I think that deep down most of us aren't looking for advice but for the validation of our choices and desires. Despite all the feminist propaganda, most of us grew up in relatively traditional environments where gender roles were practiced by our parents to certain degree (women are still more likely to be the primary caretakers of their children) and casual sex for women was discouraged everywhere other than television (remember how many young girl were called sluts because they were rumored to be sexually active?). All these have a stronger influence on our attitudes than some stupid magazine.

When women become conflicted about what they saw in their families they might resort to anti-traditional advice to convince themselves that they're not wrong for rejecting the values they learned in their families. This is were Cosmopolitan makes bank. This magazine is first and foremost a business and its priority isn't the promotion of feminism, but making as much money as possible. They're not different from gentlemen magazines such as Playboy or any other product that appeals to your fears and desires to take money out of your pocket.

Sue Ellen Browder is no different. She made at least some money writing those articles because she got to eat. When she became uncomfortable writing about sexual liberation, she started writing against it. Traditionalism, just like sexual liberation, also has a market banking on women who need to reaffirm those values out if fear of being tempted by feminism or whatever it is that conflicts with their traditional worldview.

To answer your question, I think that when women follow any advice, they're already made a decision before they opened the magazine. Now, how many women read magazines like Cosmopolitan, not sure. Many read it just for entertainment.

Anyone with half a brain would know that Cosmo was was just entertainment pretending to be news and advice. I think people who do horoscopes are full of it but I don't expect them to feel guilty for lying, the readers have themselves to blame for believing it.

It seems like her whole complex originates from maybe contributing to abortion legalization. I think she's giving herself too much credit for that and all the "damage" she's supposedly done to girls over the years, she just rode a wave that would have carried on without her. Had she swapped Cosmo's content to something less affirming and cautioning it would have gone out of business and some other "go girl" magazine would have taken it's place.

That aside, there’s exactly two lies in there - making up authority figures to attribute “profound statements” to, and “inventing places” outside of NY to better color in anecdotes. Both would get anyone fired at a Hearst Publication today (which is Cosmo’s publisher)

That said, even Vanity Fair operates under a “remember Peoria” mantra - meaning, the writers need to step outside of their own lived experiences and write for a broader audience outside of NYC. That’s ... just good business, and good journalism

Outside of that, there is literally nothing that she talks about that is “fake news.” She’s just trying to shame her earlier self for writing about things she no longer believes in

I could never relate to cosmo as a teen/young adult. It just felt wrong- something that I knew I couldn’t jive with.

I will say that I do watch YouTube videos on makeup, skincare, and dressing for your body type though.

I do not watch political or feminism content.

No. Nobody has read a magazine in 25 years unless stuck at an airport and even then who knows.

Even when women actually read Cosmo maybe in the 80's or part of the 90's some of the articles were clearly ridiculous.

Sue Ellen Browder is flattering herself if she thinks she deeply influenced other women's thinking, I am not saying there are not feminists who did influence just that she is not one of them. She has nothing to deeply regret it is not as if her name is being whispered on the wind. She needs to get over herself.

I have never picked up a magazine like that in my life. No one I know under the age of 25 ever really read them. The only people I see looking at that kind of thing is women 40+.

I would seriously mistrust anyone that follows advice from cosmo. Their sex tips were clearly written by someone having a laugh but were peddled as being serious (sticking a donut over your man's willy and eating it or giving a handjob by using both hands and twisting them in opposite directions come to mind)

I do think there will be people who take magazines and things seriously but I don't think it's a huge percentage. Most people I know who buy them are looking more for trashy gossip or the fashion pages anyway.

Oh man I remember occasionally buying cosmo when I was in HS. Never bothered with it or any sort of MSM "dating advice" stuff after that.

Of course, I did not struggle with dating or getting the men I wanted at all. Had I experienced that type of struggle, maybe I would have sought after more of that type of advice.

Edit: if you're talking about "you go girl" type feminism stuff, I grew up at the height of that (the 90s and yes I still love the Spice Girls) but my take from that sort of social messaging didn't have anything to do with dating, it had to do with achieving or not being afraid to go after lofty goals, which I suppose may have had an effect on me but I've always been a high/overachiever anyway.

There is a big picture issue here, how media sets weird standards that no one can obtain, and if obtained just leads to basic misery but it's lost in your pointing fingers. We don't need to point fingers, we need to stop feeding it.
