Older men can be more attractive, but the vast majority of it is based on money and status. To avoid this, men usually go for flings when older with the shallower ones and settle with a women they're friends with or don't know to much about their status/wealth from the beginning.

i promise you, the only reason i’d ever date an old man is if he’s got money and he’s willing to spend it on me. there’s virtually no other good reason to choose an old man over a man closer to my own age.

i think most young women would agree, considering it’s very uncommon to see people in big age gap relationships in which the woman is college-aged. most of the time, it’s a sugaring/escort situation.

just my anecdotal experience: i’ve never seen a 40 year old man who looked significantly better than the hottest 20-something guys i’ve seen. i’ll let you know if it ever happens.

It's status digging and gold digging. I had friends that had a crush on the professors because of their position and the taboo nature of it.

It’s about “winning.” The men aren’t attractive, it’s the fact that they interact with many people on a day to day basis (many of whom are women). Teachers and service workers in particular do, and the competitive aspect heightens in college since there are definitely people in their age bracket these men interact with. These girls want to be noticed. If any of these men actually approached these women in real life, they’d get rejected. They don’t want the relationship or even a hookup, they want to be the center of attention. Take it from a college student

There might be some exceptions where women genuinely prefer an older aesthetic irrespective of wealth but in most cases wealth will be the driving factor. What you are describing is more of an exception than the rule.

Those men were probably even more attractive in their youth. It’s not like they lust over those men because of their age. That’s like me saying that older women are more attractive because high school boys lust over the hot teacher. More like authority + them being high value to begin with.

Mr Silver Fox may not be “rich”, but he still has access to way more stuff than even Chad college student. Mature dinners at nice restaurants that he’s actually dined at. A nice clean house, instead of a nasty frat room. He knows more about jobs and other adult pursuits and can talk to/teach her about them. He probably has a pretty nice, if not extravagant car, and can take her on some limited vacations

I find that a lot of times female friends who date older guys do so after having had a bad experience with guys their age. Their ex was too immature for them, so they decide to go for guys much older who often have more stable careers, are more experienced, and "know what they want" so to speak.

Yes, there's a certain % of the population (inc me, AMA) who are just attracted to older men.

I don't think the women who are not are very susceptive to it though, as I wouldn't be dating a younger man.

And I think there are more gold diggers anyway, I haven't met many with just a consistent attraction regardless of status and generally I guess I'm just weird.

Well, its complicated, but there is a biological element to it. In nature its easily to get killed, particularly males dies in great numbers. If you are old in nature it proves you are strong, capable and able to provide. You surviving so long must mean that you got something going for you. Its only natural for women to be attracted to older men (and vice versa, pregnancy is hard on the body, so being young is good) . Tough, there is an element of natural "gold digging" there too in that part of the attraction is from the fact that he can provide for her and the child like a younger buck who have yet to prove himself might not.

This is not conscious decisions as much as it simple instinct, hundreds of millions of years of evolution defining the sexual behaviors that is now expressed trough the lens of modern society.
