This is actually good news. The sex offender registry needs to be reformed, and "No problem is ever fixed until it affects women", so now we might finally see some progress on this.

How it hurts the poor wittle women who make up 7% of the list... but fuck how it hurts the 93% majority of men who make up the list, which likely has more than 7% innocence rate where they were falsely accused... but hey, it's all about those poor women.

The sex offender registry is being abused. It should be a way of keeping track of people who actually might pose a danger to others. But it's just being used as additional punishment for some crimes. Like a guy who peed in front of people or a couple that had sex in a public park. I'm not saying those things are ok, but no one is at risk of rape or abduction from a drunk peeing dude or a horny pair of exhibitionists. Putting people like that on the list is just punitive and undermines any possible good that the list would do.

Her photo, home address, charge (as a teacher she had sex with a 16-year-old student), and even her scars and tattoos are listed on the state sheriff's website. Some news reports about her crime also list her address.

There's an oxymoron (is that the right one?) in there. It says it lists her address two times. Furthermore, "she had sex" of course.

The reason for these post-sentence restrictions come under the guise of public safety, but a growing number of critics are disputing the true benefits of what they call "draconian" laws.

It's very easy to come by in life as a woman without ever landing on that registry. It's much harder for men who can be placed on that for crimes they never committed, and which are completely thought up.

I think the list is way too public. I remember being a kid and being able to comb through it and laugh with my friends at all the creepiest dudes and trying to see if we could find at least one attractive girl. It's completely public. Nobody should have their lives put out there like that. I think that it should maybe give very minimal information about an individual and if you want more information you have to submit a formal request including all of your information as well. It's not safe for men or women to be completely public on that list; it exposes them to people far worse that might want to commit murder for instance.

I find the blatant omission of even asking the question of what happens to male offenders (especially those of lighter crimes - forget sexual assault, I understand urinating in public or statutory rape with a one year age difference can get you on the list) as repulsive as anyone here.

But this is also a positive development. This debate can only go so far without the corresponding question for men coming to the fore, in a world that at least has to pretend to be for gender equality.
