I'm sticking to Leslie and Ben from Parks and Recreation. Maybe because me and my partner literally work in the same fields as they do, haha

From what I remember of the show, Leslie and Ben were definitely a much better couple than Jim and Pam-- by a long shot.

Wow. I am just coming to this realization now. I really did hold them up as an ideal couple. But he only proposed after he impregnated her and at a gas station. Plus there was a weird vibe where all these beautiful women threw themselves at him and he was supposedly the prize. Yup, another fictional ideal couple out the window. How many are there left now?

Jim got with Amy Adams, Rashida Jones AND Jenna Fischer all with that bowl cut and that horrendous attitude? It’s just not realistic...
[–]skyerippaFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I actually thought it was unrealistic that he would pick Jenna over both of them, they're both gorgeous. Jenna is pretty but theyre on another level
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Pam was also a bit of a Pick Me in the sense that she joined in on Jim’s trashiness and immaturity. If ever I had a boyfriend like that, I would have told him to grow the fuck up.
[–]MarriedWithPizzaFDS Disciple5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Can we please not assume all women are supposed to think like this? I actually thought Jim was perfectly fine as a human being. Making mistakes and trying to fix them? Yes he proposed to her after she was pregnant, but In the show he literally said he bought the ring the same week they started dating. I love being silly and not letting life take your inner child like behavior. I didn’t think Pam was a pick-meisha at all. She was just as silly as Jim was. Can we please accept that not everyone is the same, and some people like different things and we don’t want serious men all the time, too?! I think sometimes we assume women are being pick-me just because they don’t have the same views as we do. Pam was always nice to all the women around her, and she spoke against her crappy ex-fiancé. Just saying. And I’m totally open to discuss how Jim is not a HVM, although I do view him as one.
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You’re aware that you can be silly without harassing someone and overstepping their boundaries? I’m friends with standup comedians so I know what it’s like to hang out with brilliant, hilarious people who aren’t trash.
If someone doesn’t like being pranked (hell, I know a woman who HATES hugs), you respect that and you stop. Lots of people don’t like pranks. You don’t need to question it, you respect that person’s wishes. How hard is that to figure out?
[–]MarriedWithPizzaFDS Disciple1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I mean Dwight not only harassed everyone at the office, but he is the ultimate white men that likes to talk about instinct to excuse his sexist behavior, or you know murder someone’s cat. We love to make fun of men that are like that in real life. So I honestly have zero pity feelings over pranks being done to him in that show. Or how Michael is exactly like trump, but very naive, and yet everyone seems to love him. All those characters are extremely flawed, like human beings, and yet likable because even though they would suck to meet in real life, they aren’t exactly bad people. My issue is when we start calling women pick-meisha just because what they like isn’t what we like, and how dare they enjoy whatever it is that they like. I have been seeing this more and more in this page, it is slowly becoming women-hating acceptable. We get enough of that with shitty men. Let’s be nice to each other even if it is on fictional women characters.
[–]EclecticBarbarellaFDS Disciple113 points114 points115 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I haven’t seen much of this show, but from what I’ve seen, Jim and Pam are not relationship goals and the one time I tried OLD I swiped left on any guy that mentioned the office in his profile (I didn’t find it funny, and shows are not a personality trait)
[–]SansaDeservedBetterFDS Newbie[S] 112 points113 points114 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The episodes where Jim left to start a business in Philadelphia (that he didn’t consult Pam about) where he left her home alone with two babies and she was losing her mind doing everything. The kids got lice at school and spread it to Pam, who spread it to everyone in the office and they all were mad at Pam. That storyline was very r/breakingmom.
He also bought his childhood house without asking her or getting her permission so she was stuck living in Jim’s parents weird house.

(SPOILERS)
At the end though, didn't she also buy a house without his permission? The point still stands though.

Jim Halpert is one of the most LVM in television history, no one can change my mind.
Growing up is realizing that Jim was the villain and Dwight was just a quircky weirdo who worked hard everyday, and loved his job even though he went to work everyday to be tortured by his co-worker’s harmful “pranks”.

