It's an irregular noun.

I've always hated that particular piece of hypocrisy (male circumcision / female genital mutilation).

[+]FanaticUniversalist -73 points-72 points-71 points 3 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Even if forced circumcision is bad, FGM is far worse.

Removing a finger is worse than removing a finger nail. Both are mutilation.

[–]Grow_peace_in_Bedlam 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Circumcision is a subtype of genital mutilation. You can't say that it's better or worse than genital mutilation in general, which by definition encompasses practices both more and less severe than circumcision.

For instance, clitoral hood cutting, which is supposed to be the main type of FGM in the very abundantly populated Indonesia and Malaysia, is, anatomically speaking, the gender flipped version of male circumcision, and male circumcision certainly isn't less severe than genital pricking, which may or may not leave a permanent wound and is nevertheless classified by WHO as FGM when performed on women and girls.

Saying "Male circumcision isn't as bad as FGM" makes as much sense as saying "Punching men isn't as bad as violence against women."

[–]enjoycarrots 40 points41 points42 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some types of FGM are worse. Some types of ritual circumcision for boys are also worse, in tribal places where that is still practiced. Some types of FGM, that we still call FGM, are not as bad.

One of the problems here is that we (appropriately) lump any cutting of female genitalia under the heading of FGM, regardless of severity. It's not called FGM because it's worse. It's called that because it's mutilation. Ideally we should apply that same standard to forced circumcision.

[–]Fearless-File-3625 25 points26 points27 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most common types of FGM, like pricking the clitoral hood to draw blood, is not any worse than circumcision.

[–]rabel111 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Only sexist pigs could characterise infant genital mutilation as "not that bad".

You are disgusting

[–]helloimderek 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Any type of genital manipulation is bad.

[–]CrowMagpie 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Typo: I think you mean mutilation here.

[–]Mode1961 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not all forms of FGM are worse than all forms of circumcision.

Educate yourself.

"View discussions in 3 other communities"

"This post has been removed from r/ feminism."

edit: it's now gone from r/ science, too.

[–]wumbo-inator 93 points94 points95 points 3 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Why did they remove it from the feminism subreddit? They told me that feminism is about gender equality? That’s so weird.

Ya know, for a movement that’s about gender equality, I sure don’t see much equality in gender

[–]Ok_Night_7767 28 points29 points30 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Feminists want men to keep fighting uselessly for rights that should be inalienable while they forge ahead, working on greater rights for themselves.

Males who have had their genitals mutilated need to start making the person(s) who authorized it (their parents) pay for this crime in any way they can (could be emotional). Until there is a cost or penalty for those making this choice for others, it will never stop. The men who escaped this brutality should also let their opinions be known as widely as possible.

The cultural excuse does not cut it. We have long since abandoned other barbarities from the past. This is one more that should have been purged long ago.

The religious excuse also doesn't hold water. First, because a religion cannot be foisted on anyone living in a country that believes in freedom of religion. The child may opt for another religion or none at all. As well, those who claim authority from some "holy book" need to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that a) their god actually wrote that book (disciples or prophets or whatever would only constitute hearsay evidence), b) that deity is still alive and of the same opinion, c) that the written word was translated perfectly from whatever language it was originally written in; and d) that no one has edited, abbreviated or changed the text in any way over the hundreds or thousands of years of its existence.

[–]Grow_peace_in_Bedlam 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Plus, the Istanbul Convention explicitly says that religion, culture, tradition, and so called honor cannot be accepted as justification for violence against women. Yet concerns about offending Muslims and Jews are continually trotted out as reasons not to ban male circumcision.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

person(s) who authorized it (their parents) pay for this crime in any way they can (could be emotional).

Not just them. Medical providers have seriously dropped the ball in terms of patient care for the pursuit of profit. They must also be held responsible for enacting the child sex abuse.

[–]wumbo-inator 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I feel you man. It is hard to maintain a relationship with your family when they’ve done that to you, and cutting them off is hard too.

I’ve talked to many men about this, and I’d say about 60% of the time, the parents get angry at the son for bringing it up. Not confused. Not shocked. Not sad. They get angry. They then proceed to not listen at all.

