This is a bit misleading. Turia Pitt had been dating Michael Hoskin for about two years before she was badly burned in an ultramarathon in 2011. He quit his job to care for her full time and they were engaged in 2015. Have two kids together, but not married yet.
Turia is an incredible badarse and Michael does seem to be a great partner, but they are not married and it’s a made-up quote.

She may still require medical treatments that wouldn’t be paid for if her income changes.

That too. Especially depending on the insurer.
[–]mysteriousdarkmoon5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Turia is Australian, the injuries were from a fire during an ultra marathon. The whole ‘gabbing yo worry about medical insurance’ isn’t that big of a thing here.

Yes, I know, I originally posted that info. More in that she wasn’t personally insured, and needed to access the policy of the HK-based planners. Medicare will only get you so far when it comes to plastic surgery and skin reconstruction.

I think it’s because she’s so frigging busy with publishing books and speaking engagements, in addition to the physical therapy and the lawsuit with the ultramarathon planners.
She’s said before that she was trying to get pregnant ASAP due to the trauma her body has gone through, and then she had back to back pregnancies. This is probably the exception where the woman is moving at her own pace and to her own schedule.

Australia does have defined rights and security for de facto relationships though, where you can make claims on property and earnings following a break up, taxes are as a family and other protections. I’d say she’s the high earner in this relationship too.

I believe HV people who love each other can commit for life without marriage, but I also believe it is extremely rare. Maybe they are one of the few exceptions to the usual rules. Giving the benefit of the doubt here of course.
[–]ResponsibleCharacterPickmeisha™️10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think these two have the potential to be the exception, because of the strength of character he's shown by supporting her through her nightmare and recovery. But for the rest of us: marriage or yeet that fool into the fucking trash, especially if you're even CONSIDERING pregnancy.
[–]smolcontrolledburstsFDS Newbie15 points16 points17 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Or the thought of a wedding makes their blood run cold. The married part is fine, but nope to being the centre of attention.
[–]KendraSays3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Wtf is this logic. I have a friend who doesn't believe in marriage and wants kids, but she'd definitely values her partners. Her family members also have relationships that have lasted longer than most marriages but dont want to get married. While I would want to get married, there are plenty of people who don't, but that doesnt mean they can't love and build families with their SO
[–]user_name_taken-FDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Idk I had 3 kids before marriage and he was the one pushing to get married. I was young though and wanted my dream wedding and my dream house. I was the one who didn't let it happen. He would have been happy just going to the court house, but I wanted it to be perfect. I had absolutely no doubts about him. As far as I was concerned a piece of paper and a party wasn't going to change how we felt, it wasn't going to change our family, I still wanted it because I had this fantasy of how it was supposed to be but I didn't think it would really change anything. I had dreamed of my wedding since I was a kid and I didn't want to do it any other way. I was so secure in our relationship that I didn't think it made a difference but if we were gonna do it we were gonna do it right.
I was young and dumb though and regret my decision. Especially since he died. I know better now and won't make that mistake again, although I do still want my wedding. So while I agree waiting is not necessarily the smartest thing to do, I don't necessarily agree that it's always because one person has doubts. I didn't have any doubts. I was just young and naive.

My grandma was senile and disabled as a result of two brain surgeries. My grandpa took care of all of her medicine, insulin shots, food, and so on for years before she passed away. He was already well into his old age and didn't have to do it all alone, but he did it because he loved her.
You never have to settle for a man who you know wouldn't love you the same if the tables were turned and you suffered an illness or traumatic injury. You deserve to get back the same amount of love, effort, and respect that you're willing to put in.

Some of these men do exist, but boy do they seem like a rarity. So many men ditch relationships as soon as the going gets tough, and even when they don't actually leave the relationship, they often begin affairs because they "deserve it" for staying with a woman who is no longer perfect.
My ex-husband was so abusive that it resulted in actual severe physical illness for me, and once he'd gotten everything he could from me, he cleaned out the bank accounts and left me with literally no way to buy food and did so purposefully. The rage they get when women dare to be fucking human! You would have thought I had cheated on him with his brother for how badly he treated me for the "crime" of bad health.
Thankfully, I've got someone now who never ever guilts or shames me for needing his help. He comes home from work and immediately asks me what I want for dinner, and he makes whatever I want. He even remembers the exact way I like every meal, just stupid nitpicky preferences that I would do if I were the one cooking.
It's actually a little awkward for me sometimes because I'm so accustomed to waiting on my ex hand and foot, but now I feel like I'm sort of useless to my new guy. I feel guilty that the bad guy got so much from me, and the good guy has to pick up the pieces.

You're a queen and you deserve it. I would bet your man gets joy from giving to you like you may have (at one very distant time) to the NVM ex. Enjoy and show your appreciation, but don't ever feel like you have to be a wife/mom appliance to be loved by a man ❤

Your grandpa gives me hope as a Type 1 Diabetic. The idea of leaving my Diabetes care in the hands of nurses at the hospital is scary enough since they often don't know much about my insulin pump or Type 1 in general. I hope to be so blessed someday.
[–]WhoopassDietFDS Newbie7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Odds are pretty good most diabetics will have some kind of automatic system in the next decades. Or maybe someone will invent a cure.

The cost of an automatic system likely won't be covered by many insurers just like my insulin pump and it's supplies. But thanks for the optimism!! A cure would be delightful.

Yeah I saw a segment on Oprah where a woman jumped in front of an SUV, got ran over and became paralyzed to save her children’s lives and the husband left her smh. Never freaking settle. Right but to openly admit that you view that as an option..... regardless of the reality. Some guys get “overweight” clauses added to their prenups, so I guess nothing should surprise us anymore.

