Honestly I rather find a women’s only gym or women only programs if available. Especially for swimming. Things are not open yet but I used to go to women only swim timings. It’s just a different atmosphere and a lot easier to even meet and talk to other women. I find I am and other women are always on guard whereas we can let our guard down more in these spaces.

I do subscribe to the theory that wealthier, higher status men will act less LV in public. That really has less to do with their moral character and respectfulness of women, and more to do with the fact that they have to maintain a reputation/persona. So they could very well be LV behind closed doors but are less likely to act upon those base instincts in public, hence less catcalling and harassment.

I understand this. I assume OP is in the US ( Aussie here) and didn't realise that there were different levels of gyms in the US.

In Australia, there are two major fitness chains. Both are decent and you can feel safe as a woman.

When I was in the US studying, I was checking out gyms and the cheapo gyms were full of...sorry... hate to say this... trashy people. When I say trashy people, I will defer to men. All the women were focused on themselves. But there was an element of quasi-criminal gym bros with tatts who likes to dominate the weights section and give you epic attitude if you ventured into that particular space.

I don't mean to be classist - but this what I observed.

Edit: I see a lot of replies saying "a higher value man doesn't mean money". This is truth. But in a gym environment, men who are somewhat educated understand to pretend basic decency and don't creep on women. Simply because they know the repurcussion would limit them and they don't want an altercation. Also, they are smart enough to know the gym has cameras and they can't get away with it.

The consequences of acting like a dickbag in a fancy gym is too high. This is the key reason they won't creep on women. ( not because they actually care if the women is upset/intimidated. )

I’ve had this experience as well. I’m not going to speculate about the reasons, because some other comments make good points, but whatever the reasons the end result for me was a much more pleasant gym experience.

Unrelated to men at all, a nicer gym will just be a happier place to exist in. Mine has little wine fridges all over with cool damp towels and plays nice music and generally feels like spa. Also free tea, coffee, and snacks. It’s had a great impact on my overall fitness.

Also, my gym is pretty focused on classes rather than solo workouts. I think this contributes to a maybe 80% female clientele (for some reason in my experience women are more into classes than men). So even if the men are LV, they feel outnumbered compared to at a more basic gym. Maybe this gets them to act better. Even more so if they’re the only dude in something like a yoga class, where most of the women there are more advanced than them.

I have a local gym membership that costs about $120 for the lowest end membership. It's not that there are fewer LV men, but rather that with the higher price tag, it means the people who do go are more committed, it's an intimate group, and we have a strong community spirit so LV behavior is very frowned upon. There's only about 150-200 members and it is about 80% women as well so people who share a similar schedule tend to know each other well and we look out for each other. The few men in attendance seem pleasant, but ultimately, even if they weren't, it's not like they'd have the opportunity to try something anyway.

I’ve heard this quite a lot so it’s probably true. However, I’m an introvert and would prefer to just use that money and invest in a personal gym at home.

I can attest to this as well.

I used to cheap out on gym memberships, dealt with a lot of harassment and incorrectly assumed all gyms were the same/similar.

The harassment and unwanted attention is significantly less in an expensive gym. I currently go to a high-end gym/recreational center that heavily markets to families (extensive gym day care, multiple kid's pools, etc) and the difference is quite extreme. I still get looks/approached, but the guys are not aggressive, and due to the family-oriented nature of the place, there is less of a 'meat market' vibe.

Before this gym, I went to simply a high-end gym (not a family-oriented place), and it definitely had a meat market vibe, but the men were way way less creepy and aggressive.

True to that - I've been literally told by a 40 year old scrote I shouldn't do pull ups because that's too "manly" in a cheap ass gym. Idk why he is he caring about what a 19yr is doing with her body anyway. In the more expensive gym I go to now there's more women and I love that fact.

