I don't think this is a gendered issue at all. I think its because people like Demi Lovato more than they like Lil Peep. There were plenty of people talking about helping addicts after he died. Lovato is just a much bigger celebrity than Peep was.

I might be biased because I love Demi but I don't see why this is on this sub. There isn't a inequality here especially towards gender inequality. Demi has been dealing with this her entire life while lil peep I don't know much about his story but everyone I knew cared a hell of a lot more than when they heard Demi OD. But all that had nothing to do with gender inequality. Michael OD and it was the end of the world for a lot for people, in my perspective it's all about the influence you have over people. Michael had millions of followers and so did Demi it's no wonder why they had an effect like that. But lil peep didn't have a following like they did, so he didn't have as much of an impact.

In my opinion, the difference is that up until her public overdose, demi has been very open and vocal about her struggle with addiction and mental health and her recovery efforts. I don't know lil peep's story that well but from what I saw he glamorized & monetized drug use, the emo misunderstood bad boy image & and carelessly portrayed a dumb & reckless fuckboy.

I'm not a fan of demi but I know that she at least attempted to use her platform to encourage struggling addicts and others to seek help for their issues.

If you really want to compare apples to apples then look at worlds' reaction to Amy Winehouse's death vs. Lil peep. People saw the overdose coming a mile away.

Sigh, I think this is yet another one of those things I will stand alone on.

A large chunk of my family are alcoholics. I have interacted with drug addicts my whole life. There is no excuse, if you die of a drug overdose it's your own fault... and before you say "Yeah well, it was laced !" that's what reagent kits are for. If you're going to do something colossally stupid, at least make sure you're doing what you think you're doing, but preferably don't do it at all.

Using drugs is a choice... and I 100% understand the concept of addiction/withdrawal, believe me, I know how hard it is and my heart goes out to people going through opiate withdrawal... but there are places you go to , to get this done. Doing more drugs is never the solution and I see no reason to excuse such behavior.

As much as I sympathize with people who are struggling with mental health issues and addiction, I can't help but feel that celebrities have problems that are soaked in bourgeois sentimentality, if you know what I mean.

I really don't care that Demi can't stop doing cocaine. The fact that she's even in a position where she can lay around all day doing drugs, is a testament to her coddled position in life.

This isn't comparable. One person died from drug use, another person did not and went to rehab.

A more appropriate comparison would be, say, Lil Peep and Amy Winehouse. Both died from drug overdoses... how are men and women viewed differently as a result of that? Or how about Charlie Sheen and Courtney Love, both survived through drug addiction and rehab, etc etc... how are they seen differently?
