Hi all, wanted to hear your perspective on this. I'm pretty confident with conversation on first dates, but I absolutely suck at breaking the touch barrier. It's like I have some kind of psychological block where I feel like I can't invade their personal space, in case they won't like it. Best case scenario I'll go for the kiss at the end of the date, but that's often too late.

Most recent first date: we sat at a booth in the bar, the conversation flowed smoothly and she started scooting closer and smiling, occasionally touching my arm. I knew at this point she was interested. But I still had this strong feeling "you can't assume anything" and I kept my distance. The most I could manage was awkwardly touching her shoulder to emphasize a point. I couldn't imagine doing something bold like sliding over and putting my arm around her, it felt like it would be so presumptuous and creepy.

So we kept talking like this, I kept the conversation fun and playful, but then at about the hour mark she started yawning and checking the time, and the conversation started falling flat. It was clear to me the opportunity had passed, but I still asked if she wanted to go to another bar to play pool. She said no, and we parted ways.

Most of my dates go this same way, and I understand what I'm doing wrong. But I haven't been able to get past this feeling of it being "wrong" to assume I can get in their space. I grew up homeschooled with no social life, and only became social as an adult, so I'm guessing that's the root of the problem. Looking for any advice on how to improve on this!

EDIT: just to clarify, I mean I want to become comfortable with casual, non-sexual touching like an arm around the shoulders etc. Not looking to grope anyone lol
