We all knew this. My guess is if you posted this article on AskFeminists, most of the posters would agree with the findings saying that that is what they have been saying all along. However, there will be posters on that sub that will continue to push the narrative that women are paid less than men for the same job, and they will still get upvoted even though it's wrong. Such is the nature of echo chambers.

When they calculate this earnings/pay gap, do they account for men (or women) coming home from a hard day's work, and all their wages going into a joint account with their partner? And is it not the case, that most of the working partner's wages, will be spent on everything for the family — food, clothing, rent, utilities etc?

I agree with the societal implications but calling this a discovery is pretty balsy... I've read this at least 1,000 times on various men's right forum.

Women can't support themselves on a low salary in a bachelor pad or mobile home in a cheap town because they need trinkets and tchotchkes the the point where it seems like they can't stop themselves from buying that shit. Men need three squares, two sets of clothes, a place to sack out, and maybe a phone. I could easily live on a Walmart associate salary given that stuff.

I saw a feminist in thejournal .ie (irish rag) complaining that when you add up all the pay in a company for the men then adding up all the pay for women you getca gap. This is the new pathetic tactic they've figured out between them to avoid decades of data showing theres no systemic pay discrimination at equivalent job levels.

It's all a game to scam government funds for unemployable white women in NGOs.

NB i do thing pay discrimination can happen but it seems to be isolated accounts and can happen to anyone even men like in google in Cali it hat to pay men backpay on $9m as google underpaid male engineers. I think there have been multiple studies dating back to the 90s that show when all variables are equalized education, hours, job title,industry etc women actually earn slightly more and there is a wage gap that discriminates against men actually. I think they termed it a female "talent premium" that companies must pay to retain and attract women especially at management level.

Also Goldin in the initial article I read discussing her victory focused on education in her work and concluded that the main factor was education men stayed longer in school and we all know about STEM but of course the guardian being the feminist rag it has become decided to write a half ass article minimizing her body of work to some bogus "motherhood penalty". I'm sure she would be furious reading that article but they don't care theyre in the business of selling papers to appease the feminist mob!

I guess the argument is that choosing to have kids shouldn't ideally make such a serious imposition on people's earning potential, men or women, and that isn't necessarily wrong. I mean, there are lots of people - men and women - who'd love to have families but right now don't feel like they can afford to. Whatever anyone thinks about this, having birth rates below replacement in many advanced economies is not sustainable.

Here's my view on this. On one hand, we have people saying "well, people choose to have kids." I've said that myself, and it's true, although the sad reality is that we do at some point need people to have kids. On the other hand, we have ambitious people who want to be captains of industry - which is great - but who also and simultaneously want to be stay-at-home parents, which is not physically possible. A choice is involved and, while we'd hope everyone can achieve a reasonable financial situation, it is not reasonable to expect the same financial situation in each case.

I'm sure we'd prefer to live in a society where everyone can have a reasonable standard of living while being a dedicated parent. Becoming a stay-at-home parent should not represent inevitable financial ruin and it absolutely can right now.

If this is a gendered issue at all it's became women, in my experience and in the statistics, are much more likely to want to look after the kids, regardless of whether they have the choice to, which is an uncomfortable reality for third-wave feminism and engages complex issues of biological essentialism and sociology. To any dedicated feminist reading this, bear in mind, that can be true for the population-level average; it doesn't have to be true for you. Between me and my partner, I'd definitely be the one staying home with Huffers Junior.

But none of that affects the desirability or validity of any particular solution to the fact that people can't afford to raise a family if they want to, which is a terrible situation.
