Dear god I hope that you never become a father. Do you want your child to get bullied at school? Because this is how kids get bullied.

Why would you automatically give your son a hard time before he's ever able to fully function in society? Please know that children aren't toys that you can throw into the corner once you're bored with them. They are human beings. They become adults one day and have to live with the name that you gave them out in the real world.

I could see the argument for more gender neutral names where then your kid could use either a more masculine or feminine nickname when they get older and feel stronger in their gender identity. But I don’t understand the argument for just giving them very specifically feminine names, how is that pushing gender less than giving them a specifically masculine name?

Also, if you do actually have children please keep in mind that they’re the ones who actually have to go through life dealing with the name you chose for them. So their names aren’t a great time for you to make a personal statement about yourself.

There’s nothing wrong with gender-neutral names like Taylor for example. But for the love of God, please don’t give your kid a name that will make their life harder than it needs to be because you wanted to get creative. This goes for all sorts of r/tragedeigh names, not just “opposite gender” names. If you can’t picture a CEO with the name you’re about to give your kid, don’t do it. Because it’s THEIR name, not yours, and it’s your responsibility to choose something that won’t be a thorn in their side.

Father of (soon) two here: The purpose of parents is to raise functional adults. A good parent does everything humanly possible to make the future adult life of the offspring easier, not harder.

Choosing a feminine name for a son (or a masculine name for a daughter) is a terrible idea right from the get go. Just like choosing a diminutive name for the child - which is an even more common sin of parents that has negative consequences later on.

Your child will be a child for 15-ish years. After that, (s)he will be an adult for many decades. He won't be little Jimmy anymore. And naming him legally Little Jimmy or, even worse, Little Cassie, is an active harm against him.

Sh!t like this make me appreciate Icelandic law even more. In Iceland there's a strict law on what names you can give to your child(ren). Sounds silly but it definitely prevents a lot of harm that so many parents inflict upon their children when they don't realize that their new little bundle of joy will have to be a functional adult for a lot longer than a cute little human to be cuddled in their family.

It’s ok for girls to pretend or act or even have male names, because being male is great and is the standard. Girls going to their default feminine names/mannerisms is also fine because their female.

Boys however doing/acting/having girly names is wrong because as a male, they are derogatorily themselves by acting female because females are lesser than men.

Ha! in my language you can make a male name female (and vice versa) by changing the end. Laurynas - male, Lauryna - female. Laima - female, Laimis - male. Gendered language advantage.

Though the disadvantage of gendered language is that there are no gender neutral stuff and thus the male form tends to be seen as a default. We have a male "they" - jis and an female "they" - ji. Heck, even our adjectives are genderd and depend on the gender of the noun.

You have any idea how that is going to seriously fuck up a boy's life growing up? Here's some news for you. Boys are separate human beings from you. We are not fucking dogs that you can name and keep around like living toys for your social posturing.

Responsible parents do not try to figure out why a stigma exists - they do everything in their power to protect their children from it! Why in the hell would you ever do something that you know is going to socially burden your own child? Just because you think it's cute?

I think that this is a noble ideal. I agree that there's nothing wrong with a boy having a soft and beautiful first name.

BUT we live in reality. While I like the idea of boys being able to have traditionally female names, putting this into practice would make your son's life a living hell. We're not at a point yet where doing this would have no effect on how he's treated.

This reminds me of an old reddit post where a parent made their son go to school in a dress and couldn't understand why he was getting bullied so much
