Post Primary Teachers' Association president Angela Roberts said literacy played a part in the widening gap between boys and girls and, by year 9, boys were often well behind. "But high schools are pretty good at pulling students up . . . in the first two years, so they're on par by year 11," she said.

This is the bit I find the most interesting. She seems to say primary school is failing boys in terms of literacy, then in High School, they are then able to catch up by year 11.

Could this have anything to do with the vast majority of primary teachers being female and a much more even spread of male and female teachers in high school?

The LSE did a study that showed that teachers (most of whom are female) give their sex better grades for the same standard of work. Throw in a culture that constantly tells boys they are stupid and it's amazing that boys aren't actually doing worse than they already are.

Dr. Paul Baker wrote extensively on this problem here. He says,

Girls can do anything. Is that a sufficient explanation of the dramatic rise of the gender gap in the early 1990's. I've struggled to identify any other obvious factor.

Further to this, the Ministry of Women's Affairs seems to gleefully state that "In education women continue to outperform men."

Summary-

When girls fail/are paid less/ are the majority going into programs that arent STEM programs, its oppression.

When boys fail/dont do well, its their own faults because of their attitude.

Maybe it has more to do with the education environment?

I quit NCEA level 3 last term to go on an exchange trip and I can openly admit that it was my least productive time at school ever, simply because at 17-18 I'm wanting to something other than learn a broad range of mostly uninteresting topics that fail to involve me.

That said at my school boys and girls are probably tied in terms of highest achievers.

Male teacher from the US here. I don't know how it is in other countries, unfortunately. While there's some credibility to changing the education system to meet boys' needs, you don't see what we do. Illiteracy is killing our kids' minds, and many parents don't give a shit if their kid reads or not. It's sports, entertainment, and fun before school and learning every time. I go home some days and feel like I'm watching a society crash one day at a time.

Teach your kids, especially your boys, to love reading, learning and knowledge. Boys are being taught the opposite.

My thoughts: homework sucks. No one wants to do it. Boys or girls. The simple fact is that there are more females than males in the US population, therefore diluting the persentages for girls.
