Here is my post from this morning in r/relationships :

> *EDIT: I just want to reiterate that, it’s not just video games, which is the issue right now, and people are discussing, but we’ve literally had the same fight over me working in the basement (finishing it) or washing my car.

(Previous post for context: https://www.reddit.com/r/relationships/comments/v0n5wy/my_29m_wife_28f_wants_to_be_asleep_by_10pm_this/)

My wife has a problem with me doing things for myself. At night, after all the chores are done, and the baby is in bed, I would like to take the time and play video games for an hour and fifteen minutes, to an hour and a half. This gets me in trouble. My wife gets so angry at me for wanting to play video games (something we used to do together, and something she knows I enjoy) that she cold shoulders me, scolds me, ices me out, and makes me pay for it by putting me “in the dog house” for hours, or days at a time.

We own our own business. I was blessed enough to inherit it at a place where I only have to be there 8-6 Monday through Friday. I am able to have weekends off. I am the sole earner of over 3 digits for our family of three. She used to work as a paralegal before the birth of our daughter 16 months ago. Just before our daughter arrived, give or take 90 days, her work returned to the office after COVID lockdowns ended in our area. Rather than send her back very pregnant. I told her to just go ahead and quit. She has been a stay at home mother ever since then.

I work so very hard to give her and my daughter the world. I love them to their core. Through all of that though, since our daughters birth, we have split the child rearing tasks as evenly as possible. Every morning before work, I get the baby up and dressed while my wife sleeps. When she was a new born, I woke up in the middle of the night to assist feedings. I change diapers, I cook, I clean on the weekends, I put gas in our cars, I do handyman work at home, I feed the baby when I get home from work, I bathe the baby and do her night time routine every. Single. Night.

After her night routine is done at 7:30, I hand her off to my wife who puts her to bed. This is how my daughter likes it so my wife has always “got her down.” She’s always been a good sleeping baby so it’s rarely been an issue to do. Post handing my daughter to my wife to put down, I head down to my computer. I play games with my friends (from high school, have been friends and talk daily since 2007, they were my groomsmen.) I play until 8:30 or 8:45, sometimes running over to 9 if I’m having a good time unwinding from the day. After that I want to sit down with my wife and enjoy whatever shows we’re watching. However, the last 2 weeks she has iced me out, and really has become rude and unreasonable when I join her in the living room.

We’ve had fights about my hobbies taking too much “time.” It’s not been just video games. It’s anything I want to do for myself. Be it tinkering with my tools, washing my car, organizing my things or files, whatever. If it’s not sanctioned by her I get punished. Before our child was born this wasn’t a problem. I found time to do the things I wanted and she found time for herself, because we had more hours of the day accessible to us. Now we don’t. The only time I have to do the things I want to do, are from 5-7 am, or from 7:30pm until we go to bed. Which is STRICTLY at 10 pm because my wife forces this.

She has an auto immune disease called Hashimoto Disease. I came here last time and got lambasted over complaining that she wanted to go to bed early and we were getting no time together. I still feel that way, but I’ve stopped trying to get her to stay up any later with me.

So now that I have decided in the last month or two that I’d like to also play an hour or so of a video game before bed, in the tiny time window I have, while also making room to spend time with my wife, well, it’s as if we’re inches from divorce. I swear, I find it funny almost. I’ve been in tears telling her that I feel like she’s over reacting, and she’s cried telling me that I’m making her feel like I don’t care about her. It’s funny too, because she will get upset at me over this at night, and rather than just get over it and enjoy the time we have with one another once I’m done, she proceeds to get angry, and act irate with me, which therefore really ruins our night together and some of the following day as well.

Idk what to do anymore. I’m civil about this, and I’ve told her, it seems like the only way for this to not be a problem between us, is for me to just live the rest of my life being totally unhappy, and just simply hide it and bury the fact that I’m actually not doing anything for myself. Like I said. Right now it’s video games, before it was wood working, before that it was painting.*

Basically, I want some time to myself, in this context it's playing Warzone, in the past it's been washing my car, or finishing out our basement. Basically, any allocation of time for hobbies/interests, that I could otherwise spend with my wife is me "not being a family man." or "Showing my her that I'd rather be doing something else." I love my wife, she's awesome, but she's making me feel like it's my happiness or hers. We've been fighting last night and this morning and I feel like shit. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem? How did you handle it? Is it just one of the many crosses a man bears? Am I the asshole? Help me out here.
