Imagine Netflix making a series about misandry where a young girl as young as 13 is accused of hating men, and a male doctor is alone with her asking her if she wants to touch penises, and the girl is told to lift up her hood to show her clitoris. I canceled Netflix during the Cuties debacle.

But yeah, Netflix is doing something called corporate whitewashing. The company itself is notorious for its aggressive tax avoidance, so while they rake in record profits and raise prices every year, they pay what amounts to pennies in taxes for them.

However, they use their "social conscientiousness" to take attention off that. They embrace far-left politics, they put whatever hip woke flag is in fashion on their Twitter account, and they take every opportunity to demean men. Feminists clap like brain-damaged seals and happily throw money at them.

I refuse to support such a horrible company because I have actual principles. Feminists don't. They just want to hear their beliefs spoken back to them.

The more I hear about this show, the more I feel annoyed and consider cancelling my Netflix subscription. You don’t have to be white to understand that this show is being treated as a propaganda to spread hate against boys. I was never going to watch it even before this fiasco but after all this drama I will make sure to definitely never watch it at any cost. Am I missing out on something extraordinary? Owen Cooper was 14 when the movie was filmed. Child actors who are even younger go through a LOT within the movies that would be inappropriate in real life. There's hundreds and hundreds of shows and movies where kids are murdered, tortured, raped, beat, etc or exposed to terrifying monsters, people, or situations. Where the lines they say are completely inappropriate, whether sexual, graphic, or laced with profanities. Where the kids are either the victims of something, or the perpetrators of the horror themselves. As far as "within the film universe" trauma goes, this show is pretty low on the list as far as what the kid actor suffered inside the role.

I don't know how he was treated behind the scenes. God knows there's more than enough trauma there, but I haven't heard anything about this specific instance.

Owen Cooper played the role amazingly. I give him major props for his abilities. The show itself held a lot of promise, as far as the story that they wanted to tell. But if they wanted it to be an actual narrative about "manosphere bad!! Corrupting young boys!! Men violent and can't control themselves!! Blah blah blah!!", I think they really missed the mark. There's some very forced and mainly irrelevant references. And that's about it. They basically 'name drop'.

For me, watching it, it was a lot more about the struggle of being bullied. The helplessness and breaking point. How important it is to be involved and to know and understand your kids language (the emojis). How even if you think you're close to your kids, they still may not go to you, whether they're embarrassed, don't want to worry you, whatever. They're in a weird space between adult and child, and struggling with where to be independent and where to rely on you, and they're going to screw up, sometimes really badly. It spoke about the indifference and inability of the teachers. Who were once supposed to be at least part of the safety net, but now are so underpaid and overworked and often checked out due to so many factors. They're often crippled by admin and parents, and the kids are out of control. It was the struggle to be better, do better, than how you were raised. Dad was in a home where his dad beat him. He didn't bring that with him. He wasn't perfect, but he tried to do better. And even in situations where he was pushed to the absolute brink, he exhibited some pretty impressive self control. And so did his son, at times. There were so many positives and thoughtful moments, while also having an undercurrent of "even when you do try, even when you do improve, even when you're there and involved, things can still happen. You can do everything right, and still lose"

I know a lot of people are talking about how it's a show that just highlights "boys bad, boy kills poor, innocent girl", but that is absolutely not what I got from it. You can be a victim AND a perpetrator. Everyone has a breaking point. People handle things badly when they're desperate, especially teenagers. And things are not always what they seem. It was a raw story, and a harsh one. And even if the makers intended it to be "boys bad", I really think they missed the mark on that narrative, and if that's the only thing people take away from it, it's their loss.

Ep1, the strip search is meant to be shocking. It’s the hook. It’s there to shock u and think ‘fucking hell’ the kids in there for murder with very strong evidence it was him. There was still uproar about it if u looked on facebook or spoke to people thats seen it.

The comment about the ‘woman’ beating the child, theyre both children. I’ve literally seen the same thing happen in school to both genders. It wasn’t portrayed in a good light or a positive thing.

In short this post is stupid. Not everything is against men this show is literally showing how bad things can get for men over social media. It’s showing how toxic the online space for young lads can get.

I interpreted Adolescence as an anti-bullying show, I have no idea how you can interpret the show's message as feminist or something like that. Hate to break it to you but this is standard practice when you're "admitted" to a secure facility such as jail, psych hospital, rehab etc. They need to make sure no weapons or drugs get in.

And it's the same for the ladies. Squat and spread.

I think this scene was more important because it focused on the fathers point of view. And the difficulty of having to watch his son go through such an ordeal, being treated like a criminal even though he's only 13 years old.

The scene in question it doesn’t even show anything, the camera is literally an up close shot of his father’s face while he stands in the room during the police strip search of his son. It’s only audio. There’s about a million worse things young actors have been exposed to compared to this.