This is a fear for me. I have two autoimmune illnesses and I worry about that. I think if I had blown up after steroid treatment like a lot of people do, then both boyfriends would have left me. For some reason it hasn't put men off but that might change once I'm 50 or 60.

It's not a natural instinct thing, my mom's childhood friend was diagnosed pretty late for Multiple Sclerosis, at the time she wasn't diagnosed she partially, lost her vision and she was also attacked by wild Wolf her husband stayed with her throughout this. After the diagnosis it was ruled that she will probably never go back to normal her husband stayed, now she is completely on wheelchair her husband is still with her and as supportive as ever.

When I did clinicals as a CNA (required for nursing school) there was a woman at the long term care facility who had a brain aneurysm or something and she was brain damaged as a result. They did brain surgery on her and removed a piece of her skull because of brain swelling and she had a visible dent in her head. This all happened in another state and somehow she ended up in the care facility in my state. Not only did her husband follow her to my state, but he came and visited her every single day even though she could not speak, communicate, or show facial reactions that any of us saw. He would read to her every day and just talk about how life was going and carry on conversations with her in case she could fully comprehend everything but was just currently incapable of responding.
I don’t know how things ended up. I know she was set for another surgery but clinicals were done before it. Good, faithful men out there do exist. Abandoning someone because of a hardship isn’t an inherent male thing. It’s an inherent shitbag thing. If any man has left you be glad you’re rid of him and you can search for someone who isn’t a piece of shit now. We are not doomed to being alone if we are heterosexual. I refuse to settle because I know there are people that aren’t shitty out there. The losers want you to think their behavior is normal so they don’t have to be held responsible for it. I’m glad men like in the photo are getting applauded so these bums out here can see what a real man is and what’s to be expected of them.

As a former CNA, I had a patient with MS, and her husband made it a priority to stop by every single day and spend a couple hours with her, even when she wasn’t in the most pleasant of moods.
But if that ain’t love, I don’t know what is. 😭
[–]PooPooMeeksFDS Newbie42 points43 points44 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That’s great, and I’m sure her husband had a good influence at some time in his life to promote his good nature - I’m talking about if a man doesn’t have any good influences to TEACH him to act like this. My ex husband never had a Dad, his Mom was never around since she was constantly working to pay the bills. So in the end i realized that no one taught him how to be a proper man. No excuses for him of course, but when the chips were down, or was easier for him to ignore me rather than face the music.

It's not instinct though, it's something they've learned is okay behavior.
[–]PooPooMeeksFDS Newbie44 points45 points46 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I wish I could believe you, but I’ve met so many different men and heard so many selfish and inhumane stories of how they’ve abandoned and tested women, even when they don’t have fathers to learn from or hardly any male influences. And they all do the exact same things. Just like polygamy, when men do this it reflects the wild animal kingdom so much, it’s their natural instinct to wanna “dip their wick,” regardless of the consequences. If anything, I feel we have to ingrained proper “civilized” behavior in our male youth to not be these type of losers. I have a son right now, and he’s still young and a very good boy, but I’m starting to filter now before it’s too late. And it’s hard too because i don’t want him to become a mama’s boy LOL
[–]butterfree_zhuangziFDS Newbie52 points53 points54 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I respect your opinion. I do agree we need to ingrain "civilized" behavior and thought into men. My opinion is that society teaches men, not necessarily just close male influences. I believe it's a cop out when people blame biology. We are different from animals, we have free will. When men want to do the right thing they will, but often they've not even been taught what it means to do that. I'm not here to debate only to give my opinion. Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying and if that's the case I do apologize. It's all a big biopsychosocial mess.
Good luck in raising your son, I really believe you can raise a HVM with the way you seem to think and your participation here! I hope to be a good influence on my nephew as well.

Yep, totally 💯 agree with you. Like i said, my ex had no male influences except for a Sensei when he was a teen for a few months. I even thought he was slightly gay when we went out at first (yeah, that’s how needy and desperate i was, to still date him regardless LOL). Boy was I wrong! He had other loser guy friends telling him how to play women.

Almost 40 Years of pediatric nursing and I've seen dozens, if not hundreds of men just disappear when things get rough. Leaving the mom to shoulder the entire burden herself. Sure, there are some great dads out there (so save the 'not all men' comments please)

[–]PooPooMeeksFDS Newbie3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You stayed because that’s we women love too much. That’s not a bad thing, but unfortunately this world can’t handle it, because men use their aggression to rule. I had a boyfriend after my divorce and gave this LVM 4 years of my life too. I had a medical bout then too and he wasn’t all there for me neither. He took off the day of to take care of me, but that’s because of guilt(LONG story). But no extra days OF TLC, even when I felt vulnerable and said I needed him.

I was just thinking "Awww, he's good" then I thought: woah, that should be our minimal expectation, that you don't leave your wife when she gets an injury, or has something else that affects her appearance, like age or pregnancy.
We need to level up how seriously we take our wedding vows in this day and age, it boggles the mind that people can say "In sickness and health, til death do us part" and then be like, "But my wife got burned so nah."

Right, like he would look like a huge asshole and get his reputation trashed worldwide all over social media/google if he was to leave her, due to her celebrity status. And he might feel that no other woman would want to be with him after a 2 second search on google showed that he left her after she was disfigured. It might affect his job too, depending on what he does for work, and maybe his family relations, church, etc. Some people are extremely sensitive about their reputation and will do anything to preserve it, especially Christians from what I’ve seen (they will just cheat in secret).
