I think there are three separate aspects of "spending money on a person" in your post.

First, there's shared expenses. I'd say, as long as you split your expenses evenly, those don't count as "spending money on someone". You would have to pay bills anyway, and it is likely cheaper to share rather than not share. Of course, two people need a bigger place to live than one person and probably also use more water, but there are also some constant costs. For example, I would have gotten the same internet plan on my own, and the public broadcasting fee is paid per household here. So, these are some bills that my bf only need to pay half of. Our flat is also cheaper than if each of us was living on their own. So, I'd say it's not a requirement to spend (more) money on rent and bills.

Another thing are gifts and spending money on her part of the bill when going on dates together (e.g. food, admission fees). Those are optional. Yes, it is a custom to give gifts to others on typical gift-giving occasions like birthdays or Christmas, but even then, you can make a no-gifts agreement with your partner. My bf and I don't get gifts for each other for Christmas or any other occasion. So, no it's not a requirement to spend money on gifts and dates for a woman.

The third part are the costs for your own activities during a relationship. You might go out on a date with your SO, and pay your own part of the bill, or you need to spend money on transportation to and from the date (gas/fuel, car sharing fees, public transportation tickets). I think in this case, it depends on how you look at it. If you never left the house if you were single, yes it would probably be a requirement for most women that you "spend money on them" by spending money on transportation and dates (your part of the bill). Most women (and most men) would probably expect that you leave the house at least sometimes and that you then also pay for your own stuff at least sometimes. However, most people would probably do something that costs money even if they were single. Instead of getting dinner with their SO, they would go out with friends, or they'd buy themselves a new video game. So, again, I think that it doesn't count as "spending money on a woman".

Casual sex tends to be equal because the encounter is so short that gender role expectations are negated by the extremely short duration.

In a relationship, a man spending money on a woman is a requirement IMO especially if married.

A man who refuses to spend money and demands that every bill or night out be split 50/50 will not be viewed as a good provider and she will lose respect for him consciously or unconsciously.

I've read a bit of your posts and from your point of view I think that the answer is yes.

Some of the points are contentious though. For example, whenever I've moved in with girls the cost of living has gone down or remained similar and quality of life gets a bit of a boost as you have someone making food for you and doing half of the hosiework (at least). Plus I've wound up with more space or at least a lot more.privacy than if I share with randoms. I could afford my own place but where I live that is pricey and would require me putting down a deposit and etc on my own. Then I'd have to buy all my own furniture and so on.

You do end up spending money on dates and trips, although that is usually fun or it should be. For me, being in a relationship winds up cheaper though as when I'm single I like going out and meeting new people (which usually costs more). I also suspects it costs a bit less in food as I don't usually bother to go grocery shopping when I'm single, as it's much more time efficient to eat out or get some kind of ready meal.

I think that saving money plays a big part in why people still cohabit.

Ime not really no. In my current relationship my gf is the one who keeps buying me shit all the time. Of course that means I have to reciprocate. But reciprocal gifts is not "spending money on women."

When it comes to actual large costs like going away together we always split that shit 50/50 or as close to it as possible. We are planning to move in together in the next few years and the same will apply there.

When we go out to eat we do the same we "go dutch" never has she expected me to pay for everything.

I don't feel like I'm just spending money on her at all. I feel like we do both put money into shared experiences but we put in as close to equal amounts as possible.

And before someone says "you wouldn't spend that in the first place if you didn't have a gf" no I would be spending money in a similar way or just burning it on different shit like new phones, new clothes, new gadgets or whatever instead of having fun times in a fancy hotel with someone I love and having a lot of sex... which is the better spend of money?

I'm happy going 50/50 on doing stuff with my girlfriend, it presents a good value proposition to me and I don't consider it to be "spending money on women" when there are equal contributions being made.

No fucking way. There were a few girls along the way that expected to be paid for, but almost all of them we either split the bill or took turns paying. Furthermore, I had way more success asking a girl to buy me a drink when going out than the other way around. As for...gas, or something? A lot of them just drove over to my place most of the time.

Plus, you don't count the shit that you'd be spending on yourself anyway. Doing otherwise is just looking for an excuse to hate on women.

but it's definitely not a requirement, especially for more casual types of relationships. or if you avoid CareerWomen™ and tend to go out with younger girls who may still be in school or working shit jobs, you can keep them very happy with a minimal outlay of cash.

In terms of gift giving vs gift receiving, the ratio is probably 10 to 1 in the woman's favor when you add up birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine's Day, Christmas, engagements, Mother's Day, etc. Sure, always exceptions, but overwhelmingly women have a rigid reward system in place for men who play along and will not reward those who don't.
