As someone who's also terrified of fireworks, I'm so glad she stood her ground on this. Here's a quick recap of my last 2 new years eves not doing so:

2018: Told my then boyfriend I hate new year's eve and fireworks. He, as many before him is convinced that he's going to give me the best new year's eve experience I've ever had. So we took a bus across the country to some of his friends who I'd never met before. We didn't get along. At midnight he insisted I join them outside. They were in front of their house blowing shit up, I sat in the doorway covering my ears. Something fell over and shot right at me, flew above me into the house. I had a panic attack and we went to bed.

2019: Same boyfriend, promising that this year we're going to have a new years eve just how I want it!! Completely up to me. Somehow that translated to visiting his parents. The night was going okay, then midnight came. I wasn't allowed to stay inside their place alone so instead they went outside and I sat in the dark, empty stairwell covering my eyes and ears for an hour. I also got to be the designated driver and got to work the next day.

We were together for almost 3 years before I dumped his ass on Jan 2 2019. This year was the first new year's without anyone and I loved it. I told my employer about my fear of fireworks beforehand and got the day off. I baked fresh bread rolls and pastries, played some sims and stayed in my cozy, safe bed with the windows closed. Sorry, this got way longer than expected.

If this was a male veteran and a woman tried to set off fireworks suddenly men would care.

Why do they all use "walking on eggshells" to describe basic courtesy? My ex said the same thing when I told him not to call other women hot in front of me.

I hope she leaves him, he has no regard for her wellbeing or safety, what a complete imbicille. Personally I think public sale of fireworks should be banned and only organised displays with silent fireworks only allowed. They are really bad for wildlife, pets, people with autism and PTSD. We even had idiots post them through people's letter boxes in another part of my town at Halloween for a 'laugh'. They are really bad for birds. Also the fact he calls her selfish, just another example of gaslighting from a sick taumenting bastard.

An HVM would've compromised. Set off fireworks somewhere else and then come to ring in the new year with his family.

Or he could've been honest. "Hey babe, I'd love to set off fireworks but want to respect you. Can I get you a spa day and a hotel room? I will do my thing and then join you for ringing in the new year?"

Or he could just grow up.

He has no idea how many veterans are in his neighborhood who have IED-related PTSD. I've been around Iraqi war vets who freak the fuck out when they see flashing lights they were not anticipating. They cannot control their reactions. Can't we have some gd respect for our vets and just not have firework shows?
