in the gym and no one should even look at me, ok, whatever.

[–]SpartacusLaw -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
You said you're wearing skin tight clothing and get upset if someone looks at you. Don't wear skin tight clothing if you're bothered by others looking.
[–]ImAGhostOooooooo 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
You do realize a majority of women's workout attire is skin tight right? It's better to have clothing that's tight and flexible so you can do your movements easier. It's not good to wear baggy clothes if your weight lifting or doing yoga. And how about people keep their eyes to themselves if we're in a public setting? Just because I'm wearing something skin tight doesn't mean you have to sit there and stare at me the entire time I'm in the gym. Taking a glance is one thing but I've literally had people stare at me while I'm at the gym.
[–]SpartacusLaw 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
If you don't want to be looked at, don't dress in a way that attracts attention, it's simple. If I go out wearing a diaper, I assume the risk that I will be laughed at and stared at. I can't say, or I shouldn't say, I'm wearing my diaper, don't look at me or laugh.
[–]ImAGhostOooooooo 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If I go to the gym wearing gym attire then how is that me subjecting myself to being stared at? I am just a normal human trying to enjoy my workout. Some people need to learn that it's not polite to stare. You can't blame me for wearing something comfortable to the gym, that's literally the definition of victim blaming
[–]SpartacusLaw -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You're not wearing something comfortable, you're purposely dressing in a provactive manner and then complain about garnering attention. It's the equivalent of eating McDonald's every day and complaining that you're fat.

I'm just going to assume you're trolling. Bye

This is why I (27F) don't go to the gym

No it's not. Be honest, it's because you're lazy lol

The gym is one of those places you can't really just hit on chicks. If anything you'd have to approach with a just friends mindset, build rapport over multiple visits in brief conversation and only ask for like a coffee date or something much later... And that's if she's even receptive, a lot won't be.
[–]ahkivah 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It’s extremely creepy for you to approach these girls are the gym. And one was 16? What the fuck? You can’t tell one of them was a child?
[–]freel0der 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Its fucking impossible to tell these days.
[–]throwawaysedd10 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I thought she was in her 20s before I talked to her. If it really is creepy to approach girls at the gym, I'll just stop then.
Them striking you down is them being creeped out. Take the hint.
[–]caitikitty7 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Leave us alone. The only reason we say yes and flake later or act nice about it is because men don’t take straight rejection well.
[–]Lopsided_Jackfruit37 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Don't approach women at the gym. The only "possible" exception would be if you two happened to be leaving together at the same time and you make small-talk that's not creepy (number-asking).
For example:
-You and "Hottie" are both leaving the gym at the same time. Say something like, "That workout felt great..and then insert some small talk about the weather, what you're going to eat, etc." and see if she responds with an opening. If she doesn't, just be like "Alright, see ya around" in a cool tone.
DO NOT approach her when she first arrives. When she is in-between sets. When she is doing a set. When she is on cardio. When she is getting a drink, etc. The only somewhat acceptable time is AFTER a workout when she is outside of the door.

Women go to the gym to receive attentions and validation

Unless you have a “reason”, leave it alone. Otherwise you are in AFC country.
[–]dani098 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Over the years I have dated several work man in the gym and friends with a handful. I have to disagree when you say “ I won’t bother”
Approaching becomes a lot easier, and feels way less creepy, when you stop viewing it as something you go out to do, and rather something you just do naturally when the opportunity comes up. I rarely leave a daygame “sarge” season feeling good about myself, whereas I always feel great when I shoot my shot with a girl I encountered on the course of my day. So, go to the gym to exercise, and take opportunities as they somewhat naturally arise. If you go there with the idea of approaching girls in mind, you’ll probably feel creepy and come across poorly.

Move a bit slower. Gain knowledge of common ground.See if she makes a positive gesture. Don’t try the drink pickup line. To invasive. Small talk can show interest also.

I think it is less the place and more so the social cues. Like it would be better to talk to a girl when she is coming or going or on a water break or cleaning something up rather than actually working out or in a set. Also, if the woman just seems to be avoiding everyone, then she probably just wants to be left alone, but most girls will not be annoyed if you ask them and are appropriate with it.
