I am reminded of one organizer of an event in Portland, Maine held a few years back. Basically, women in the event were to walk through the downtown with their shirts-off, exposing their breasts, trying to make the point that they had 'freedom' to do so. Freedom, it seems, was all-important in her argument. But the same organizer, in an interview after the fact, complained that some men had the gall to look and even snap pictures. Golly, but don't they have the freedom to do that?

Such head-scratchers...

New?

[–]Demonspawn 24 points25 points26 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

New.

Under traditional society, men work hard to do what's necessary for society to survive, to support a woman they married, and are rewarded with family, offspring, and respect in society.

Under progressive society, men work hard to do what's necessary for society to survive, to support all women via proxy of government, and are shit on by having their families destroyed, their children taken from them, and society disrespects them constantly.

Ok, yer right. Under traditional society men were mules. They worked hard, but you took care of them because if you didn't they'd stop working. Under progressive society, men are ATMs. They're taken from constantly without any regard for their well-being.

[–]_Nces 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They worked hard, but you took care of them because if you didn't they'd stop working.

Not really. Most men eg in the 19th century had few rights. They could be shot just for trying to form a union. They certainly weren't "taken care of" in any meaningful sense. If they stopped working they would simply be replaced by other desperate workers.

If you're talking about eg 1950's America I agree with you. Men still had to do most of the dangerous, back-breaking labour but they were valued and respected. Then came second wave feminism and society began to unravel.

[–]Black_caped_man 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Ah yes, the paradox of extreme libertarianism. The more freedom you give people the more they have the ability to impose on the freedom of other people. The further to the extreme you go the closer you end up to the extreme of the opposing view. Quite interesting really.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Well, the operating principle seemed to be 'freedom for me, not for thee'

That's in the book alongside Rubber v Glue and Snooze v Lose, as I recall

[–]BookOfGQuan 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's how rules work in the context of tribalists (that is, most people, and all people who are prone to political manoeuvring). They bend and stretch the rules for their own gain, while loudly decrying any violation from others. Thus the nature of rules is to chain the competition, and to provide a means by which community aggression can be bought to bear against those who threaten one's security and prosperity, or that of one's in-group. Rules are considered paramount in spite of the individual's own sense that they are rightly an exception, because the absence of a framework of rules and implied communal punishment for their violation is equated with chaos and destruction. The tribalist majority bucks the rules at every opportunity, but holds them sacred and inviolable all the same, for purposes of their own sense of security.

Why do feminists and their ilk make such a huge deal over "shaming" while doing so much of it themselves? Well it's because they do so much of it themselves. It's their weapon; other people aren't allowed to use it on them. This is my knife - I use it to stab at you. Don't you dare commit the outrage of thinking you can use it to stab at me, I mean what is this?!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sounds about right

[–]ParanoidAgnostic 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not really. The ideal is that you have the freedom to do anything except interfere with the freedoms of others.

Women have the freedom to walk around naked in public.

Men have the freedom to look at them.

If you try to prevent women from walking around naked then you are interfering with their freedom. Therefore this is not a freedom you are granted.

If you try to prevent a man from looking at women who walk around naked in public then you are interfering with their freedom. Therefore this is not a freedom you are granted.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Freedom is your ability to have consequences imposed for your actions.

From the comments: Boys usually can't wear shorts and are forced to wear ties. Some schools even have a special comfortable summer uniform for girls, but not for boys. Equality is a one-way street.

Yep. When I was in Catholic school in Canada, we had to fight to get shorts approved in 30+ degree heat. Girls had their choice of shorts, skirts, and a short-sleeve shirt we didn't have access to. We also weren't allowed to roll up our fucking sleeves.

and claim discrimination.

Be bullied to death by classmates and the school more likely.

[–]eletheros 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Be bullied to death by classmates and the school more likely.

Only if done poorly. Outliers are bullied, but if 10-20 boys in a school all did it, it's like Halloween.

Honestly though, if I ran a school there would be a uniform, and it would be exactly the same uniform for both sexes.

Halter tops and skirts.

[–]tio1w 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The school will always bully them.

If there's critical mass maybe (emphasis on maybe) classmates will find it funny and jump on the bandwagon.

Not so with the school.

If the boys wore massive cod pieces wouldn't that distract the girls?

I'd like to see a resurgence (chortle) of cod pieces. "Don't tell me how to dress! Stop perving." "Hey, my eyes are waaaaay up here, sunshine." "It's not intimidating, I'm expressing my sexuality."

[–]ExpendableOne 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It honestly astonishes me how society has come to have such a negative reaction to people using the word slut to shame female sexuality, but still seem entirely fine or content with using the term pervert/creep for not only shaming male sexuality but outright vilify it as well.