I thought it was weird at first. The son who was mutilated... EVEN IF YOU DONT SEE IT THAT WAY.... is deeply hurt by something you did. Wouldn’t that make you shocked instead of angry? Why be angry at someone who is hurting from your actions?

But I think it’s because they rack their brain looking for an excuse, come up empty handed, and become angry as a defense mechanism. They don’t want to face the reality that they raped their baby boy. So they become angry to try and put the son on the defensive.

This is exactly what happened in my personal case.

Out of all the men’s issues that exist, this one seems to be the one that makes men the most nauseous in my personal experience. Men have lived their whole life mutilated and raped without knowing it. Then when they’re older and understand a bit more, they have to either delude themselves and bury the trauma or look at themselves as a victim of genital mutilation. It’s a real hard pill to swallow.

The other part that makes it so terrible is that there’s no “moving on.” You will be hurt every single time you get naked to shower, every time you have sex, every time you have to readjust your dick in your pants because the most sensitive part has lost what is literally supposed to protect it. It’s not like there are only mental problems you have to overcome and then you are healthy. It’s a permanent physical scar that makes sure your mental scars last as long as it does.

[–]Ok_Night_7767 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They get angry. They then proceed to not listen at all.

Were that me, I would then let them listen to the silence of my permanent absence. Yes, cutting them off is hard but battles are won through sacrifice.

They get angry. They then proceed to not listen at all.

Males who have had their genitals mutilated need to start making the person(s) who authorized it (their parents) pay for this crime

I'd rather attack the people (hospitals) who talked them into it. I think it'd do more good in a broader sense, and wouldn't ruin my relationship with my parents.

[–]Ok_Night_7767 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you can get to them, sure but the legal avenue to go after doctors and hospitals seems to be limited if not completely closed for this abuse. The hospitals do have a vested interest in maintaining the practice and won't be affected by the concerns of victims who are not only innocent but legally impotent. They will just continue to keep on, keeping on.

You have to go after the targets that you can reach or give up.

[–]CrowMagpie 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is true. I'd love to be able to open those legal channels, though.

[–]CrowMagpie 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The religious excuse also doesn't hold water.

What really gets to me here is, I'm a Bible-believing Christian; and the Bible - the New Testament, the part we Christians are supposed to believe - clearly states several times that it's wrong.

But people still do it 'because it's Christian'. Liars. Hypocrites.

[–]Darks-Chaos 39 points40 points41 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You’re not allowed to talk about men’s issues (that’s the first rule). They also have weird rules that basically prevent you from disagreeing

[–]ExMuzzy 19 points20 points21 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Men don't face any problems other than toxic masculinity which they themselves are responsible for. You shouldn't expect feminists to fix your problems either, men need to form their own movement. The movement can't be called men's rights though because that implies men don't have rights. Also, you can't criticise the religion that is feminism and you must believe in the higher power that is the patriarchy.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How? They use doctored scientific literature to justify authoritative medical institutions enabling and enacting human rights violations onto children.

Seems pretty fucking related.

The results add to emerging evidence of a ‘male empathy gap’ in public health.

In the UK we have a Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003 which outlaws it completely. No such act exists for male genital mutilation.

[–]phoenician_anarchist 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Don't forget the Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985.

[The 2003 act] only seems to have raised the maximum sentence from 5 to 14 years, and made some very interesting changes to certain language used.

it shall be an offence for any person to excise, infibulate or otherwise mutilate the whole or any part of the labia majora or labia minora or clitoris of another person.

A person is guilty of an offence if he excises, infibulates or otherwise mutilates the whole or any part of a girl’s labia majora, labia minora or clitoris.

Guess which ones the old one, considering all the noise people are making about pronouns and assuming peoples gender these days 🤣🤣

[–]ayroxus94 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes. And it makes no sense why one would be illegal and not the other. 'Religion' is not a viable excuse.

[+]SirIsaacGnuton -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Jews don't think male circumcision at birth is cosmetic. It's part of their religion. That's going to be an interesting fight.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

We don't allow religions to have human sacrifices anymore

Blood rituals on children should also be strictly prohibited. "Culture" and "Mah made up imaginary friend in the sky said so!" are not acceptable excuses to sexually abuse and mutilate a child.

They can die on this hill if they so choose, but their whole religion will indeed die by doing so, so maybe they should grow the fuck up as a community and stop abusing kids.

