Suicide rates for women are so low that oscillations within +-100% may just be statistical blip; additive noise has this effect on extremely low rates of Whatever There Is. If you have a small village where no murders occured last year, and this year one murder occured, statistically, the annual murder rate rose by infinite amount of percents.

Social isolation theory used to be big in Sociology. I don't know much about it but I heard that it's fallen out of favour. However, it could explain why older women are experiencing higher suicides; since they're most likely to live on after their husband passes and kids grow up they can become isolated and depressed.

The lack of family support while trying to take care of demanding parents, children, and a job is a concern in my generation. I do believe that lack of extended family, not to mention more then 1 parent was a mistake my generation excelled at.

We darn well messed up. 1 person can't do everything.

We’re increasingly disconnected and isolated and not having real human relationships with each other. All the factors that have been listed, drug abuse, economic downturn, debt, etc have always existed but what was different before was that people had their families nearby for support. They talked to each other, or they talked to a therapist. They didn’t go online to talk to strangers and get sucked into toxic communities that feed their anger. They didn’t go on social media and compare themsleves to other people’s fake idealized versions of their own lives. Humans are social beings and everything about our world is increasingly anti-social.

I'm only a sophomore in college but almost every fellow college girl at my job(more business-resume-oriented) has to have a daily vent about the lifestyle choices they actually seem really unhappy about making, using stats from their intro to psych classes about how evil it is to have kids as a way to make up for something they really seem to feel a need to make up for all the time. This has taught me two things: 1. I fucking hate "sociology" classes. Like my psych class was literally just a 20 something year old grad student telling us "Guys, don't have kids. You're too young to get married." while also saying "Kids at age 8 are ready to choose gender transition surgery." There was a lot of really poorly drawn conclusions and generalizations about people internalizing prejudices. Some of it seemed very valid, imo, but a large bulk of it really seemed like a way to make masculinity in itself both something we can somehow live without and something we should live without; something we should deny the existence of but also condemn. Wtf is this shit. Droves of young women and men are wholeheartedly stuffing their brains with this angst everywhere and they don't understand why they feel so uneasy about it at the same time lol 2. Women not just being able to work but also having to work has made everyone in more recent generations lack confidence and hope for the future. Like I wanna do whatever I wanna do, but if it's have kids and stay at home with them then fuck I gotta do so much more to get myself at a place where that's possible than people used to before.

I also think birth control is a huge factor in societal issues but I really don't wanna fight about it right now lol. And ofc these aren't the only things I think are reasons for suicide, just stuff that seems more and more prevalent to me every day. Substance abuse is insane. I should not have had as many dead friends as I do at 20, as someone who has never partied or "messed with the wrong crowd".

I'd imagine increased rates of alcohol and other substance abuse, the desolation of rural communities by a changing economy that has been pushing out the working class for decades, and feelings of worthlessness caused by a culture steeped in social media "highlight reels" all play significant roles. just a guess though.

The gender gap in various lifestyle diseases is also narrowing. Such as cardiovascular diseases, some forms of cancer, etc. Women live more stressful lives than they used to, they also work more and smoke and drink more - all things which previously were more in the male domain, and consequentially also more subject to the same kinds of diseases as men (in addition to their own specific female ones of course).

The figures might not be rising that much. Women might have been committing suicide in far larger numbers than we know for a long time, because they are heavier opioid user than men, and a lot of suicides could simply be counted as overdoses.

My friend's aunt's death was counted as an overdose, but everyone in their family thought it was suicide.

It might be that women aren't hiding it as much that they committing suicide.

It seems that the suicide rate is rising for women, particularly older women, any thoughts on why this might be? What could explain the higher rate?

At a guess, maybe that women now have to face up to the same pressures that men do and it makes them depressed. I urge any woman who believes that having an equal working life is going to be golden era for women to be cynical.

One thing you can bet on though - women will get help for it much quicker than men have ever been able to. In fact, the best that depressed men could hope for is for there to be a rush to help depressed women, and then hope for some of that help to trickle down to them.

This is seriously bad news. Rising suicide rates for anyone is very bad news.

Perhaps we can reduce the despair and the ugliness by creating beauty and life. But, you know, that means acting in creation. You can just create a beautiful bird feeder in your yard. Even if no one ever see it, and they do see it, but you see it. The beauty you added to life. Just a little.

The female suicide attempt rate has always been relatively high. The thing is, suicidal men tend to choose methods that are hard to mess up (a gun, hanging), while women have traditionally gone for methods that have a higher failure rate (drowning, poison). One of the tragic consequences of the internet is that it's much, much easier now than ever before to find out how to, say, effectively poison yourself.

MtF transgenders could explain part of it. they have a very high rate of suicide and they're probably getting counted as women now whereas in the past they would be lumped in with men