I also forgot he took Amy Adams’ character on a boat cruise, then dumped her in the middle of it, ignored her and treated her like trash.
Just look at how Pam told him about her going to art school for the summer versus what he did about started a company in Philadephia and that’s all you need to know about his character.
[–]typeadhdFDS Newbie26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Honestly what he did to Karen and how he treated her was automatic low value for me

There was fan speculation that he was actually cheating on Pam and in that episode where the woman was in his hotel room, he only “tried to get rid of her” for the cameras

Ew...
Dwight slept with a woman that was in a relationship and he had his own pranks that fortunately backfired.

You’re right. I admit I haven’t watched the show in years, but I just really hate Jim Halpert because he’s framed as the hero of the show who is always in the right and it irks me to no end.

Honestly, I realised that Dwight worked hard to level up and it was wholesome to watch. Jim is so lazy and low value, proposed at a gas station ffs
The scene when Michael learns how Jim proposed and he was SOOO disappointed in him 🤣🤣🤣

I forgot he proposed at a damn gas station smdh. He also did the “fake out” proposals a few times by getting down on one knee to tie his shoes in front of Pam because he knew she was expecting to be proposed to. You know, since she was already pregnant.

Felt the same way. Workaholics is pretty much a spin off of Jim's personality.

The idea of soulmates is such a pernicious lie that I can’t stand anyone who perpetuates it.
[–]Dontstopmenow2021FDS Newbie11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I came here to say that! Soul what? My soul is whole!
[–]im_not_a_panda_FDS Newbie29 points30 points31 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Huh. I do believe in soulmates but I feel like very very very few people are lucky enough to find their soulmate. As in, 1 in every 50,000 couples are soulmates. All other couples are just happy together and making it work, but they aren't really in love.

This thread might be interesting to you:
https://www.reddit.com/r/FemaleDatingStrategy/comments/gg8d24/am_i_naive_for_thinking_that_soulmates_exist/
I see soulmates as just a worse more intense version of crushes, which fds is really against.
I think the worst part of soulmates is that if you’re not that 1 in 50,000 (or whatever the statistic may be), then what happens when you settle down with your non-soulmate and then he runs into his soulmate???
That’s why I don’t believe it, because I don’t believe that’s a possibility. I believe you’re highly compatible with multiple people and the grass is greener where you water it. i.e. whoever I marry should be putting 100% of their romantic energy into the relationship and therefore no one better could come along.
If no one better could come along, because no one could replace what we’ve built and are committed to, then does that mean we’re soulmates? I don’t think so. But maybe your definition of soulmate is different.

Could you go more in depth? I love character analyses. I actually watched some of The Office for the first time recently. Stopped when it got to their wedding though, that was the worst.