[–]n883nnk 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Stop perv shaming!

[–]Black_caped_man 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

This is something I have been wishing for for ages! Not only because I find codpieces humorous but it's one of the few ways that a lot of women could actually understand what cleavage does. Sadly it would only work if the codpiece actually became an acceptable piece of clothing, which sadly probably won't happen.

Still, a man can dream.

[–]SirSkeptic 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was just looking at humorous codpieces in google - there's just so much scope for self expression there.

Colours, sizes, direction, shapes, materials (metal, leather, rubber, wood, velvet etc), there were ones with faces on the end, others shaped like animals.

This is good fodder for an instructional video. A group of men at a party wearing codpieces. A gorgeous women inquires about one and is given details and acceptance. A plain woman just looks down at one and is instantly chastised and criticized for perving. A large female security guard comes along and asks if this woman is bothering them. She's thrown out protesting: "If you don't want them looked at, why do you wear them?"

There's any number of punchlines to that question.

[–]Davethe3rd 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

it's one of the few ways that a lot of women could actually understand what cleavage does.

No, it doesn't.

Female sexuality doesn't work that way.

Men are distracted by cleavage because we're attracted to women that are fertile and of good breeding stock. Large breasts = fertility.

Women are more attracted to muscular chests and arms, so buff tall dudes in sleeveless shirts would have the same effect. Except it still wouldn't because testosterone != estrogen.

[–]kurtu5 -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also due to the nature of mamalian hypergamy, nearly every female is incredibly desireable to males. But few males are desirable to females.

[–]Tmomp 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

"Perv?" What exactly do they mean by this term? It sounds sexist to me. Why not call female behavior pervy? While I'm sure some boys do things that few would consider acceptable, so do girls. And many boys don't.

Is the article suggesting no girls do anything "pervy?" It sounds like they're catching all masculinity up with the term.

[–]garglemesh42 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Women do the same thing, but it is only pervy when men do it. Yay, double standards!

[–]caius_iulius_caesar -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When girls do it it's celebrating their sexuality.

[–]chavelah -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That was the point. Sending home a letter telling boys not to "perv" would have been sexist and offensive. Telling the girls that their bodies are "a distraction" and they need to wear Amish-thick hose to in order to be safe on the street is also sexist and offensive.

Dress codes like this cater to the weirdos in the group - the outlying girl who wears stripper skirts, the outlying boy who can't handle the sight of a female knee or collarbone. All the normal people suffer because of a few social retards who could be dealt with on an individual basis. And as other posters have pointed, schools with overly restrictive dress codes for girls typically have even more onerous standards for boys.

[–]_Nces 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the outlying boy who can't handle the sight of a female knee or collarbone

I've never come across such a boy. And I used to be one. I can tell you with great certainty however that all normal boys are immensely distracted by girls wearing revealing clothing. A welcome distraction, but a distraction nonetheless.

[–]boringcarpets -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've always found that a weird term. Perv, meaning perverted:

To lead (someone) away from what is considered natural or acceptable.

sexually abnormal and unacceptable

So, really, a heterosexual male being sexually attracted to a female would be far from perverted, in fact it's par for the course. If a boy (or girl) had designs on the class hamster however....

http://www.amnation.com/vfr/archives/011225.html

The way many women dress today, with half their breasts exposed, is an expression of total disrespect for men. Men are left with three possible responses. To grab the woman, which is illegal; to ogle the woman, which is socially unacceptable; or to affect not to notice the woman at all, which is emasculating. A culture that normalizes such female behavior—i.e. not only not noticing or objecting to it, but prohibiting any objection to it—is extremely sick.

This touches on the basic fact that men, as men, are ineradicably interested in the sight of semi-denuded women. This is so basic to what men are that to disregard it is an open challenge to his status as a man, forcing him to pretend at being something other than what he is, compelling him to assent by his silence to an obvious lie. Men do not walk around half-naked precisely because it is obscene, and because women are not interested in seeing them dressed that way. For women to pretend there is no sexual component to dressing in ways so revealing that they go far beyond what is even practical or comfortable, is really just a quintessentially feminine, passive-aggressive kind of power play.

It seems to me that women dress this way specifically in order to tease and intimidate men. It’s as though they’re saying, “just look at what you can’t have. That’s right, if you touch me you’ll be criminally prosecuted, if you stare at me or make catcalls you’ll be considered rude and beyond the bounds of decency, so you just have to sit there being tantalized, squirming in your seat and pretending not to notice, and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it!” This then increases their sexual power over men and their social standing vis-a-vis men, since they know that many men follow their instincts and can’t help but go out of their way to please or defer to an attractive woman.

This explains why feminists, who were formerly so enraged about women being seen as “sexual objects,” go into a fit of hysteria whenever someone criticizes women’s revealing attire. They know it’s a way for women to challenge and intimidate men.

