[–]youreallmeatanyway 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
You're missing the entire forest for but one tree.
The "supporting families" part is just for sympathy points. It is a hedge against the knee-jerk "men are bad because..." response something like this might garner.
Jesus, dude, not everything has to be 100% applicable to you to be a valid statement.
[+]squarefilms points 9 years ago* [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link
But things do have to be correct to be valid. So it should be "much of what you see was built by men, most of whom were supporting their families."

You don't seem to understand how "general truths" work. Let me demonstrate:
"Humans have two legs".
The is a "general truth". It is applicable in the majority of cases. But if we operated on what you're suggesting then the above general truth is "invalid" because there are some humans with one leg and even some with three or even four.
Seriously, man, it's not all about you.
[+]squarefilms points 9 years ago* [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

I don't understand why mentioning family is necessary or good. A lot of families are dysfunctional/abusive as fuck. We shouldn't be putting families on a pedestal as though they all are special, good, and always worth supporting. I am proud to say I have no interest in "starting a family".

I mean, you must not be in a trade if you don't understand what he's saying. Engineers don't build shit, and depending on what type of engineering her job might be piss easy especially when compared with putting the plans into action.
[–]auditthencaa 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I mean, you must not have any education if you don't understand that without someone capable of engineering and design, construction workers would have nothing to build.
[–]throwaway5612407 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm an electrical engineer on top of my other job bruh. I'm telling you what I know to be true, nothing more nothing less.
[–]nennerb15 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
You obviously don't understand what it takes to be an engineer then either. Designing and building are two halves to a whole. Poor design can get people killed. Poor implementation of a design can do the same. It's easy to sit a criticize because you don't understand the importance of a job.
I am not saying that construction workers have it easy, but every step of the building process is important and has its own challenges.
[–]throwaway5612407 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Read my reply to the other dude. I work on the engineering side to, but its nothing compared to putting it into action. You won't lose your finger or fall off a 30 ft ladder (or worse) writing up plans.
[–]auditthencaa1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
So you're assigning a greater worth to physical exertion and danger than you are to brainpower? The market disagrees with you.
[–]throwaway56124071 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Listen man, you don't have to get uppity. I'm not making fun of your job. I'm saying that, while working on both sides, this is the conclusion I've reached. Mapping a job is way easier then putting it together.
By the by though, about the market bit. They only need one team of engineers whereas you need many more hands on the workforce. The engineering crews pay just gets split into less. Hell when considering the overall pay share, the workforce probably gets more then the engineer squad.
I'm not making fun of yours, either. It's not personal. I understand the point of this subreddit, but downplaying the role that the brains of a given operation play is just a bad look for men and women both. I get where you're coming from now.
Right, and its not like I care personally. I just agree with the guys sentiment that engineers don't build. Its a difference between white and blue collar jobs. Nothing wrong with it really, but it is what it is.
[–]nennerb151 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Does danger make a job more important?
Does physical difficulty make a job harder than mental difficulty?
In your mind, somehow, maybe it is. But you can't discount an entire industry because you don't think that they are working hard enough since they might not lose a finger on the job. You can't say that women don't contribute anything at all because they are less likely to get hurt in their occupation.
I'd say so, otherwise anyone would do it. It takes a special kind of crazy to do that shit at a reasonable cost. (Which only has to be reasonable because they have to hire a shitload of workers.)
Same as above.
I'm not discounting them man. I'm saying, having been on both sides of this coin, mapping a job is way easier then putting it into action. Geez, engineers have to be the touchiest bastards when it comes to this conversation.
Engineers don't build anything. It is not a craftsman profession, it is a white collar profession and there is nothing wrong with that.
[–]bufedad -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Engineers design shit. They don't build it. Construction workers build shit.
Cool, so you're arguing that the brains behind the operation, male or female, don't matter?
[–]bufedad 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Didn't argue that either. I simply argued that engineers don't build things.
When talking about who built things, that doesn't include engineers.

It is well known that construction workers are almost exclusively male.

It's hard for me to know. But based on what I know about women in construction, it's practically impossible for everything around me to only have been built by men. It's hard for me to know. But based on what I know about women in construction, it's practically impossible for everything around me to only have been built by men.
No one said only by men.

