And while we're on the topic, I try to avoid starting sentences with the word "so" because it can sound presumptuous and labored. Picture yourself standing next to someone and you're a little nervous thinking of something to say. You chime in with "So. You are into pottery?" That sounds like small talk...and like you two are stuck together and there's a gun to your heads. No thanks. Furthermore, I try not to break conversation with questions at all. "You mentioned earlier that you were into pottery. I tried it once when I was very young. It's challenging but seems like it would be a very rewarding skill. Is that something you are passionate about?" sounds like you actually give a shit and can discuss the subject.

I love using this tactic. Women don't even care if it seems to come from nowhere. Saturday I felt the conversation dying down so I just asked this girl from work, "so who's your favorite Star Trek captain." She took it from there. Stuff like this is very easy to do.

BTW her answer was, 'Obviously Picard, then Sisko, Kirk, and Janeway.' Girl knows her shit.

I find that being quiet can actually work out for me quite well if I am actually curious about the girl I'm talking to. A lot of girls will be all too happy if you let them drone on about themselves all night, the trick is to find interesting things about them to make them talk about (which you do by actually paying attention to the things they're saying)! It's kind of a win-win when you meet someone who will fill the silence with bullshit that you can just filter out and respond to as you like; it's entertaining yourself and them. Then again, I'm not a naturally talkative person, others might have more comfortable modes of conversation.

For this reason I would recommend using askreddit questions sparingly. Definitely good to use them if the conversation has taken a turn for the uninteresting, but don't change the subject too often/drastically or questions start to feel like an interview, instead of just a way to entertain yourself/find out interesting shit about other people. Just letting her talk about herself is giving her value already.

This seems to contradict the "Don't interview" rule. I mean, it's ok every once in a while, but if your conversation consists of nothing but you asking her questions, you're sunk. That's where I tend to land. I've asked her three questions in a row, and now we're both staring around the room. Time to eject.

I think a useful way to rephrase this might be "A friend of mine asked me this funny question the other day. (Tell her the question.) I think ... (tell her a short version of your answer) What would you answer?" Then if she gives a really short answer you could talk about her answer or go into more detail about your own answer, or compare and contrast.

This is the great benefit of having a few rehearsed conversation pieces. Asking boring, uninteresting questions will turn her off quicker than you can imagine. Try thinking up a couple interesting things before hand.