The intimidation that Mr. McLaughlin refers to is but another variation on the standard intimidation that has used since the Sixties to silence anyone who would protest any aspect of sexual liberation: “You’re uptight. You’ve got a problem with sex.” No human being wants to be told this, and so the liberationist culture has a stranglehold on those who would even think of criticizing it. Further, as Mr. M. points out, it is pitiful that Peter Hitchens, a middle-aged, well-established, “conservative,” and at least nominally Christian writer, feels compelled to rush to assure his readers that he personally has no problem with women going around half naked in public and in fact rejoices at the sight.

This shows how EVERYONE today, including virtually all “conservatives,” are under the sway of the liberal culture and do not stand on an independent ground from which they feel able to criticize it.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

TIL that keeping your cool at the sight of some cleavage is "emasculating." All these years I thought was normal social behavior that didn't present any particular challenge.

Jesus Christ. Why are the tradcons so sexually dysfunctional? And why do they think I'd select my outfits with an eye to coddling their neuroses?

[–]casusbelli1 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You're right, women should dress however they like. If, however, what you're wearing is an unambiguous advertisement of your sexual availability, I'm going to look, with no apologies.

Got your tits out? Great, I'm staring at them.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't display my figure if I didn't like being looked at, but I really doubt you stand there and ogle women to the point that they you make them uncomfortable. I also doubt that you find tits to be a crippling distraction from your daily tasks, or that you'd reach out and grab them if only it were legal.

ETA: And I also doubt that you confuse willingness to be considered attractive with actual sexual availability.

[–]casusbelli1 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't much care whether or not my gaze causes women discomfort. And that's my point. Wear what you want, and we'll look where we want.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have occasionally stared at a stranger to the point where they noticed my fixation. I felt embarrassed by my social breach. This is not a female reaction - it'a the reaction of a person who raised not to be a total asshole.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why does a woman have to dress ‘modestly’ so long as she looks professional? And what’s wrong with 20 denier?

Dressing modestly is professional. If you aren't dressed modestly, you are not dressed professionally. Unless you're an underwear model or something.

or told to cross our legs so we didn’t show our underwear in our skirts.

The horror... clearly underage girls should be taught that it's totally fine to spread their legs open while wearing skirts.

And I'm sure a boy wearing a kilt doing the same wouldn't be told to not do that...

We didn’t feel like we’d done anything wrong

There's that useless word...

If schools want to ensure that the next generation grow up without damaging stereotypes, they need to stop demanding that girls start covering up at the first sign of puberty - or before.

That's funny to me, as I remember in middle school a boy being sent home because he was wearing a muscle shirt and the reason for it is that boys going through puberty are smelly, and starting to become hairy and it's a distraction.

[–]Sinsilenc -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The only issue i see with that is women in a professional area still have a hell of alot more freedom to dress as they choose.

[–]Funcuz 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, why even tell the girls to wear anything at all ? I mean it's obviously too restrictive and boys have no right to be distracted by naked girls so let's just do away with the middleman.

Somebody missed the point of dress codes and uniforms.

[–]TheDude41 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Good god, I wish there were more all-boys schools so I could protect my children against these monstrous school administrators and teachers.

[–]chavelah 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

The stuff that happens at all-boys schools is different, but not necessarily better.

[–]TheDude41 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

You're right. Some of those all-boys schools have a traditionalist background where boys are taught to treat girls & women in a manner that is "special."

To be avoided. We need new all-boys schools.

[–]chavelah -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I was thinking more about the catamite culture, but that sort of goes hand-in-hand with the culture of making girls "special" and thus unapproachable.

[–]TheDude41 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

If news articles are any indication, in schools, female pederasts are far more common than male pederasts.

[–]chavelah -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

News articles aren't. The mainstream media doesn't care about male-on-male-exploitation. Whether it's a group home for unfortunate boys or a boarding school for extremely privileged ones, depriving young males of access to women leads to the youngest, most androgynous ones getting sodomized. (Homosexual behavior at girls' schools is also a chronic issue, but it tends to take place among age peers and is taken even less seriously, if that's possible.)

[–]TheDude41 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

LOL. Wierd fantasy world you live in. Get real.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Go talk to a man who has survived a single-sex group home or boarding school. I work with many of the former group and went to college with many of the latter. Failing that, read any of the hundreds of memoirs. When you lock boys up together, the older ones get sexually aggressive with the younger ones. So if you want your sons to go to an all-boys school, pick a day school.

[–]TheDude41 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Who said anything about boarding school?

Boarding school is where people send kids who are seriously fucked up.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You'd think so, but no. Normal children of both sexes wind up in residential schools because they are in foster care, or because they are Richie Rich and that's the family tradition.