All that aside, I found this show kinda boring and SPOILER ALERT, in the end there is no twist or big reveal, the son ends up saying he will wants to plead guilty to the murder.

OP completely missed the point of the show.

The last episode focuses on the family dealing with the aftermath, and agonising over what went wrong.

They recalled their son staying up online til 1am on his computer and them believing he was safe because he was indoors, at home, when clearly he was being exposed to horrible brainwashing content (80/20 etc).

They also mentioned he tried other hobbies which didn't really "stick." Which was why they got him the computer.

Implying the son was looking for an outlet, some way to connect with himself and the world, and he found it in the perilous world of the internet.

Episodes 3 and 4 both include an anecdote about the son playing football badly and the father looking away in shame, pointing to complex psychological barriers preventing some parents being truly supportive and understanding of their kids. With those barriers up, kids tend to look for idols elsewhere. Like the scumbag Tate.

Episode 3 shows the sons internalised anger. Amazing acting, terrifying to behold. His self disgust is palpable. If he had a weapon he might've killed her and himself. Where did all the pain come from? The show doesn't try to answer everything. It asks the questions. No tricks.

I'm currently writing a report for school on how red pill content and the manosphere affect young men and women. I came here hoping to find something to quote, but this post really intrigued me. Despite its upsetting nature, I got through all of Adolescence, and as a 16 year old girl, I feel it was a very important show. Since its release, more attention has been brought back to misogynistic ideologies and how accessible they are to impressionable teens, which is a very important conversation to have!!

To adress the title, I believe he was made to lift his penis to show the loss of agency and how harsh the justice system is for youths, and a corrupt justice system in general, as well as to emphasise his powerlessness in the face of a serious criminal accusation.

Calling the show 'disturbing' is very accurate. A 13 year old boy murders his peer. That is disturbing, but that's the point of the show.

Your statement on the scene where Briony, the psychologist, is asking Jamie if he wanted to touch girls' vulvas lacks context awareness and, misunderstanding of real world practices, also perhaps you've simply missed the point of the scene.
Jamie did understand what was asked once Briony said vagina instead of vulva which to me, showed a lack of education on the female anatomy, he then clearly got uncomfortable and became defensive.
The psychologist asked him that because it's her job to understand his mindset and what he thinks is right and wrong. In real life practices, professionals use anatomically correct terms and ask uncomfortable questions in a careful and trauma-informed way. It's not done lightly, and it certainly wouldn't have been written into the script without serious thought.

Instead of critiquing the system, character behaviour or narrative framing, you're critiquing a fictional psychologist following a procedure in a fictional narrative. What you've said dismisses the scene as outrageous instead of appreciating its context, purpose or accuracy. It's a shallow take.

Saying that Briony tried to trick Jamie into saying that he had seen violent behaviour towards women from his dad is uninformed and mislables the entire process.
Calling it a "trick" suggests that Briony has some agenda to frame or blame his dad, which isn't supported by the narrative (aka projection of bias, not analysis). She was simply using some standard methods (like open-ended questions, repetition, and behavioural cues) to get answers from a closed-off Jamie. It's what she's supposed to do, especially since Jamie showed behavioural signs of exposure to violence/abuse.

I'm not sure what reason there is to emphasise the fact that the actor is a male when you've talked primarily about using correct female anatomy, which, if you consider the context in which it was used, is appropriate. Owen Cooper, Jamie's actor, is 15/16, he would have finished sex education classes already and be aware of the terms.

If you're genuinely concerned about child actors being exposed to mature themes, that concern should be consistent regardless of gender. Otherwise, you're not critiquing the ethics of the production—you’re just reacting to discomfort about male vulnerability being depicted onscreen.

Also, Owen Cooper is not just some random kid, he’s a professional actor working under strict legal protocols. The scenes are written, rehearsed, monitored, and shot with extreme care.

This is powerful storytelling that deliberately makes you uncomfortable for a reason. Don't blame the show for doing exactly what it set out to do, which is to challenge you.

That show was actually perfect at depicting how a parent would react to how if their child committed such a terrible crime. The feeling of failure, unknown of what the future holds, should they support their child or not.

Also whats the issue with a girl kicking a boy in the head? The main protagonist literally stabs a girl multiple times, so we established that it’s ok for a girl to be stabbed by a dude but a girl kicking a boy in the head is an issue, or is the issue that the girl is black kicking a white boy?

It’s not even fiction though. There is epidemic of men who hate women so much they kill them. No one knows why but awareness of it is the first step to dismantling the culture that leads to this phenomena. And there always has been this culture, really. In the past 2 months, from independent news sources I follow, I’ve seen 4 articles talking about little boys around the boy in the shows age (12, 11, 14, 14) who actually did kill little girls they went to school with.
