It actually won't cause it'll make sure real victims are priority than false accusers that are attention whores.

This is the exact reason why men don't go into teaching jobs, it's just too easy for a girl to accuse a man of sexual assault. I read somewhere about a year back that some mother even encouraged their daughters to falsely accuse male teachers to get them out of the school.

I think the point is that the families were still implying they were telling the truth when they made their statement, "That this would have a chilling effect on reporting school abuse." Either way I hope it does, I hope it shows false accusers they will have to prove their case and when they are found wrong they will be culpable for their dishonesty. I don't see this making young women or men or children who are victims any less likely to report misconduct and to imply such is an absurd grasping for a lifeline that doesn't exist for them.

The above article suggests that the defamation was really caused by the parents in spreading rumors about the allegations and gossiping about it. I think its better if the parents are liable for some of their own actions as opposed solely the actions of their children.

In reality this loss may be covered under their home owners policy. If not, I expect that they would file bankruptcy and have the debt discharged.

EDIT: This is a civil case, so there is no 'minor', per se - the liability falls to the parents.

ANOTHER EDIT: If you were familiar with reddiquette, you shouldn't be voting this down. It prompted a good discussion about this being a civil case, etc. This sub is turning into the hate brigade, just as badly as the very groups we claim to oppose. Go figure.
