Why are men, at least in modern times, held to higher physical standards than women?

Women are told, ad nauseam, that no matter what they look like they are physically "ok", while the majority of men are told the opposite.

Women can at least wear makeup to cover up their physical flaws. Men's only options are plastic surgery or orthodontics, both of which are painful, expensive, and time consuming.

So, I guess what I'm asking is: what are those of us who can't afford plastic surgery or orthodontics supposed to do about our appearance? Wear a mask?

(I respect rule 5, but I'm going to write the following because I need to give some context about why I'm asking this question, disregard if you want.)

I've been the victim of life-long bullying, criticism, and out-right viciousness from the opposite sex regarding my physical appearance. Everything from my nose, to my height, to my eyes, to my cheeks, to my hands, to my chest. Everything. I've basically been a walking target for the opposite sex to take their day out on. It's not like I go out of my way to ask women's opinions (I've been a confirmed bachelor since I was 16, currently 24.)

Women have gone out of their way to demean me to make themselves feel better, and I know that this is the case for tens (if not hundreds) of millions of men worldwide.

tl;dr - Men are held to higher physical standards than women are these days. What are men who cannot afford plastic surgery or orthodontics supposed to do to fix our physical appearance?
