The opposite would be a stay-at-home husband who isn't earning anything and who takes care of the children. What you describe is just a situation where the man and the woman are equals.

Agree with most of these except the income part. There are plenty of non trad power-couples where they both have high paying careers. There are also plenty of trad families living in poverty.

There's nothing "traditional" about being a high earning employee.

The most traditional arrangement would be both parents and the kids working together in the family business. Usually the farm.

Money doesnt really matter, is more of an attitude, he could be a high earner and still not be trad:

50/50, puts a lot of importance on sex (wouldnt wait for too long), openly consumes porn and prostitution, openly kinky, finds prudes boring, finds vanilla sex boring, experiments with men, considers marriage unnecessary, those are the most defining traits of a far from trad man

Pretty much me! I’m a short bisexual dude who’s been homeless and lived out of a car. I love animals and art and a cappella music, am a counselor at a shelter where I’m paid almost nothing to save the lives of people overdosing in the dead of night when no one else is around.

I’m pretty disorganized, but I have a lot of passion and emotion and I share it freely with people.

I tend to be the one who looks after the house as I like to cook and garden (tho interesting note: gardening is actually considered masculine in other countries!)

I’m chill and willing to compromise and don’t care about competition or status.

I’d hate to be a trad husband. I’d ALSO hate to be married to a trad wife (for basically the same reasons.)

Luckily I’m engaged to someone who’s as gentle and fun and artistic as I am, so we’re well suited.

The only edit I’d make is that I disagree on the money piece. Maybe it depends region, but where I live (myself included) most of the non-traditional men don’t make low to mid-range. They all make good money and don’t attach their monetary success to household roles. It’s a separate sphere.

Additionally, I’d say they (we) look at providing more broadly than traditional men/women.

The best thing my wife has ever said to me (she is an ER Doc) is that when shit hits the fan and she is feeling overwhelmed, it’s my voice she hears in her head to calm down. That doesn’t come from me being the primary breadwinner I’ve been throughout her training. It’s because I provide her the emotional support and safe harbor in a the wild and unpredictable world she works in.

Last thing I say, is that non-traditional probably doesn’t look at things as black and white. It isn’t one person being the absolute leader or 50/50. They’re operating as a team to make sure what has to be done is done. In my family, I’d say it’s been 90/10 with me doing earning, childrearing, and household because I want my wife focused on being able to become the best doctor she can become. If that changes once she is an attending, great, if not, great. As long as we both think things are fair, then we’re good and happy.

ETA: actually, one more last thing. You can hold some traditional views and still be “modern”. Like I hold some values very strongly around the nuclear family, being involved in my community, the importance of marriage and parenthood. I’ve never wanted to have a ONS and was always happy to wait before sex. Those are probably all traits/values more associated with “Traditional Men”.

The most important thing, in my mind, for being “Modern” is that you’re not attached to things only being one, rigid way. There are lots of ways a relationship can look and unless you have the perspective that there is only one way (the way a trad man/woman would), I’d consider you to be “Modern”.

I'm not married, but I live with my partner. I'm basically the non-trad you described.

No one leads the household. I honestly don't see the point of it. It's not Downton Abbey. If we want to redecorate or change the budget, we talk about it.

If the traits that make a "trad husband" are:

High earning, sole provider - (ex: regional manager for int'l shipping company)

Doesn't need to be a high earner, just needs to be the provider of the family.

I'd also add, is protective of his women, in all ways, so he even does not let his wife be lusted after, makes her dress modestly, keeps her from posting pictures of herself online, does not let her go out alone to have fun.
