The hot friends I have who use it are just using it to supplement their real life options. Tellingly, none of them has ever had a good date from online and they end up dating guys from their social circle anyway.

I've never tried online dating, but plenty of my attractive lady friends have used it. It can be difficult to meet new people when you're a busy working adult, no matter what you look like. Not everyone wants to hang out in bars or nightclubs.

Hell, I live in LA and it's not uncommon to see actual celebrities using apps.

Online dating is far, far less fraught if you don't have the intensity of the "Black Pill Goggles". Most people are not thinking "I'm a shitty person, so I'm only allowed to date online :(" or "I'm a quality catch, so I don't NEED online dating!"

Most people are thinking "Eugh I'm tired from a long work week and don't really have the energy to go out and meet people. Maybe I'll make a profile and see if I can find someone that looks fun online."

They aren't thinking about what it says about them. For most people, that's such a needless level of hamstering that it never even occurs to them. They're just interested in finding new ways to meet people.

It's become relatively normalized as a whole. Most single people I know have a profile on one app or another.

The more people one encounters, the more likely one will find that compatible person. Online dating allows even good-looking women a way to screen many more men than just coming across men in her day-to-day interactions would. That’s what I see the appeal of it being to attractive women.

Time and different circadian rhythm. Working full time, commute, working out (so you can work), chores and being naturally an early bird makes online dating easiest option.

Attention and Chads. They may talk to average men, but to average men they're "not looking for anything" or "looking for friends".

Shouldn't they meet men via mutual friends. Where the men have been vetted with social proof and such?

They're not looking for an average man to vet, they want men who are so sexually attractive that any form of vetting is useless.

In addition, it's more discrete to fuck a random Chad found on a dating app than a Chad in your social circle. It's also easier to find them there, as they're rare.

Some of them are busy or don't go out. I have a coworker who met her S.O. through Tinder and she seems happy.
A lot of them don't want to date. A large portion of the OLD population is looking for an ego boost.
Attractive isn't a universal standard. You can be attractive to a minority of people due to an aesthetic or lifestyle and so it's more efficient to mill through thousands of viewers.

I'm a young, skinny, childless woman. Between work, studying, and the gym, I just don't meet that many new people. I live in a big international city as an expat and my social network isn't huge here. I'm over partying and prefer keeping chill weekends keeping healthy, so I'm rarely in bars/clubs these days.

OMG, dude, everyone uses dating apps. Some women are introverts who don't like to go out much. Some women work a lot and don't have time to schmooze around. Some women have a small social circle they don't want to cause drama in by dating the guys. Some women move in mostly-women circles--if you work for an arts charity and your hobbies are book club and gardening, there just won't BE a lot of guys in your social circle.

Heck, some women like the straightforwardness of OLD--no "is this a date? Does he like me?"; we all know why we're here. There's nothing "suspicious" about any of this.

for the most part i use online dating for casual dating purposes, meaning "oh i have nothing to do on thursday so i guess i'll schedule a date then", when i was tinder whoring i wasn't really looking for a relationship so its not analogous to meeting someone through my friends, its a separate thing.

Most of my friends who used online dating, men and women both, used it as a supplement to meeting people IRL. Especially as you get further into your twenties, opportunities to meet people are fewer, and more people are paired off and unavailable. Why not set up an online dating profile and browse, in addition to trying to meet people through your social circle, activities etc.? It's not an either/or thing.

1) People who have moved for work or studies and now have a more limited friends circle

2) People who have gotten extremely unlucky IRL (outliers) and felt the need to find more options using alternative means

there are a LOT of inactive ghost profiles on there.

girls will break up with a boyfriend or get pumped and dumped or just want to check it out and make a profile. they use it for a few days and then when they get bored, instead of deactivating their profile they just delete the app from their phone.

also when tinder first started, they went around and paid sorority chicks to make profiles.
