The shirt-gate just absolutely shocked me.

I consider myself a socialist and I've been voting far left for nearly 20 years. But jesus christ, the whole thing has left me wondering that all this time I may have been possibly digging my own grave.

One of the biggest scientific achievements of last 20 years happens, and the lead scientists gets publically slaughtered, his career very nearly gets ruined forever, all because of a t-shirt.

If at least the shirt said "Make me a sandwich cunt" , that I could understand. But this? There's literally nothing wrong with it. I shown it to some of my female friends and none of them had a fucking clue what's even supposed to be a problem.

And the biggest highlight is he supposedly had tweets from the teachers saying they will not show the video of comet landing in classroom because of the t-shirt. If this is the kind of peopel that are educating the youth, things are gonna get a lot worse. Far fucking worse.

I absolutely support equal rights and I do agree things for women aren't perfect nowadays. But for fucks sake, I'm not going to support your movement if there's even 1% of possibility that some time in the future I'm going to get fired because of bad fashion sense. Its just self-preservation at this point.

I think this whole entire occurrence further showed the world what a bunch of whiny assholes the Twitter, Tumblr, and Blogsphere feminists are. They're not for equality, they're for pointing out hurt feelings or things that can possibly maybe cause someone to have hurt feelings. That's not equality, that's assholishness and the only - THE ONLY - way this is going to change is to hold them to the same standards. Look, I'm not saying this isn't a big deal - it drives me up a wall. But we've established multiple times already that there is a great deal of hypocrisy regarding the guy's shirt. Should we be that surprised when we find more hypocrisy?

I feel like this is what most of the subreddit is; just circlejerk sessions regarding things we already know exists. Shouldn't we be more focussed on how we can resolve the issues involving men's rights (or lack-there-of)?

What drives me nuts about this whole issue is the fact that if a man were to tell a woman to not dress as the women depicted on Dr. Taylor's shirt then it would be "slut-shaming" and you'd be a "rape apologist." I'm open to discussion on this, here's my opinion: I think the big reason there was an uproar is because of the position he was in. She's at the beach doing whatever wearing an extremely childish, offensive shirt while he's leading important research, being kind of a 'face' of modern space science while wearing a mildly offensive shirt (to very few people, at that). I don't agree with the argument that there is a bunch of sexism keeping women out of STEM, but this is what they're using to further that argument specifically. Now, with that said, I don't think anyone would cause a fuss if the positions were reversed and a female scientist wore a shirt with a bunch of shirtless guys on it, so his position is only a part of the reason it caused an uproar. I don't hear men ever complaining about Calvin Klein models or anything like that.

Gonna get me down votes, but, I think the context of the two shirts are very different in light of who these two people are and how they were worn. 1. Jessica Valenti is simply a jerk. Appart from Feminists and MRA who follow the man/woman war nobody else knows who she is. However, Dr. Taylor is a well respected scientist who chose to where a silly shirt on television at the height of his career. As a woman, I am not actually offended by his shirt. I just think it was stupid. Why would one wear this on tv? It's like being ask to give a speech and throwing a joke about race in there. Its just soo stupid. Why would anyone with a brain do it.

Her shirt is obviously vastly worse in content, but his was worn in professional context as opposed to recreational context. I don't want a world where I can be fired for what I wear in my free time, but I do believe that there are boundaries to professional attire. Were I this guy's boss, I would have privately told him to change before the interview to something more conservative. I think that the reaction was overblown, but that it was a poor professional choice. Valenti's shirt indicates poor character and lack of human compassion, but I'd not support her being professionally liable for her vacation photos.

The "male tears" one could be taken as satirizing the image of her as a man-hating radfem, similar to how the "blank space" video satirizes Taylor Swift's image as a crazy chick. I don't know anything about the wearer, so can't judge how likely the intent was humor.