Catholics, too, but at least they have the decency to be ashamed of what they're doing enough to try hiding it.

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Catholics do not practice circumcision as a ritual in any way, shape, or form. They choose it or not independently of religious reasons. Apparently you know nothing about the debates of the early Christian community on circumcision, Saint Paul decided that it’s not a part of the religion and not necessary for Christians, and that argument was adopted by general consensus of the new Gentile communities, who did not want circumcision. Catholic Europeans generally do not circumcise their infants.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I was referring to Catholic's predilections for child sexual abuse, and their very public instances of trying to hide instances of it.

I was comparing one religion's child sex abuse to another's

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I’m pretty sure that you’re painting with a very broad brush, but you do like to exaggerate things in your very fevered mind.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Said the person who's done nothing but defend the sexual abuse of children.

Have you checked your own temperature? Might want to look into it.

Also of course you think it's a broad brush, you even consider treating mutilating the genitals of a child as sexual abuse as too broad a brush, what kind of narrow brushes do you use, eh dipshit? Probable a single bristle at a time, to avoid painting over those delusions you so fiercely protect from reality.

[–]Grow_peace_in_Bedlam 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, see Article 12(5) of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention):

Parties shall ensure that culture, custom, religion, tradition or so-called “honour” shall not be considered as justification for any acts of violence covered by the scope of this Convention.

In other words, we've already decided as a society that, when it comes to women, it doesn't matter that FGM is "part of [a group's] religion" because women's right to bodily integrity outweighs a cultural group's right to so-called religious freedom. Why can't we apply this standard to men's right to bodily integrity too?

[–]AvailableCandidate89 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

we've already decided as a society that, when it comes to women, it doesn't matter that FGM is "part of [a group's] religion" because women's right to bodily integrity outweighs a cultural group's right to so-called religious freedom

Exactly, all we're really doing is expecting baby boys to have the same societal protections we give to baby girls. Currently that is not the case.

[–]FreeSpeechFFSOK 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

A major issue with the terminology is the fact that with male circumcision we almost always know exactly what we are talking about.....the procedure of removing the foreskin from the penis...nothing more, nothing less.

However there is much wider variety of cutting procedures for the female genitals. It should be that female circumcision is simply removal of the clitoral hood, nothing more and nothing less, since that is the equivalent of the male foreskin. And both can fairly be called specific types of genital mutilation.

Meanwhile, all other procedures should be referred to as genital mutilation to indicate its something else.

But what other MGM is there? Well, there is penile subcision. Its about all I know. But with FGM we have cutting of the labia minora, sewing of the vagina and even potential removal of the clitoris.

So while I don't like the failure to align the terminology, I have to admit, FGM covers a lot more things while with MGM we are usually talking about only one thing....so its not like its just pure gender bias.

[–]duhhhh 36 points37 points38 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Clitoridectomy is awful and much worse than a typical circumcision. Feminists like to count FGM using one definition and then imply all FGM is clitoridectomy for political gain. However, FGM also includes a lot of stuff less bad than infant male circumcision and all FGM is bad, ergo MGM is also bad.

For example clit and labia piercings on sober consenting adults....

Women who have genital piercings will be recorded as having suffered female genital mutilation (FGM) under new NHS rules due to come into force next month.

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/women-with-vaginal-piercings-will-be-recorded-as-suffering-fgm-under-new-nhs-rules-10116464.html?amp

And a year later we hear about the epidemic of FGM perpetrated in the UK ... There has been a huge percentage increase! ... We need more funding! ... Except a couple news sources came out with some raw number details. Kinda sad when the dailymail is one of the few reporting the facts...

in the year to March 2017, only 57 were performed in the UK of which 50, or 87 per cent, were in the category for piercings, and all the women whose ages were known were over 18

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-5434125/amp/Almost-FGM-cases-Britain-legal-piercings.html

And a year later the data manipulation paid off...

Now eight walk-in FGM centres, in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds and five London boroughs, will offer women aged over 18 expert care, NHS England says.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-49677983

Likewise activists in Australia and the UK are pushing to get labiaplasty on adults categorized as FGM.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/aug/26/female-genital-mutilation-is-alive-in-australia-its-just-called-labiaplasty

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens-health/11475276/Designer-vaginas-to-be-made-illegal-Have-MPs-gone-mad.html

To the point the medical community is concerned about being arrested or losing medical licenses over performing cosmetic surgery in the area of the vagina.

https://www.bmj.com/content/367/bmj.l6094

How about we promote stopping all routine genital cosmetic procedures till the patient is 18?