No, I am only using that word because implications seem to go over your head.
If it ISN'T implying that only men built it, then the sign is completely useless and saying "men and women, single or otherwise, built every thing you see." Do you think this is what it is implying?
No, you are using the word because it's the only way your point makes sense.
Answer my question. What meninist point is the sign making?
meninist? You know that meninist is just a movement making fun of feminists right? Right?
If it ISN'T implying that only men built it, then the sign is completely useless and saying "men and women, single or otherwise, built every thing you see."
Actually, no. women helped build very very few of the buildings that you see. Almost the entirety of construction work is performed by men.
Why are you adding the word "almost"?
[–]WASDnSwiftar0 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If you don't possess the analytic skills to see how it's wrong, I can't help you, and you're no better off than extreme feminists.
[–]bufedad2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Translation: I can't explain why it's wrong... so I'll just declare that I'm right and end the conversation.
Eh, you want to get into this? Alright.
As many people have already tried pointing out to you, men aren't the only ones who were building it. So the statement "Everything you see was built by men supporting their families" is false by either omission or misrepresentation of facts. The sign itself does not give credit to women who were there, or men who were not supporting families. So not only is it wrong to just claim it was Men, but they are wrong to claim it was men supporting their families. For all we know, some worker got off the job and blew it all on hookers and cocaine.
Even more so, it's a fucking sign some imbecile printed and slapped on a post in a city. There's no affiliation with any construction company on the paper.
As many people have already tried pointing out to you, men aren't the only ones who were building it.
And as I've told many people, no one said they were the only ones building it.
So the statement "Everything you see was built by men supporting their families" is false by either omission or misrepresentation of facts
Neither.
Historically (and true today) over 98% of construction work was done by men.
It's like saying men fought WWII. Were there some women who fought? Absolutely, but they were so rare as to be an oddity, not the rule. The overwhelming number of soldiers in WWII, and the overwhelming number of construction workers historically and today are/were men.
The sign itself does not give credit to women who were there, or men who were not supporting families. So not only is it wrong to just claim it was Men,
You know... 99.9% of them were men... but it's wrong to claim men built this? That seems a bit disingenuous.
but they are wrong to claim it was men supporting their families.
On this we'll agree.
Not sure what this has to do with anything.
[–]WASDnSwiftar1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's inferred. "Everything you see here was built by men. #MenAreAwesome." Why are men awesome? Because they built something? But why are we singling out men if we acknowledge that women were there, too?
Most reference I see nowdays to those who fought in WW2 mention "Men and Women." What also needs to be taken into account is the times difference. The roles of men and women during that age were far more rigid.
99.9%? Seems your numbers are a little off according to this:
In 2014, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 9,813,000 people working in the construction industry. Of these, 872,000 of them, or 8.9 percent, were women
Source: https://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat14.pdf
It's inferred.
Oh... you inferred something from the statement, and then decided to argue that? Well, that's what we call a strawman.
Yes, I'll admit to be hyperbolic there.
Although, these numbers include office jobs. Something else to keep in mind.
Not strawman at all. I hate strawman arguments with a passion, but looking at something that says "Men built this, aren't we awesome?" definitely glosses over the fact that women helped.
Not strawman at all. I hate strawman arguments with a passion
Of course you do. That's why you are building this strawman over and over again.
I don't think you understand what a strawman argument is. The sign gives a definitive impression that others in this entire thread have also brought concern up over. I am arguing that the sign could have either: 1) Phrased it differently to be less one-sided in an area that it doesn't need to be, or 2) Pick something else that is far more suitable for what they're portraying.
I don't think you understand what a strawman argument is.
An argument that wasn't made, but you invented because it's easier to argue against? That's not what a strawman is?
That's exactly what a strawman is, but that's not what is happening here. We're discussing the possible interpretations of a poorly designed sign.
You're discussing what you want it to say, rather than what it says.
Saying that cars drive on every road you see doesn't infer or imply that only cars (to the exclusion of trucks, SUV's, semis, RV's, etc...) drive on the road.
Right. I'm on a Men's Rights subreddit where a majority of people are saying the same thing as I am, but I'm the wrong one.
Ah... can't argue the point, so you resort to everyone believes the world is flat, just like me, so you're wrong, the world is flat.
I've actually fully fleshed out my argument, but all you've done is cry strawman. If you don't want to listen to me, by all means look at all of the other posts in this same thread that are stating the exact same thing.
Looking at your post history, you vehemently argue in favor of Men no matter the issue, and very obviously have a chip on your shoulder regarding women. You are essentially the SRS of Mens Rights. I'll treat you the same way I treat them, by not responding and not giving the attention they crave.
Go on and tell me I have no argument or that I'm "fleeing" or what-have-you, and we can go our separate ways.
I've actually fully fleshed out my argument, but all you've done is cry strawman.
Yes, you've fully fleshed out your argument against a point nobody made.
Wonderfully good for you.

You may notice that while architects design buildings, they don't actually build them.
[–]auditthencaa 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Let me guess, you also think that a college degree is a waste.
You want to be taken seriously? Drop the Neanderthal shtick.
Well, you can guess. You'd guess wrong, since I work in a field that requires a college degree... (hence have one).
Want to be taken seriously? Respond to what's said, instead of what you think people mean.

Because some things are actually put in place by women and a lot more by men who are not supporting families.