I feel you, currently watching Sex and the City and just Ugh, I wish the scenes were only of the 4 women. I hate every man they bring out, also watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer again and I loathe Angel with a passion, fucking 200 yr old sicko perving on a 15 yr old. Every time they try to make him seem "sexy" I wanna beat the shit out of him. Watching shows and films after FDS has made me even less tolerable of NVM and the propaganda thrown at women.
[–]oh_shit_oh_fuckFDS Newbie26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yes! I was talking about this on WGTOW recently. I used to watch Scrubs a lot, it was one of my faves but watching it post-FDS has been a complete game changer. It’s really damn hard to root for male characters I used to really like these days. Or even when I watch anything new for that matter.
[–]SuitablePerformance3FDS Newbie17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yep any time I watch something I just immediately notice how the plot treats women, how the character interact and I check out a little bit.
[–]jargon_explosionFDS Newbie23 points24 points25 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Honestly all of Buffy's relationships are bad. Angel is super creepy, Riley is incredibly insecure, and Spike is aggressive and an attempted rapist. She's too strong willed for any of them and is never fully appreciated by a partner. The closest was Angel, but yeah, he was creepy.
I also super hated Xander and he never improves throughout the show. Xander somehow gets these amazing women to fall in love with him and then sabotages his relationships at every turn. They give up so much for him and as a thank you he betrays them in the worst of ways.
I love the show but I have never not hated Xander while watching it, even before FDS. I just couldn't exactly explain why before.
[–]daisy_0720FDS Disciple24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I was SO happy that Buffy ended the series single, saying she needed to figure out who SHE was going to become before thinking about a relationship. It was such a refreshing message amid the endless TV shows that make their finale all about 'Which dude will Female Character end up with in the finale'? (Because God forbid a relationship isn't the most defining aspect of a woman's journey).
I absolutely adore Buffy (the character and the show) but it does have its problematic moments. 90% of the show could be summarized as "Buffy is a goddamn queen and deserves better than this shit."
[–]wolf_townPickmeisha™️6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
At the end of all these shows both options end up being terrible. Every time I think about the ending of Felicity I get mad all over again 😤
[–]huevos_and_whiskeyFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Thank 👏 you 👏 !
I recently saw something about the Angel/Spike debate... apparently Stacy Abrams made a comment about it? So it’s back in the news, and none of these little fluff piece journalists seem to get that all of Buffy’s relationships were toxic (if not downright abusive) and no one should be “shipping” any of them.
[–]jargon_explosionFDS Newbie7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yes they were all garbage. I don't know how anyone would ship any. But then again, some women thought the guy in "You" just needed love, so...
The character with the most equal relationships was Willow by far. There was a lot of mutual respect and understanding in all of her relationships. No one making any huge unrequited sacrifices and neither trying to change the other.
After I rewatched it recently, I actually noticed that they displayed a lot of stereotypes through the mythical aspect of the show too.
Angel loses his soul after they sleep together -- the idea that a guy turns bad after he gets sex. Oz is unable to control himself around another werewolf and sleeps with her -- men have an animalistic side that they are unable to control and will cheat if given the chance. Spike gets his soul back after the attempted rape -- to get the love of a woman, a man will change.
[–]huevos_and_whiskeyFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, the metaphor and symbolism in that show is fantastic (no pun intended) and works on many levels. I see something new every time I watch it. It took me rewatching it in adulthood to understand that Buffy’s relationships are more of a cautionary tale than goals. Even though I’ll always love the show, I think it could be somewhat damaging to younger girls who watch it (for example I was 11 or 12 when season 1 aired, and kind of grew up with the show. In hindsight I don’t think that age group is mature enough to understand not to emulate the main character’s mistakes, especially when the consequences of those mistakes played out over several episodes, so watching one episode weekly it could be months before the message hits home.)
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie27 points28 points29 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I was very late on watching The Office (a good decade late) and I wondered why Jim and Pam were rElAtIoNsHiP gOaLs. Some fans had even pointed out the immense amount of white privilege they exhibited. Jim constantly slacking off, harassing his eccentric coworker on a regular basis, and still being able to keep his job. Didn’t he get promoted at some point too? Pam was trash herself. Just because she wore cardigans and looked plain, it doesn’t mean she was sweet and innocent. She was enabling Jim and even joining in on taunting Dwight instead of defending him and telling Jim to knock it off.
[–]HennyyenniFDS Apprentice0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I mean didn’t Dwight almost shoot Andy in the face when he bought a GUN into the office? Jim and Pam weren’t perfect but Dwight should have been fired once he started calling out people’s medical conditions in front of everyone in the office. He also staged a fake fire that led to an employee getting a heart attack. Come on now.
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
I don’t remember the episode where Dwight brought a gun. However, Dwight and Angela were not rElAtiOnsHiP goAls and Dwight is not seen as better than he actually is. Considering that he was dangerous, the smart thing for Jim to do would be to leave him alone and NOT provoke him.
[–]HennyyenniFDS Apprentice0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That’s true. The Dwight gun incident was when he was promoted to manager after Michael left and will Ferrell died. Yes I watch the office way tooo much