[–]FreeSpeechFFSOK 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Victim complex is a powerful thing and huge numbers of women have it and huge numbers of men let them have it.

[–]wumbo-inator 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But when a baby girl gets her clitoral hold excised, we don’t call it a “hoodectomy.” We call it FGM. Even when it’s specific and clearly not referring to something else, it is still labeled as mutilation

[–]ImNotAPersonAnymore 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually we don’t almost always know what we are talking about.

There’s wide variation in MGM that fall under the umbrella euphemism “circumcision”. For example the frenulum can be removed completely or mostly spared, the gliding mechanism can be partially or fully removed, and the inner mucosa can be partially or fully removed.

A big part of the disagreements over how damaging male circumcision is is due to the wide range of outcomes that all get labeled “circumcision”.

[–]H0td0gL4unch3r 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The women are wonderful effect with every topic in life really gets grindy

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -42 points-41 points-40 points 3 years ago (56 children) | Copy Link

Male circumcision is not at all an equivalent to female version. Don’t try to equate them.

[–]efffffff_u 28 points29 points30 points 3 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

Calling male circumcision genital mutilation does not mean that fgm isn’t bad. Just like saying Black Lives Matter does not mean other lives don’t matter. Two different types of genital mutilation can be bad at the same time.

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -21 points-20 points-19 points 3 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link

Wait. I did not say that FGM is not bad. I said, male circumcision is not equally bad. That’s my point and it’s not even close.

[–]efffffff_u 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Nobody is trying to equate the two. That was something you made up.

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -9 points-8 points-7 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Um, er, ok, look at the title of the OP. I guess plain language is not your forte. I guess using phrases like MGM and FGM are not creating equivalencies. I guess up is down in your world. Get your semicircular canals balanced.

[–]efffffff_u 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The title doesn’t equate them it’s pointing out the bias in calling one form of forced mutilation “circumcision” and the other what it actually is. Fuck off.

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s claiming that there should be no distinction in terms. So I won’t fuck off.

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Okay. Type 4 FGM is not as bad as Type 1 FGM, sooo...I guess labeling Type 4 FGM as "FGM" is also a false equivalence for you, right?

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No, I am saying that “female genital mutilation” is a useful and accurate term for what is done to female infants in some countries, including removal of the clitoral hood or any surgical intervention to close the labia. There is almost no surgery that you can do to a clitoris that removes tissue that is not mutilating in its effects, short of very small biopsy.
I am saying that “circumcision” is an accurate and useful term for what is generally done to male neonates, the removal of the foreskin. Such a maneuver is not “mutilation.” I’m sorry that upsets you. You can be upset if you want.

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Removal of the clitoral hood is very literally a form of circumcision, though. It's FGM too, but that doesn't mean it isn't also "female circumcision" in the literal sense.

Likewise, male circumcision is very literally mutilation. It's the needless destruction of a body part. I'm sorry your cognitive dissonance is too large to overcome these simple realities.

It’s scary how activists create echo chambers of crazy ideas. But one man’s crazy is another man’s religion I suppose, only God knows truth from fiction in the final analysis.

If you understood the issue at all you would know that all men want is to have been given the choice. Performing circumcision at birth is absolutely forced genital mutilation and pretending like it isn’t or saying it’s a victim hood complex is the exact bullshit men are sick and tired of.

Studies don’t agree with that, but you’re welcome to believe that if you want. Circumcised males are quite fully sexually functional. Females who undergo what’s called “female circumcision” are not fully sexually functional.

Better studies that aren't done by malicious liars show the exact opposite.

Circumcised males have been permanently physically and psychologically damaged by the procedure, and it's practice is one of the largest ongoing human rights violations in the world

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I really don’t know why people do it, it’s obviously cultural and aesthetic for most people, and not religious.
I assume, perhaps wrongly, that women are the main drivers of the practice, and that it is for aesthetic reasons. That seems to be something that could change rather quickly in society through changing norms; if most boys are not circumcised, then the minority circumcised will likely feel “odd” or out of place and the practice will diminish. People generally follow the crowd.

