They pointed out that the guy wasn't paid for "lost wages", it's just for years the person was wrongfully convicted. It was also pointed out that if she won then this would open up the doors for every person to get sued for their compensation (that should instead be going towards getting the person back on their feet and figuring out how to live in society again).

I know there’s a real and different answer posted, but if I were trying to get that money I’d sue on the grounds that the money was awarded due to events that happened while they were married. At the very least, I’d be asking for 50%, divided by 24 years imprisonment, multiplied by number of years between lock-up and divorce, but would obviously be arguing for more bc why not.

Probably not. Most states the top paid person is in the $200k range, excluding state college football coaches. The victim here got $250k/yr. Consider inflation over that period and he made bank. The state also provided room and board for the whole duration.
Don't get me wrong, it was not worth it. And that guy is still fucked even with the money. You know he's going to pay taxes on it, and it's going to trigger they lottery winner effects. Along with a bunch of other stuff, and my money is in him being homeless in 3 years.

The problem with the US healthcare system isn't that it's private. It's not. Its a terrible mix of state regulations and artificial limits, adding to the fact that insurance is sold to employers, so the actual customer (you) never really gets any choice, never sees the costs, and can't really shop around even for the non-emergency issues.

Scandinavian countries operate with mixed-model market capitalism. There are "socialist" traits but that's the strongest word I'd use.

I have free healthcare and I even get money back on tax returns. I don't have to pay anyone to do my taxes for me, as the government simply sends me a Bill. And the health insurance you guys have to pay pushes your bills over half your income.
As a kid I used to look up to America. I always wanted to go there and I saw it as this great and powerful nation. Right now my views couldn't be more opposite. It's tough. I used to be a right wing libertarian and I eventually came to the conclusion that libertarianism inevitably eats itself. I get where you’re coming from but that is an extreme view, the ideal behind it is to have everybody contribute to society in the best way they can and remove the need for centralised control by an absolute authority, unfortunately it’s just not realistic because without some kind of authority very quickly peoples views clash and cause problems, and then you have people that expect others to contribute more and those who naturally rally others behind them. It’s a giant circle. What you’d want is to empower those individuals who usually go unheard or have differing ideas so as to allow to them to contribute but also allow everyone to make a contribution.

Private prisons in the United States incarcerated 115,428 people in 2019, representing 8% of the total state and federal prison population.
I know private prison bad and everything, but most prisons are already government run, and deprivatizing prisons is not the fix to the justice system reddit seems to think it is.
Mass incarceration over petty charges, improper care of prisoners, and lack of support for programs to reform and reintegrate those imprisoned are some changes that actually need to happen, and it's not private prisons that are stopping those things from being fixed.
The reality is that many people like to talk about big institutional changes, but don't actually give a shit about what happens to the people.

I'm saying that on reddit there is a trend of pretending that private prisons are much more prevalent that they nearly are, and pretending like deprivatizing them would fix so many issues.
I'm saying that is just a small part of the picture, and that more effective prison audits, fixing the courts that, and more effective reintegration programs, especially for nonviolent felons who have a very hard time after their incarceration, are what we should spend more time talking about.
I'm saying thatI don't think that people are actually talking about running them better so its not just a huge money grab. I think that most redditors don't care about helping inmates, they just don't like privatized prisons for entirely different reason and pretend that they care, and I find that to be pretty hypocritical.

Kinda depends how old you are. If you're 25 you've got likely 20+ years to enjoy the money after you're released. If you're 50, you'll be lucky to get out of prison alive.
Also depends on what kind of prison....go learn about Damien Echols almost 20 years on death row. He got out, but has many nasty health problems including vision, dental, digestive, neurological still plaguing him today.

It's the entirety of your young years, there's no guarantee you'd survive (the odds being significantly worse if your false charge is hurting/raping women or children), most likely some (all If you're unlucky) of your friends and family will die hating you, and some that remain may not accept that the charges were false..
