They need to stop calling it privilege as if we are given a head start, instead of calling the others disadvantaged. Privilege is being born to millionaire parents, not just married parents. It's not a privilege to go to college. It costs time and money and effort to go to college. It's a privilege to NOT go to college and have free time and no student loans. Your gender isn't a privilege unless you are in the Middle East. Otherwise it is an excuse for failure instead of the actual reason.

For the school to ask students if they're white as a test question like this is an attack against those of part-European/part-Caucasian ancestry. It's like saying, "Which one are you? Pick a side." It's actually pretty racist.

Statistically it makes no sense to consider males privileged, especially in a school setting where boys earn lower grades than girls in all subjects. Even more ironic considering how most teachers are female, and studies now suggest female teachers give boys lower grades

Men are statistically behind for life:

less likely to attend university
conscription in many countries
higher pension ages in many countries
higher unemployment rate
more likely to be homeless
shorter life expectancy yet less funding for gender specific health research
less government resources available despite individual circumstances
harsher permanent in court system.

There's an amazing contradiction in the ideology behind this.

On one hand they claim single mothers are amazing and all family types are equally valid and great at raising kids. Meanwhile, they also claim an intact family is a "privilege" thus indicating it is the ideal environment for children to grow up in.

I'm sorry I've decided that education is important and started saving for his college fund. I'm sorry for buying a house in a low crime neighbourhood so my family can feel safe. Are you lucky if you were born into a stable white middle class family and you've never experienced racism, violence or other harassment? Maybe. Should you made to feel guilty for that fact? Fuck no.

Starting a conversation like this suggests that there is something inherently wrong with not being disadvantaged.

I'm all in favour of the school playing a video of kids living in Africa who can't afford clothes and then asking the kids if they can notice differences and allowing the kids to think organically about difference, forming their own ideas about whether they are better off than some other. But to ram it down kids' throats is likely to demonise them just for not being from a disadvantaged minority.

There's going to be some really messed up kids in a few year's time.

As a guy who actually works in a middle school, I can tell you that a good portion of students at that age will not understand most of those questions they are asking. Most of them are just now trying to figure out there hormones and maintain friendship with each other.

I like the concept of teachers talking to students about the possible advantages and disadvantages each student may face based on factors they have little to no control over. I don't even mind them using a questionnaire format, as long as the teacher followed up with a conversation to provide further context. However, in this case, I don't believe that this test was written with the best intent and information to help students understand broader social issues and discrimination.

Ideally, I'd hope that such an activity would help students recognize diversity and be able to sympathize with others, rather than reinforce negative stereotypes or support a victim mentality. What questions could best accomplish this task? I'm not entirely certain, but I'd be interested to see how this could be improved upon.

I don’t see how having intact families, and having money is a “privilege” isn’t it just that your parents worked really hard to get you the best life possible? If anything it should not be a privilege but a reward for your parents working hard, instead of getting pregnant to a random guy that your mom will never see again, and spending hundreds if not thousands of more hours in school studying to get a so called “privilege for you”.

I would like to be critical but constructive about an assumption behind this thread that recurs in MRM discussion fora and that I find misguided and counterproductive.

The privilege narrative is misguided; Hayek said that the idea that you can influence aggregate behaviour is a "fatal conceit" that may be attractive, but, when taken to its logical extent, will lead to tyranny.

But let us not fall into the rabbit hole of conflating men's issues with those of whites or heterosexuals. It is indeed still much easier to be white and heterosexual, but it was never easier to be a man than a woman (other things being equal).

My white privilege is everywhere. When I travel the Middle East as a policy consultant, I get credibility and goodwill that no Arab of my "rank" would get, while my Mexican colleague was openly mocked as Filipino and black Africans are outcasts. When I walk in a park at night behind a woman, she often turns around nervously, sees me, and is relieved. And, of course, as a white person from a rich country, I have had access to world-class education and got to attend a leading US university with a generous scholarship.

Conversely, as a gay man, I grew up hating myself to the core, surrounded by peers calling fags disgusting, pedophiles. A good 50% of my friends of that generation have experienced some kind of physical assault because of their sexuality, and once I was put out on the street when my bfs family found out we were together. Today it is much better, but even my gay friends frown at our wish to engage a surrogate, and even my gay colleague felt the need, as subtly as he could, to check up on me when his son insisted that we play in his room.

So to be honest, white and straight people should be able to take it. The world is more likely to be open to you, other things being equal.

In contrast, treating maleness in the same way is unconscionable. It is, after all, the gender most likely to die soon, experience violence, including domestic and, by some measures, sexual, suffer harsher punishment, lose access to family, or become homeless or otherwise dissociated from society. All factors that would apply to blacks more than whites.

Conflating these issues is what makes it still so easy to dismiss MRM, putting them in the same ballpark as white nationalists or evangelist right wingers worried about the dissolution of the family since the dawn of time. After all, that stereotypical disaffected low-skilled blue collar straight white man we are talking about, the one that lost his job in a WV coal mine, prompting his wife to leave him and the judge to award ridiculous child support payments - which factor (apart from lack of education) hurt him the most, his race, his sexuality, or his gender?

For me, the answer is obvious. But for those who honestly think he is a victim because he is white: perhaps we can at least agree to use this forum to discuss gender issues?