[–]IcyImplement3617 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[+]SirIsaacGnuton -8 points-7 points-6 points 3 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

There are some African cultures where the purpose of FGM is to make sex unpleasant. Not less pleasant. Unpleasant. The idea is that women who enjoy sex will have sexual relationships with many men and be harder to control and not make a subservient wife. The FGM in that case could be amputation of the clitoris or sewing the labia shut.

MGM was supposedly a health issue. That has been debunked now.

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -9 points-8 points-7 points 3 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Your first paragraph makes sense.
Your second starts with a tendentious word, “male genital mutilation”. It’s not mutilation, circumcised men have very functional penises, that claim by the anti circumcision crowd is the one that has been “debunked” from centuries of experience. As for the health benefits being “debunked”, both sides of the debate have studies that “debunk” each other. On balance, I’d say that the health benefits, if any, are minor and not a good reason to have a general cultural promotion of circumcision.

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

circumcised men have very functional penises

Define "functional."

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Able to achieve erection and ejaculate and have pleasure in the activity of ejaculating. Circumcised men have done this routinely and consistently for centuries.
Define “mutilation”.

[–]KochiraJin 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You know that by that logic several varieties of FGM don't meet your criteria of mutilation right?

[–]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That’s not true. There is no way to remove the clitoral hood and not affect sexual functioning.

[–]KochiraJin 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Of course, but the same is true of any part of either genitalia. Your argument is based on the degree that sexual functioning is affected. Some types of FGM are as minor as a pinprick. If your standards for MGM were applied to FGM such pinpricks would not qualify.

[–]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Studies of adult males who get circumcised show high rates of acceptance, and very very low rates of change in sexual enjoyment. I’m sorry that fact bothers you. I want it to bother me too, I want to be a victim, I want to be unhappy. I really want all those things. I just can’t do it.

[–]KochiraJin 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And you could get similar results if you studied certain types of FGM. If a literal pinprick qualifies as genital mutilation then cutting some of it off certainly qualifies as well. To put it simply: under the standards of FGM circumcision undeniably qualifies as genital mutilation. Would you also say that the feminists against FGM are just desperate to be a victim?

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Congrats, you just justified several forms of FGM as well.

Mutilation: destruction of part of the body. In the case of male circumcision, the foreskin (and usually associated structures like the frenulum) are destroyed.

[+]SirIsaacGnuton 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I use the term MGM advisedly because MRAs have chosen it and there is an argument for it. The practice of removing a functional body part which enhances the senses for no reason could be called mutilation. Yes, the penis still functions, but the sensitivity and therefore the pleasure is reduced. The foreskin is analogous to the clitoral hood and we know that the hood has a great bearing on the sensations felt in the clitoris.

I agree with your conclusions about the studies. The WHO only recommends circumcision in areas where heterosexually transmitted AIDS is prevalent. The American Academy of Pediatrics says, "the health benefits are not great enough to recommend routine circumcision for all male newborns."

[+]Upstairs_Reaction_18 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Fair enough, thanks. I saw enough studies about sensitivity to conclude that it makes no difference. There were good studies of that of men circumcised as adults who saw no difference. I appreciate your measured and rational response, thank you.

[+]SirIsaacGnuton 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Men circumcised as adults. Is that a population electing the procedure for religious reasons or AIDS prevention reasons? Religion could be a pretty strong motivator to minimize differences.

[–]Upstairs_Reaction_18 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are objective sensitivity tests and subjective response reports. Men circumcised as adults in Africa noted no difference in sensitivity. I doubt very much that thinking that HIV prevention was part of the the null hypothesis would alter a man’s subjective pleasure in having sex, but if you want to make the claim that such men had some psychosomatic non alteration of sexual pleasure, I can’t prove you wrong, but it’s a strange idea. I’d be pretty pissed off if my dick was suddenly less sensitive than before a surgical intervention no matter the reason.
Plenty of adult males are circumcised for medical reasons, there are some who choose it for cosmetic reasons, they seem to be happy enough. Men circumcised as infants enjoy sex immensely, I suppose you could argue that they would enjoy it even more immensely than immensely, maybe heavenly immensely, maybe so immensely that they all would have severe premature ejaculation as a result, I don’t know, it sounds super duper orgasmic, maybe enough to cause a seizure.