Day schools that are single-sex are available in most urban areas, but most of them are Catholic schools.

You can't unlearn natural biologically driven behavior. Young boys don't perv for malicious intent it's because they're going through biological changes that they can't control. Girls have every capability to control what they wear who is the one being unreasonable and selfish in this situation?

Girls and women dress more revealing and sexually on the two or three days around ovulation.

There is plenty of biologically driven behaviour that can be channeled and this is valuable to learn.

Women and Girls outfit choice is not limited to attracting partners they also do it as a means of peer competition. Who has the best look and outfit who looks the best in x style etc. Regardless dressing how you want is a privilege afforded to students; if they abuse the privilege then they deserve to have it revoked. You can't break a rule and then turn around and say "Well it was a stupid rule." That's not how society functions. Honestly uniforms are the best answer to this problem; it removes the stress from both males and females when it comes to fashion and competition.

This problem exists because we afford too much freedom to children in an environment where they are there to work and learn. I'm not suggesting that schools be draconian by any means however I am suggesting that a change in policy would be beneficial. When students break a rule and take advantage of a privilege that privilege should be revoked.

Gee, should I cover my hair as well? Are short sleeves OK, or do I need to make sure to obscure the shape of my sexy sexy elbows?

Or should I maybe just walk through life unconcerned about teenagers popping boners in my wake, because it does no harm at all to me or to them?

Clearly the type of violations I'm taking about are the ones that are extreme. All these girls are doing is breaking a school rule and blaming boys for it. It's not the boys' fault that the system exists; it's not some secret sexist society that enacted the rules. Dress codes are just as strict for boys but they have fewer options in clothing than girls do. I don't see boys complaining. Wearing whatever you want is not important for a child's academic success. Wearing what you want is a privilege for children not a right. When you violate that privileged or take advantage of it you get it taken away. Plain and simple.

I see boys complaining - probably because I am raising boys. Oxford shirts and tights are both stupid and pointless, yet incredibly common, features of academic dress codes. They don't complain in December, but by the middle of May they are getting fairly bitchy.

Often girls are afforded alternate uniforms to wear during the warmer times of year whereas boys are not. Not sure if that's the case for your sons though! Even so you don't hear boys complaining to the extent that girls are about a minor issue that really shouldn't have any place in an academic environment. I mean for god sake these girls actively protested over wearing a layer of clothing. That's idiotic.

I am pro school uniforms.

I always found it weird that some kids would compete over having better clothes. Also school uniforms look cool and they create a sense of unity between the pupils of the same school.

Also with school uniforms, you can't dress too modest or too revealing, since there is only one type of clothing.

Also boys look at girls, that's just a fact. If people can't take that, they should probably live in a monastery.

Also I know that some girls in Japan roll up the skirts a little to make it shorter and be more revealing. If that goes too far, I can understand that this would be seen as wrong.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Japan? Try Baltimore. The only Catholic schoolgirls I knew who didn't roll their skirts were obese and trying to hide their thighs.

It's harmless. The adults (mostly women and male fundies) who make a huge issue out of it are damaged goods, pathologizing adolescent female display and adolescent male response. It's normal.

I have no problem with them rolling their skirts, I wouldn't even mind if they walked around butt naked.

But I can understand that a school must enforce rules, if the girls take it too far. What "too far" means can be debated, but one obvious rule would probably be that underwear should not be visible when sitting.

If the feminist movement had any consistency, their stance on that would be "instead of telling boys what not to wear, how about we tell girls not to be sluts instead!". Calling teen men perverts and shaming them for their sexuality should not be an acceptable response. You don't want modesty to be imposed on those teenage women? Fine, but then just say "modesty shouldn't have to be imposed on teens" instead of "teach boys not to look at them or want to have sex with them, because that makes them predators if they do and women are oppressed by men being sexually interested in them". That kind of reasoning is all kinds of fucked up, and it is sexism too.

Boys are not perverts.

It's the girls that get distracted by fashion. Who's wearing what? Red carpet events? Fashion magazines? All are female dominated interests.

Uniforms and dress codes prevent girls from getting distracted with fashion competitiions and female bullying.

Stop using boys like this.

Women dressing immodestly is the female equivalent of perving.

[–]Rethgil 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This has always been such a total hypocrisy of feminism. Needs to be highlighted and changed.

[–]doomsought -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Clothing is a form of communication. Immodest dress is a signal for sexual availability. We don't want students screaming "FUCK ME!" at the top of their lungs during class, why should we let them do it with their cloths.

[–]Black_caped_man 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This isn't really a sentiment I fully agree with. It's more like it signals "look at me and be aroused" than actually saying "fuck me". It asks for sexual attention not necessarily sexual action.
