Obviously our current popular naming culture is rooted in tradition. However, since we have moved past sexist origins I think it would be more logical to swap which gender more commonly changes their name for marriage for reasons I will outline below:

• Mothers create a couples child. They suffer the burden or sacrificing bodily comfort, risking their health and putting their independence on hold for 9 months only to endure significant pain to birth each child. That I think should come with the honour of having their children named after them.

•Divorce rates are high in developed countries, and around 90% of mothers will have primary custody of their children. This creates the problem of leaving women with the choice of either keeping their ex’s last name or having a different last name to their children, creating day to day issues. For example, medical care and school registration. On the other hand, because 90% of divorced men do not have primary custody, changing their name back wouldn’t cause them encounter these issues nearly as much.

•it makes sense to name the child after the person who is certain to be the parent. There are no questions or surprises as to who the genetic mother is.