Not trying to downplay MGM but FGM has far more downsides than MGM but MGM is far far more prevelant. Idk, Ig you are right. Not enough attention is being paid to MGM because of religious stupidity and the thought of offending large swaths of Jews and Muslims is not popular with politicians.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

With all due respect, that's complete bullshit.

FGM only "has more downsides" because FGM includes all forms of genital modification to girls

Which, even when talking about Male Genital Mutilation, people still only think of the subset of issues like the most commonly accepted form. There are many others, but society in it's infinite sexist wisdom doesn't bother to count them as victims of MGM. Boys who have their penis' cut off entirely or their testicles damaged aren't included in the statistic, but for FGM a clitorectomy is included, as well as any and all other possible harms that maybe be done.

So the issue you're having has nothing to do with how severe MGM/FGM are, it's that society works so fucking hard to ensure male sexual abuse isn't treated as severely as female sexual abuse that even the stats for the terms don't reflect the same things.

Which is exactly what we're trying to change by treating the term Male Genital Mutilation as if it covers all forms of mutilation in the same way FGM covers it for girls, and we get pushback (even ITT, tbh) just using the term at all.

You're "Well girls have it worse so don't talk about the sexual abuse of boys unless you make sure to point out (repeatedly and with gumption!) how much worse girls have it" is just sexist bullshit that you should definitely feel ashamed of thinking contributed to this conversation.

Hint. You won't find any. I study medicine. I've looked.

Its a barbaric and outdated practice that outside of niche, emergency cases, should not, (and based on the way that new medical professionals are being educated, will not) exist in the future of medicine.

There is no point to FGM outside of cultural or religious ones. The same way there is no point to MGM outside of cultural or religious ones. You almost understood the point.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This.

The onus is not on us to prove mutilating the genitals of a child is harmful. That's the given, default, position.

The onus is on whatever pedo wants to cut up a child's genitals to prove it is objectively beneficial enough to warrant ignoring our default state of protecting children from sexual abuse.

They refuse to do this, and rely on "culture" as a reason to continue to sexually mutilate children

Barbarians (and i'm definitely including all americans who have as well in that)

In a land without soap and hot water, I might buy into the idea that male circumcision was helpful, assuming the cut boy did not get an infection.

But my little brother did get an infection even in this "clean" modern world we live in , and his penis did not heal right and was an open wound for a long, long time. I never saw it after the time I had to change his diapers, but I think it might have messed him up mentally as well as physically.

[–]Altruistic_Emotion_9 -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I just realized that a good number of subredditers here are anti-male circumcision like yourself. However, In my culture, all males about 10-15 of age must be circumcised, and this is usually followed up with a change in responsibility for the circumcised. Circumcision for male is viewed positively for men in my culture.

Plus after healing, there's no disadvantage of the procedure that I know, unless you tell me.

A little google search brought this up "provides life-long partial protection against HIV, decreases the risk of urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases (STIs), protects against cancer of the penis and prevents inflammation of the glands and foreskin altogether."

I know that I'm going to receive a thousand more downvotes for this, so this might as well be my last post here.

But seriously, what is the upside of anti-circumcision? What's the point?

[–]mik123mik1 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

The HIV study was shown to be false. The risk of utis is from people who don't clean. Removing any part of the body lowers your chances of cancer. It absolutely does not protect against inflammation of the glans, and a piece of you that is no longer attached cannot be inflamed. So how about we remove your pinky toes and pinky fingers? That will reduce your chances of cancer and prevent injury and inflammation!

No one has a problem with people choosing to be circumcised, but here in America and most of Europe, when it is done, its done to babies without anesthesia. And that's not just Jewish people here in the states. But the reason people are down voting you is because you are speaking nonsense about benefits that don't exist and defending the continued disregard of boys bodily autonomy while defending girls bodily autonomy. Btw, the reduces cancer and inflammation defenses of circumcision can be used for all forms mutilation as long as your willing to disregard the persons bodily autonomy.

