We aren’t pure slaves to our drive to have sex and reproduce. Pro-social behaviours are also critical to select for now that we live in society.

Taking your post to its logical conclusion, if men based everything on acquiring sex and partners than every man should seek to murder any other man they come in contact with and rape every woman they come in contact with. This obviously isn’t what men do.

It is less about individual survivability and more about group survivability.

We want the best of us to make the best use of their talent to allow the group/society to thrive.

Imagine the opposite : a world in which we would actively crush anyone and everyone that would display any ounce of greatness. It is easy to see why.

Some of men following other men is for emulation, self-improvement purposes. Other times it's living vicariously through them, like the ex-athlete who had an injury in high school who thinks that he could have gone professional but now follows his favorite athlete, instead.

If it's a closer friend, then I think that there are some studies that say that associating oneself with someone successful makes one also more likely to be sexually successful, too. So the idea that men make themselves less successful by propping up more successful men might not be accurate. What is more likely to make men less successful is disassociating themselves from other men altogether.

Why must it be evolutionary biology? I would argue it's largely social. Men prop up other men because that's what our social system has been built on, men keeping power and respect contained between each other.

Because members of the community benefit from people being good at things- hunting, foraging, navigation, medicine, building shelter, making clothes.

It’s not about propping up individuals. It’s about setting standards for success and honoring those standards. This allows for known goals that men know if they achieve them they’ll be rewarded.

Recognizing and praising talent is part of a social contract, where if you yourself become talented and special you can also expect praise.

Having a fit and muscular body, or absolutely shredding on an instrument is praiseworthy. and men honor that contract because they know that if they put in the hours in the gym or practicing in the studio their efforts should too be rewarded with praise.

Society doesn’t intentionally do this on purpose tho. Their increased money and status is a byproduct of there immense genetic value (which society usually harnesses to make money or provide entertainment)

If you’re asking why they specifically get so much money thrown at them, it’s cause entertainment is one of the world’s biggest industries as a whole. (Which makes sense because for a lot of people, it’s the only thing the makes life feel “fun”)

Also I’m pretty sure most men subconsciously realize that there’s nothing they can really do to compete with these genetically elite men anyways. Your problem seems to be that you think you’re in some competition with these men, but unless you are a one-in-a-million talent yourself, the competition was over at birth. These men are in their own class, and even if they had zero status they’d still be much better off with women than the average guy. So their status compared to yours is largely irrelevant anyways.

Helping up/teaching people is also a naturally masculine thing
Once you reach a certain level helping people isn't going to negatively impact you

From what I see men usually try to put other men down by insulting their height, penis size, etc, so they can feel better about themselves.

They might be comfortable worshipping celebrities, probably because they don't really come across many celebrities in their regular life and don't feel like they are a threat since they are so rare.

Competitive men compete. Evolution would favor killing competitors. We’re civilized now so we may congratulate an opponent and not hate them because resources aren’t on the line like in barbaric times.

Competition is a lot more scientific now anyway.

We learn a lot by imitation. To do that we need proximity.

Also there's proximity association which is beneficial.

The natural urge for this doesn't play out the same way because of tech that allows everyone to observe people across the planet and not just those they are in actual physical proximity to, but the urge is still there.

They represent the top of something, something we should try to be, you could say that evolutionary speaking they work as a moral boost because we as a men sometimes are forced to fight impossible odds and having Hardvar Slayer of Gods by my side help me to not shake in fear.

Psychologically speaking everyone like a successful person and because those are not peoples of our everyday they can't be target of jealousy.
