Why strangers as the chosen demographic?

why a stranger when most rapists aren't and not by a small margin? I mean obviously there are a variety of reasons but I never really saw much discussion or address of this fact when it was a big thing.

There is only one reason. The reason more women are assaulted by acquaintances is because of frequency and proximity. A woman spends 12+ of each day with her partner, and they share life’s stressors. Arguments over childcare. Sex. Money. Sometimes substance abuse is involved.

That’s the sole reason that strangers are less likely to rape a woman, because the guy who approached her at the bus stop was in her face for three minutes in a public space. The other guy has a magnitude more options to cause harm.

And strangers are unpredictable and men and women who approach a lone person are wildly unpredictable.

For what it's worth, when considering this question I didn't inherently think of strangers. Just that he's a random.

Believe me, there's enough men in my life and past who were abusive, shit monsters that even if the question had specified "a man you knew from childhood" or "a man related to you" I would have ABSOLUTELY chosen the bear.

Because no woman wants to consider that the men she trusts with her life would do something unthinkable to her. Strangers are the unknown variable and you meet a lot in your day to day life, so it’s easy to think that any number of them might be looking for an opportunity to harm you.

It's not just "a stranger," but a stranger in a location where it is unlikely that the stranger will be caught or stopped if something goes wrong. The implicit question is not one of stranger danger, but "how many men do you think would engage in x if given the opportunity to do so without the expectation of consequences."

Probably because it's the one that you cannot "vet out". People choose who they date and they can observe for red flags, check whether this person is in the sex offenders list etc. But we cannot vet out or completely avoid strangers.

I'd also argue that acquaintances are quite often closer to a "strangers" group than people you know well as well. A person working in a store close to your home is an acquaintance, but they aren't someone you'd vouch for or someone you can vet out.

The man v bear debate was about a stranger vs a bear in the woods

To be fair it was a strange bear in the woods as well. So stranger vs stranger, just comparing and contrasting their species. If you wanted to make the same comparison with friends/family you’d have to assume some familiarity with the bear, which seems pretty silly if you ask me.

Most women get abused by someone they trusted yes.

The problem is that by definition they were trusted

I trust my dad. I trust my brothers. I trust my uncle. I trust my husband. I trust my friends.

By definition that means I expect all of them to be good people. So I am not wary of them.

Unless your opinion is "never trust men", then this will always be applicable to strangers.

Look at it this way:

Most women are raped/beaten by men they know.So my potential rapist is in my social circle.

But a strange woman has her own potential rapist who is in her social circle.

Neither the woman, nor her potential rapist are in my social circle, but a rapist will act like a rapist regardless.

The difference is proximity. The woods brought the strange woman's rapist in my proximity.

The man v bear debate was about a stranger vs a bear in the woods which was used to raise into the public discourse that rape is still a prevalent issue.

More specifically, it was used to raise the public discourse that most men and women agree that men are a threat to women- women if asked about themselves and men if asked about their daughters/wives. It wasn't just about rape, that was just a common reason the women brought up.