The HIV study was shown to be false

Well, the foreskin isn't that soft nowadays and do not break easily during sex increasing the risk of HIV. All previous research confirming the hypothesis that foreskin is soft and breaks easily during sex should be thrown out?? Are they false?? Or maybe modern men's foreskins have actually grown resilience?

note the BMJ is a reputable medical journal and it cites many MANY sources. everywhere else only references the several observational studies done in africa which all had very glaring methodology issues.

BUT! let's hypothetically say that you are right and that it does help prevent HIV. Are babies at risk of HIV from having sex? Are children? Or is it that only people old enough to consent to such a procedure that are at risk? So even if you are correct, which you are not, that is not an acceptable reason to violate a boy's bodily autonomy and remove a piece of his body without his consent.

[–]Altruistic_Emotion_9 -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

So the whole point of anti-circumcision for boys is body autonomy, right? But the campaign against FGM isn't based on the same stupid arguments, but for female wellbeing. Putting the two campaigns at par with each other is ignorant and dangerous. Pro-FGM people argue that it is the same with male circumcision, so it isn't a big issue and let them continue mutilating young girls. These girls are our sisters and mothers, wives and girlfriends. Male circumcision is not the same as FGM.

[–]mik123mik1 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is all bodily autonomy. All of it. Most forms of FGM are no more risky than circumcision, but are treated as heinous because they violate the girls bodily autonomy. We could justify FGM fairly easily. All we have to do is disregard a woman's right to bodily autonomy, and ignore the value a woman might place on these body parts ... just like we do for boys.

Sexual assault can't be beneficial to anyone.

You call male circumcision sexual assault?!!

[–]plumberack 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Mutilating sexual parts of someone without their consent sounds sexual assault to me. You don't care about consent, no? That sounds like a rape supporter to me.

[+]Altruistic_Emotion_9 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah! Consent?! WTH with consent and body autonomy? You're brainwashed. Or you're just stupid

[–]plumberack 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

WTH with consent and body autonomy?

If you were not a supporter of sexual assault, you would understand that consent is a verbal aggreement that allows you if you can touch someone, let alone touching their private parts. Have you never taken consent from your partner? All of your sexual engagement are sexual assault then. How sad.

So crazy to see people actually advocating the sexual abuse and mutilation of children, sexistly, in this day and age

every "in my culture" argument can get shoved back up their ass, with every bit as much consent as they allowed the children they're abusing.

Yes

[–]AvailableCandidate89 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just like we call the sky blue.

Cutting someone's genitals up without consent is absolutely sexual assault, mutilation, and the same is true if done to women.

For some reason, we just have a massive problem with unashamed sexists who think it's ok to skin a baby boy's penis because of a whole list of bullshit "reasons", none of which are good enough to justify the sexual abuse of a child.

Completely agree with you. This subreddit is filled with painfully spiteful 'intactivists' so your comment won't ever see any general support here unlike in the real world where this issue is split more equally overall.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Weird, from over here in reality it looks like it's been infiltrated by pedophilic sexist child molesters and abusers like yourself.

Funny how that works.

[+]IcyImplement3617 -12 points-11 points-10 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yh the only two commenters on this entire thread. Sure looks like infiltration. You got any more random profanity to add? Disgusting behaviour. Look up the definitions of the words you use before you use them why don't you. Because pedophile rly aint it - "a person sexually attracted to children". Why you making a medical procedure sexual? That sounds awfully 'pedophilic' to me.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Ya know? A pedophilic child sexual abuse advocate (and sexist one, at that) calling my behavior disgusting isn't the "Gotcha!" you might think it is

I'm using those words accurately, maybe you should be more concerned with why the shoe fits.

[+]IcyImplement3617 -9 points-8 points-7 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yet fails to justify how it is so. You can't just call someone a pedophile without having to explain yourself. Words have meaning. And you said a whole lotta nothing right there. So before you call out someone's "gotcha!" with a gotcha!, ask yourself did i really make a comprehensive point? Or did you just spew a bunch of slurs without explaining how they apply.

We're on a mens rights subreddit. I assume you also believe we shouldn't immediately believe ALL women with sexual assault allegations? Using the same logic, you can't just make a huge freakin allegation without backing it up. Back it up.

