So I'm watching TV with my daughter (teenager) and for seemingly the one millionth time the plot revolves around some guy beating up his wife. Only this time we got a double dose as the boyfriend was beating his girlfriend.

My daughter and I have a great relationship. She even tells her friends what a great dad I am (and yes I'm all that)! But, in the middle of the show she turns to me and says "Dad if you ever do that to mommy or me (blah) (blah) (blah)..." I didn't even comprehend what else she said. My heart sank. In her eyes I'm a man and thus capable of beating her. Am I wrong? I'm ill. If her mother hadn't pushed me around the house a couple times maybe I wouldn't be so ill.

EDIT: To be perfectly clear, her mother has been the only abuser in our household, not that my daughter has seen that. The irony of her comment against the backdrop of what has happened in her own house is breathtaking.

We weren't watching Lifetime. Woman good, man bad is simply everywhere in media and a much stronger foe than I realized. I WILL NOT turn off my television or screen what she's watching. I watch what she watches and we talk about it all the time. We have talked about DV before. I have presented it in a gender neutral way, but my viewpoint is not reenforced by what she's seeing on TV.

BTW I realized later that we had heard an ad on the radio for a local DV shelter FOR WOMEN just a couple hours earlier. I really think that contributed.

I have talked to her about this briefly and will continue to do so as opportunities present themselves. I appreciate the suggestions.
