Remember when the new movie (Birds of Prey) came out which had a female director, and thus portraying what we call the "female gaze" where the character was allowed to let her personality shine more and not appear sexualized even through she was wearing the same clothes and acted almost the same, people (men lol) started saying that the movie was ruined due to feminist agenda and "ruining her sex appeal to men". They also used that as an excuse to explain why men didn't watch the movie. Is this not a classical example of male depravity? 🙄 "Oh the mc is a woman but she isn't modelled for men to only be staring at her boobs and has an actual interesting personality? wow feminist agenda".

When a woman (either in fiction or reality) embodies a role that reinforces her own oppression and subjugation, this is seen as sexy to a certain type of man. When a woman (either in fiction or reality) embodies her humanity, independence, and capabilities, those same men claim that very same woman is no longer desirable.

I think Captain Marvel was the first movie in the action genre that blew my mind WIDE fucking open by showing me what a film looks like when the creators actively protect the visuals or characters from centering male-gaze or pleasing a male audience. Once you see it in this film you can’t un-see it.

So many examples: The coverage/tightness/sheerness of Carol’s clothes, the specific way fight scenes are choreographed, how often the camera lingers on her face versus her body, how often the director chooses shots of spectators agog at Carol’s beauty versus at her skills/powers. The relationships with her two supporting male characters are strictly & definitively platonic the entire time (neither of them even attempts to hit on her!!!). Carol’s main “loves” of the story are her female best friend and her female mentor and her female best friend’s daughter. That love is enough. She is not wistful or incomplete or bitter. She finishes the film truly empowered from within, her life has meaning and purpose and love. 💕💕💕

(Also small sidebar that I love is how for her PR tour for the film, Brie Larson specifically hand-picked a disabled woman of color journalist to be her interviewer for her Marie Claire spread! True queen shit.)

I absolutely love Harley Quinn's personal growth. It is pretty powerful that a character is going away from her abuser and abusive relationship and taking her own life back in control. In some way she is a role model and I hope she inspires people to do the same.

There's a great film analysis dissecting all the ways this film is so brilliant and underrated. One of the things that hit me hard was it pointed out how in this film, the villian/predator/depraved P.O.S. wasn't some cunning intelligent mastermind just a lowly scum bag. That's what most abusers are in real life...not these criminal geniuses so many films make them out to be.

I LOVE Harley even more now that she is no longer being abused by a dirty old psychotic man. Her personal growth and her reflection on her abusive relationship is nice to see, and watching her come into her own is so refreshing. I've actually started enjoying her more now.

That cartoon showing, I think it's, the female DC characters as teen girls or something--even they're presented in a sexualized manner.

I love shows like Monk and I used to like the Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch. But I was thinking if there were shows that were the female equivalent of those characters or The Good Doctor would everyone love those characters and empathize with them and have compassion on them as much? Or would they just think those female characters are annoying b******?

Oh I love the new direction that's being taken with her character.

It's just the male gazey fanservicey outfits she wears. (Her OG outfit was the best)

Unless they have a comic where Joker or Batman are wearing fishnets and corsets with their ass hanging out I aiiiiin't having it!!