You simply can't. Thats why in your replies you've said absolutely nothing to back up these big words. Perhaps because you know you can't explain how billions of parents suddely become sexually attracted to children and sexist to their own sex under your mischaracterization simply because their child had a medical procedure. Make it make sense💫

[–]AvailableCandidate89 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You're a pedophile for defending the practice of sexually molesting and arousing infant boys in order to get them erect for the pending mutilation.

The exact "medical procedure" we're talking about. It requires performing an actual sex act and making the child sexually aroused before torturing them.

You're the one with your head up your ass here bud. We don't have to defend that mutilating the genitals of children is wrong, you have to provide evidence that whatever imagined benefits are enough to put aside our usual and default protection of a child from sexual abuse.

And you're not doing that, which means you're defending the sexual abuse of children, which fine you're right that's not technically pedophilia, it's just defending it as something acceptable and not to be judged, which i consider just as bad. Tomato tomahto.

[–]IcyImplement3617 -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What the hell, just wow. Any ounce of credibility your argument could have had just went. Nobody, not anybody, in their right mind would believe what you sir just said. Read it back to yourself, please. Idk what circumcision you're referring to, but doctors do not molest and arouse freakin babies you sicko.

It wasn't my prerogative to list the benefits of circumcision for that is the other guy's statement. The burden of proof is on you sir, you made an accusation, you have to support it. And if this is the support you think won your position, go on live tv and say it, you will be mocked for how outlandish and nonsensical it is, even among largely uncircumcised societies.

Also i saw that backpeddling at the end there. Correct, its not pedophilia. Therefore, its not supporting pedophilia. Neither is it sexual abuse for it is a non-sexual act. Is a surgery to remove cancer of the penis sexual in nature just because it involves a sexual organ? No of course not. You are the messed up one for making something sexual which isn't.

But i don't mind listing the benefits to prove a point, because science backs them: - Easier/better hygiene - Lower risk of UTI - Lower STI - Virtually almost no risk of penile cancer - Lower risk of cervical cancer for female partners And more...

^ it not only helps male health but also female. You can deny the science (as i'm sure you will), but the science is there and it is credible. Because unlike you, these have been peer reviewed by qualified medical professionals. Not sensationalists like you who shout buzzwords rather than fact checking.

[–]AvailableCandidate89 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What the hell, just wow. Any ounce of credibility your argument could have had just went.

Way to dismiss the argument that you, personally, don't like instead of pointing out how the argument might be wrong

Nobody, not anybody, in their right mind would believe what you sir just said

The majority of people here believe this. You are the moral equivalent of a pedo by advocating for doing anything with a child's genitals without their consent (or even with it, leave kids' dicks alone)

Easier/better hygiene - Lower risk of UTI - Lower STI

Wrong, the foreskin helps with hygiene, removing it makes it worse.

Wrong, there is no statistically significantly lower risk of UTI's

Wrong, there is not statistically significantly lower risk of STI's

So you're just full of bullshit today, huh? (that which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence, you don't have any evidence, and i don't need any to say mutilating a child's genitals counts as sexual abuse, because that's the default state)

so go fuck yourself!

[–]IcyImplement3617 -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lmao, he realized his argument was so outlandish that he deleted his comments and account

Such as these studies showing female circumcision reducing HIV infection by 50%?

Stallings et al. (2005) Reported that, in Tanzanian women, the risk of HIV among women who had undergone female circumcision was roughly half that of women who had not; the association remained significant after adjusting for region, household wealth, age, lifetime partners, union status, and recent ulcer.

Georgia State University, Public Health Theses. The Association between female circumcision and the Risk of HIV/AIDS in Kenyan Girls and Women (15-49 Years):

RESULTS: This study shows an inverse association between female circumcision and HIV, after adjusting for confounding variables. DISCUSSION: The inverse association between female circumcision and HIV established in this study suggests a possible protective effect of female circumcision against HIV. This finding suggests therefore the need to authenticate this inverse association in different populations and also to determine the mechanisms for the observed association. This study investigated whether there is a direct association between female circumcision and HIV. Surprisingly, the results indicated that the practice of female circumcision turned out to reduce the risk of HIV. While a positive association was hypothesized, a surprising inverse association between cases of female circumcision and positive HIV serostatus was obtained, hence indicating that female circumcision may have protective properties against the transmission of HIV. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1113&context=iph_theses
