I never understood the concept of female hypergamy.

If women want to 'date up' the socioeconomic ladder, then are those already at the top doomed to never be in an ideal relationship?

Let's say Bill Gates' daughter, or a female member of the Royal Family. They can never be hypergamous because there are no men above them. But it seems illogical that they would never be in a happy, fulfilled relationship.

Also, the reason given for female hypergamy is due to higher reproductive opportunity cost so they must be compensated accordingly. But again, this makes no sense. Sure, if you're poor then you would choose a partner than can materially provide for the cost/time/effort of having and raising children. But if you're a big time female lawyer making fat stacks or a trust fund girlie then what's the point aiming up the socioeconomic ladder and down the attractiveness/genetic ladder?

From wikipedia:

Marriage reduces the overall genetic quality of her offspring by precluding the possibility of impregnation by a genetically higher quality male, albeit without his parental investment, but the reduction may be compensated by greater levels of parental investment by her genetically lower quality husband
