I wrote a post about John and Mary, a happy couple, and one of them met another person with whom a better relationship is possible and likely. I'm curious now. What you do if:

You have a partner. You are a in a good relationship, and you're both experienced enough to acknowledge it, and also experienced enough to acknowledge the limitations you have because you're simply not EXACTLY a perfect match.
But you work for it, your partner works for it too, and you often end up quite happy. When you don't end up happy you KNOW it wasn't because the other was sloppy or lazy, but because of something that can't be changed without great harm to your partner.
Sometimes you reckon, the relationship puts a bit of a strain on you, as it puts on your partner sometimes. A whole weekend doing something you're mildly annoyed by and your partner loves. Your partner's simply OBNOXIOUS friends that your partner likes so much and sees so often... And vice versa.

All in all, you know that you're not perfect together, but no one is on that account, and you're both pretty sure it is unlikely that either of you will do better, that's WHY you agreed on a relationship for starters right? You are lucky, and you know it. BUT...

Someone comes. You don't pursue the person, but the person is interested and single. And on ALL FACTORS YOU CAN POSSIBLY ACCOUNT FOR, this person is more of a match for you than your current partner. You're sure that AT LEAST the "bit of a strain" you perceive won't exist anymore. You're sure that this person is aware and intelligent enough to put efforts in the relationship you'll develop, provided that you had time to talk. (Coworker again?...)

You know that you're such a good match to this person that this person will hardly meet someone more fitting, and this person knows it, hence why this person is daring to show attraction for someone committed. You will be happier than you are. This person will be happier with you than your current partner is and possibly as happy as this person can be in a relationship. Maybe you believe in soulmates now.
You also know (I'll stress this) that you and your current partner are already lucky so your current partner probably won't fare as well as your current partner fares now if you leave, let alone as well as you will fare with the new one.

Please, state your gender.

  • Would you do the exchange?
  • Would you encourage, be neutral, discourage or impede your partner from making the exchange, if it happened to your partner?