I’m all for seeking out spaces where you feel respected and safe. For me, the solution has been to set up a home gym— squat rack, adjustable dumbbells, some bands and such. I also have a lovely yoga space I’ve made for myself. No waiting for a rack to be open, no concerns about what to wear, no unwelcome interactions. Of course not everyone is going to have the space and option, but if you do, it’s worth considering!

Prior to COVID, I belonged to one of those boutique gyms that specializes in HIIT (high intensity interval training). Membership at that gym cost almost $200/month, and I went to the 6am or 7am classes. At those prices, and that early in the morning, the men who were there were focused on the workout.

While I agree that men with money can be as creepy and as predatory as broke-a$$3d men, they have much more to lose by behaving that way in a public venue. While Mr. big-law associate, Mr. pediatric surgeon, and Mr. hedge fund manager are likely to surreptitiously take a peek as a woman's ass or cleavage between sets in a HIIT class, they will not stare creepily at you or do anything that would cause you to report them to the gym's management. They have too much reputationally at stake, and in the day and age of "me too" they know that if any such public misbehavior ended up on youtube they could be out of a job. Additionally, they have a wide range of pick-me who will audition for the role of their girlfriend due to their perceived wealth.

I've gone to 4 different gyms in my life. The bottom two least expensive gyms had the most scrotes, but the most expensive gym still had the same scrotes. It's like the illusion that other OLD apps are better than others; they're not because all the same guys are there. My LV ex worked out at both an expensive gym and then an inexpensive gym. They're everywhere, and the gym is where they go to exchange testosterone points with other bros so they can attract more women. The gym is a meat market for men. They do not care what you're wearing because it doesn't matter. I've done the whole baggy clothing thing too and guess what, my ass still shows through a long tshirt when I'm doing squats lol.

I literally almost bought a gym membership to a nice gym but decided against it due to the pandemic not being done yet here, predators at the gym who are aggressively horny for sex (the ones who stare you down and try to make direct eye contact with you), and because I can walk/run outside and do my other workouts at home. I have an active hobby for cardio and strengthening as well. I'm fit and I do it without a gym membership

I've found the places I don't get cat called or ogled tend to not have men there at all or very minimally. Such as Pilates and aerial yoga etc.

You could apply your mindset to literally anything else and it still doesn't hold. I've gone to fancy restaurants where we're spending at least $500 for two people type shit and literally had an old man come and harass me multiple times during my meal and the waiter informed me "he's a regular." So no, men with money will still treat you like a piece of property.

Lol you’re making it sound like men with money aren’t inherently low value or no value. Just because you go to a $200/month gym and meet wealthy men, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re “high value.”

You’ll experience male depravity literally everywhere you go. As someone who’s been to both the expensive gyms and the cheap gyms, a great majority of men are low value and will ogle women any chance they get.

You said you weren’t hit on or stared at this expensive gym of yours, then how did you meet these “very interesting men”? Are they blind and were they attracted to the sound of your voice? These men obviously started at you and were attracted to you, hence building a connection. Nobody gives anyone tickets to the MET for free, lmaoooo.

I like to work out at home I don't dare run in the park as it's always full of lads, and I live in the middle of a busy city. If I was a guy I'd totally go for a run in the early morning or night :(

I used to pay a premium for a women’s only gym but then moved countries and it’s only mixed gyms in my current country. Did join a nice hotel gym but men still ruined that. So now I dont bother going at all

I'm sorry but you are probably just blinded by their money and not seeing their LV behaviour because of that. Rich or poor it doesn't matter. You say poor men want to assert their dominance... How do you think most men who earn a lot got there? With politeness and honesty? No, by using people and asserting dominance. Money is not an indicator of value.

So far the only thing I found that somewhat works to filter LV men out of the gym is going super early. At 6 a.m, when mine opens, it's almost empty. All those who come at 6 a.m are here to get actual results and the gym is usually a pretty solid part of their routine (unless it's January, gyms are a LV men den in the first two weeks of January). Never had to deal with LV behaviour in that time slot, everyone does their own thing in their corner of the gym and we have a lot of space.