Look at the jobs near the end of this list:

I'm seeing e.g. 22% of Architects are female - do we just not care about them? Deliberately ignoring them to make a point? Hell, even the 3% of "Construction trades" workers who are female don't deserve to be discounted like this.
[–]MagicTampon 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
In other words, fewer than 1/4 of people who draw pictures of buildings, without actually building them, are female.
Hell, even the 3% of "Construction trades" workers who are femal
A disproportionate number of women in construction end up in management, because they are not forced to waste their early careers lifting heavy objects and doing other risky things in order to keep their jobs, as men are mandated to do in that field.

Where's your evidence for this? Or are you just going to keep making a bullshit assertion and hope we go away?
[–]dolandoes 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link
this is foolish.
[–]Lethn -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
While I think it's not right to do a generalisation like the OP has done and there are always exceptions the idea that you think you can just make a statement like that and then walk away as if it's fact with nothing to back it up with just makes you look like an arrogant twat.
Got anything else to add? Or are you just going to keep shitposting? Because if it comes to that I'll always win.
[–]lewliloo 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link
You shouldn't use the figure "100%" if you know the figure isn't 100%, it just undermines your point. Even "all" would be a little better because at least it's not as mathematically specific - but it's still not true, so it still undermines the point. "Most" would make a stronger point. "People" instead of "men" would make the strongest point.
As for proof, if you've never seen a woman at a construction site, then I'm not sure where you live - maybe not a major city? Further proof can be found in the dataisbeautiful post cited above. 22% of architects are women.
[–]Lethn 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I've never fucking said that I agree with that and you and a bunch of other users are trying to jump down my throat. Fuck off, I was also criticising the other guy who said the exact same thing in reverse as a retort, you're being pathetic.
[–]lewliloo 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You asked for evidence so I provided it. I didn't jump down your throat. I don't care who you agree with in other posts. If you're feeling attacked, it's not me that's doing it. You may want to take a break from the thread.
[–]LarryBeard 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Architects do not build. They do not even know half the regulations they need to enforce (In France at least).
Stop using this argument, it won't work with people actually working in the field.
[–]lewliloo 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What does it require in your opinion to be counted? Does the person directing traffic with the "slow" sign count? What about the foreman? They aren't actually touching any building materials.
"Working in the field" huh? Sounds like maybe you don't value work you can't physically see. Do the engineers that design the i-beams or the chemists who figure out the proportions of the cement count? What about the person who works for purchasing and buys the machinery that's used on the build site. What about the sales rep that works with the purchasing department to make sure all the equipment is on the job site? How about the person who maintains the supplier's database of inventory? How about the company that makes the drill bits you're going to use on the site? What about the Chinese assembly line worker who makes the blanks that, say, Kennametal cuts into the drill bits that you'll use on the site?
These aren't rhetorical, I'm genuinely interested in where you draw the line.
[–]LarryBeard 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
"Working in the field" huh? Sounds like maybe you don't value work you can't physically see.
Might be because I didn't use the correct word. By "working in the field" I didn't mean only the one who work on site but people working in the construction business.
Sounds like maybe you don't value work you can't physically see.
I do value work I can't physically see, it is my work (Began as a drafter then engineering)
As for where I stand, I was refering to the Architects argument you were throwing around.
Simple, I don't draw any line. The flyer is about men that build buildings, half of the answer trying to disprove that at the time of my post were people talking about architects. I know for a fact that architects don't build. Heck, I don't have the pretension to say I built something if I designed it and I do more than Architects.
We've got a badass over here!
[–]cjsound 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I see a lot of comments arguing about the family portion of this, but it's kinda strange to glaze over the generalization... Women build things too. I get this is about men's rights, but I think going the path of leaning to one gender or another is just going to make more conflict, not more equality.
[–]Mykeru -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Where did you get the idea it's ever been about equality?
[–]nennerb15 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You should go hang out in Tumblr. They have a large group of people who are all about gender dominance in society and like to make broad overarching statements not based on fact in order to raise thier own gender and knock the other gender down.
You would fit in in sure.
[–]Mykeru 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As there are now more genders than there are Pez collectables, I will assume "knocking other genders down" is basically a round robin elimination.
[–]MagicTampon 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
This is great and mostly true.
However, one need not invoke the cause of others in order to see the value in men and in the things men do ("supporting their families"). This is much like the crap argument in saying that if men don't go to university, women suffer. Men and the things they do are inherently valuable. One need not invoke females or "families."
[–]bocanuts 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's a good point but it's a bit nuanced to win over the general public.
[–]MagicTampon 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, but keep repeating it, and it will eventually creep into their thick skulls.
[–]azazelcrowley 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It reminded me of the "I have a boyfriend" excuse tbh. Shits fucked that we have to cling to imaginary families to get people to respect us. Different contexts, but yeh.

This does not apply to 110% of the population, including friends of friends, hermits squatting in abandoned salt mines, hypotheticals and lame counter-examples I just extracted from my ass. Therefore, it is invalid. However, pointing that out, however tenuous, does mean that I'm the smartest fucktard in the room.
