I'll get this out of the way first - imo it's foolish to center your entire life around the moment of death. But if it's a fear that's pushing you into settling consider a few realities:

most women outlive thier husband's by at least five years, so you'll "die alone" anyway.

If you're one of the women who is actually outlived by her husband (congrats?) he will put you in a facility when you start to deteriorate. That's if he's a good person. That's if he won't abandon you (and many men will). Most men do not provide caregiving when their partners get sick. And even when they reluctantly do take care of their wives they aren't exactly doting on them with gentle love.

But let's just say your husband has good intentions and wants to make sure you're final years are comfortable. Often it's just impossible for elderly people to provide quality care for their spouses. So he'll end up hiring help anyway.

But what if you have kids? maybe you have extraordinary sons or maybe you have daughters. It's unlikely that they will drop their entire lives to move home and take care of you, no matter how much they love you. Even if they were willing to pause their lives for you, you probably won't want them showering you and helping you go to the bathroom etc. So again you'll end up hiring help anyway.

Which is why personal independent financial planning is so important. Banking on "love" and wedding vows is a horrible idea that is sold exclusively to women. Men know better. They know to prioritize money and insurance over promises of love. Take a page out of their book and do the same.

There's no guarantee that your kids or husband will look out for you in your final years or be at your deathbed like a Hallmark movie. It's sold to you as a way to keep you hostage and tied down to men. Anxiety about the future can be remedied by YOU and you only (you are the only one guaranteed to be there) so if it's really scaring you that much just take control now.

Trust me I know how difficult financial planning is (I suck at it 🙃). I've wasted so much money being silly and now I'm in my late 20s and scrambling to educate myself and catch up. If I could go back in time I would have started learning about finances when I was 20 instead of chasing fantasies of happily ever after with a man.
