It's a pretty slim chance for a US draft because we actually have pretty large numbers of active military right now.

However, you never know what the warmongers in Washington will do.

It's in the balance, if NATO does something right now I'd guess there'll be a significant but limited war in Eastern Europe that the USA would be able to provide its contribution to through voluntary service.

If they stall for time and China takes its chance to make a move on Taiwan while Russia expands further west then that's looking more like a global conflict and it could well be conscript armies all around at that point.

If they stall for time/abandon Ukraine Putin might be satisfied but that strategy hasn't ever actually worked...

This is a scary situation but i highly doubt it. The military even said they don’t want to ever enact the draft again. Draftees always make up the most casualties as they are poorly trained and just don’t want to be there

We have a large number of active military members and even more in the reserves. Not to mention if the US gets pulled into war there would be a large increase in voluntary enlistments. Then add in the rest of the western world that is on the same side, add in all their military power and it would be more than enough to cover the Russia situation

Now if China invaded Taiwan and both are going on at the same time, i still don’t think a draft would take place but that would be slightly more concerning

So in the end, a draft is incredibly unlikely

No. We aren't sending any conventional soldiers to Ukraine outside of a potential UN peacekeeper mission. (Which would be vetoed by Russia or China)

Only spec ops might be operating.

The military currently prides itself on being an all volunteer military. There are no plans on bringing the draft back unless it were dire for the country. At least that's how it wad 10 years ago.

The Selective Service would only reach out to you if the U.S. military experiences a sudden manpower shortage due to a catastrophic event (e.g. like a hostile alien invasion from outer space where everyone needs to fight). It would be something similar to the movies, Independence Day (1996) and The Tomorrow War (2021).

The other way the draft would return is if Congress passes a law bringing back conscription.

USMC combat veteran here. While selective service is still active in America, the chance of a draft happening again is very...VERY thin. We've moved away from conscription to replenish troop strength initially. Only in the circumstances that we ended up in a ground war on domestic or allied soil AND we'd suffered heavy losses (30% or more of our deployed fighting force) would a draft be enstated. We'd need to get our asses summarily handed to us for that to happen.

Could it? Yes. But we have most powerful standing military in the world. It would take a nation sailing Destroyers into our waters in the Atlantic and Pacific with transcontinental missiles strong enough to hit our biggest mainland installations and reduce them to ash WITHOUT us detecting their approach to drop us to the troop strength that a draft or straight out conscription would be needed. A country would be better off hitting us with a nuke before trying that.

Long story short, you don't gotta worry about getting drafted anytime soon, kid.

The U.S. just got out of a 20-year war in Iraq & Afghanistan that produced little results for the amount of death and money it cost the country. There’s a lot of money to be made by the military-industrial complex without risking USAmerican lives and, as long as those arms sales profits keep rolling in, there’s no threat of a draft.

This is one reason why i have made a petition to call on congress and the senate to either abolish the selective service system or to expand it to require everyone to register.The current selective service system is unconstitutional as it applies based on gender which is a violation of the constitution as it violates the 14th amendment of the constitution and the equal protections clause.I would appreciate if people in this comment section can look into and sign my petition.

Honestly, they'll recruit from the prisons before they bring back the draft.

They did that during the Iraq war.

Giving felons the choice, your full sentence in prison or one enlistment overseas.

I see the comments and while i get where everyone saying no is coming from, at the same time i just feel like we can't ignore the fact that Putin literally implied a nuclear attack if West interferes in Ukraine. And there are plenty of news articles explaining why it's not just an empty threat.

The reason another draft would be hard to do now is because of Vietnam. However, the percentage is never 0.

We would likely never have a draft short of desperation; i.e. a credible invasion threat to the US itself. That's because after Vietnam we transitioned to a professional, volunteer-only army, and we have more than enough troops for anything short of WWIII. Conscripts are not much more than cannon fodder at best, and that's not how war works anymore.

Draft is always a possibility. In fact men currently living in countries where the draft was banned already still have to prepare for the possibility because during wartime every government has the right to overrule anything. Inter arma enim silent leges.

There is always a possibility if we are need but you should be more than willing to help out as you get to enjoy the freedoms that many other people and other countries don’t even have. I’m in my mid 30’s and when 9/11 happened I couldn’t wait to sign up and fuck shit up when I turned 18, granted I came from a military family. The draft is always on the table my guy but if you’re that worried you can always move to another country and denounce your citizenship. The great thing about this country is that we have choices but remember all choices come with consequences

Well when the U.S. gets into a war with Russia it will probably about after Biden is voted out so if your 18 like me, it will most likely be in our 20's that we will get drafted into the war. The future is uncertain and always will be. There's nothing we can do about it right now, but hopefully the U.S. won't go into a war. There's a line from a song that I constantly get reminded of when there's a news report about the war. It's from Civil War by Guns N Roses. If we didn’t draft people to invade Iraq in ‘91 and again in ‘03, I don’t think we’ll draft people for any potential intervention or spillover from Ukraine if NATO is involved.

Won't happen, we have more then enough troops already and modern warfare doesn't really utilize mass amounts of ground troops anymore to throw at enemy defenses like in WW2. Also I doubt many men of draft age are as eager to go and die as they seemed to be during the last 2 drafts so public sentiment would be highly against it and most would probably just dodge anyway.
